Bookshop of Yesterdays | Amy Meyerson
Miranda Brooks grew up in the stacks of her eccentric uncle Billy's bookstore, solving the scavenger hunts he created just for her. But on her twelfth birthday, Billy has a falling-out with her mother and disappears from Miranda's life. Sixteen years later, she receives unexpected news: Billy has died and left her Prospero Books, which is teetering on bankruptcy, and one final scavenger hunt. Returning to the bookstore as its owner, Miranda is drawn into a journey through Billy's past -- and the terrible secret that tore her family apart.

The story was ok. It wasn‘t an amazing book for me. Maybe because as an avid reader I‘m not a reader of classics. They were such a big part of this book and I feel like I missed out because of that. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I enjoyed, for the most part, this story about a women learning, at long last, what led to the break between her mom & favorite uncle. When her uncle dies, Miranda goes home for the funeral & learns her uncle left her his bookstore & clues to the truth of what really happened years ago. The plot is good, albeit predictable, characters okay but I think the writing, let‘s both down. Good but not great. Still, a low pick in the end.

Family drama mystery. I guessed early on what the big mystery was, but I cried anyway, lol. I usually read fantasy romance so this was a nice palate cleanser in between those books. ⭐️⭐️⭐️½

Miranda adored her Uncle Billy as a kid, but after his estrangement from her mother, she hasn‘t seen him for years. Then she learns he has died and left her his bookstore along with a scavenger hunt to learn about his past. This is not a perfect book and it even irritated me in places, but I found it compelling and didn‘t want to put it down.

I enjoyed the originality of the plot and the gripping story about literature and family secrets buried in the past. Although not always happy with the main character, I really did enjoy the story that gives the reader some pleasant, entertaining reading hours.

For such a mid-length novel, this one seems to go on and on…

I really liked the bookshop stuff and the literary references. I was slightly annoyed by the predictable, unrealistic storyline and the clunky writing style. I could not stand the selfish, shallow main character. I stuck with it, but didn‘t love it.

I enjoyed the scavenger hunt that Miranda goes on, not to mention the many books mentioned throughout. I did guess the twist well before Miranda figured it out and Jay is such a frat guy who is totally wrong for her. He had no contribution so between him and figuring out the surprise, it didn‘t make it quite to a 5 star read for me. That said, it was still good and pulls at your heartstrings so it was worthy of a solid 4 stars.

Miranda misses her uncle Billy, her mom has a fight with her brother, the mystery of his disappearance begins. liked all the characters except the main one, Miranda;one of those characters who never seems happy. I almost DNF but the last third is where the story seems to hold the most interest and answers finally what everyone‘s secret is. What really bothered me? Who were the Dodgers playing when Malcom took her to a baseball game!😜

I devoured this book! While I figured out the big reveal close to the beginning of the book, I love the way the author got to the end. She still had me guessing on whether I was right. The story is about a woman who hasn‘t seen her uncle in years, but when he dies, he leaves her his bookshop and a scavenger hunt. Can‘t wait to discuss at book club. 576 points for #merryreaders for #wintergames. #crushtherush #readyourway

A mystery set in a bookshop that has a coffee shop within it... I was all in! This book grabbed me right at the beginning but the pace soon slowed. I could see the promise of this book so I pushed through the slow part & I'm so glad I did, I loved the ending of this book so much! When Miranda inherits her estranged & eccentric uncle's book shop after his death the mystery begins with a scavenger hunt series of clues. #6 of #15books15weeks Cont....

TheHeartlandBookFairy With a bit of family drama Miranda must decide if she wants to continue following the clues to solve the mystery and learn the truth or, give up the search and go back to her life as she knew it. With the final clue in her hand while sitting Oceanside, Miranda must make a choice that could change the rest of her life. Family drama, mystery, a bit of drama, and forgiveness and redemption. Definitely worth sticking with this one to the end! 4y

This was definitely a pick for me. It was our book club‘s read for this month and I really loved it. It‘s about a young woman who goes across the country in a scavenger hunt of sorts left by her estranged uncle who passed away. This is just full of literary references and twists and a bit of romance and drama. I loved everything about this book!

This isn't something I normally would read, but I read it because the author is local and is doing a virtual author talk at the local library. I ended up liking it, not loving it but it was cute. And then I totally forgot to show up to the virtual talk, lol.

Princess-Kingofkings That is my problem with virtual appointments. I don't look forward to them as much as in person activities. I get distracted by what's going on and don't remember to log in. 5y
crazyspine @Princess-Kingofkings I've actually been liking it more for book club type things at the library or with people that I don't really know that well because I'm really shy, but I do like to hear what other people say. But yeah for an author talk, I would have rather been in person. 5y
Princess-Kingofkings @crazyspine oooh, I do agree ~ it is a much better option when you don't know others well. I'm outgoing but feel awkward when I try to get to know someone and it doesn't go well. 5y

An enjoyable audiobook. Miranda, a middle school history teacher, inherits her Uncle Billy‘s bookstore. Somewhat predictable plot, but the literary scavenger hunt and family drama kept me interested.

There were some things I liked about this one, and a few things I didn‘t. Liked the bookshop setting and family history scavenger hunt. Not super impressed by the main character, the pacing and editing of the story, and the reveals. Overall and enjoyable and engaging read, but just a reasonably good book.

It does make me want to read The Tempest, though!

I just started this one, and I am loving it so far; but I think I may have figured out the mystery in chapter one? Maybe not? Mid 90s culture and literary allusions are ❤ in chapters 1 and 2. It's enough to keep me interested. 🤓 I love a good bookstore novel coupled with 8.5 inches of the fluffy stuff ❄! #snowday #readingandcocoa #theweatheroutsideisfrightful

I neither hated nor loved this slice of life novel. If you enjoy reading about other people who love books, family secrets, and scavenger hunts, this should be worth a read. I occasionally felt that the writing was very “writerly“, so a bit clumsy. #sliceoflife #booklove #familysecret
