Two hearts. Twice as vulnerable. Manhattan, 1850. Born out of wedlock to a wealthy socialite and a nameless immigrant, Cora Lee can mingle with the rich just as easily as she can slip unnoticed into the slums and graveyards of the city. As the only female resurrectionist in New York, she's carved out a niche procuring bodies afflicted with the strangest of anomalies. Anatomists will pay exorbitant sums for such specimens--dissecting and displaying them for the eager public. Cora's specialty is not only profitable, it's a means to keep a finger on the pulse of those searching for her. She's the girl born with two hearts--a legend among grave robbers and anatomists--sought after as an endangered prize. Now, as a series of murders unfolds closer and closer to Cora, she can no longer trust those she holds dear, including the young medical student she's fallen for. Because someone has no intention of waiting for Cora to die a natural death.

I really enjoyed this story it has mystery, suspense, romance, drama. Manhattan 1850. Cora Lee is a resurrectionists which means she sells for high price, bodies with strange anomalies to anatomists who will exhibit the bodies to the public. But too many people is dying, do they die for natural causes? And now, Cora also has a price since she is the impossible girl with two hearts.

It was good. It took me 6 years to read this story. 🔽

Gissy I thought it was going to be a fantasy book but it is a HF mystery. 3.8/4 ⭐️
I liked it. Fast pace. The gifts were okay but since the face mask is so old I have to discard it or I will become as the mask is called...dead(by a mask)🤣

3.5 Stars • The Impossible Girl by Lydia Kang is a historical fiction set in 1850s Manhattan, where a young woman named Cora Lee, born with two hearts, navigates the dangerous world of grave robbing while hiding her own medical anomaly. I liked the little changes in the narrator. I kept changing who I thought was the bad guy. It‘s a well written book just not the right time for me.

Ticked another one off my Kindle TBR last night!
Cora the girl with 2 💕 works as a resurrectionist procuring bodies for medical professionals and exhibitionists. It‘s the best way to make sure her own biological secret isn‘t discovered and she won‘t end up in her own clients‘ collections.
On the fence with this one. Was a bit of a slog, then a whiplash denouement and IMO weak finale. Very PG, period mystery if that‘s your bag. 3.5 🌟

Took me a while to read because I just haven‘t been in much of a “reading mood” lately, (strange, I know), but this book was exquisite. I have truly become a big Lydia Kang fan and will definitely be reading her other work.

monalyisha SAME. I watched two seasons of Fleabag in two days, though...so I haven‘t been without accomplishment. 😅 4y
Jess_Franzino @monalyisha Glad I‘m not alone! I‘ve gotten a fair amount of writing done this month, but have literally read only 12 books since 2021 started. YIKES! I‘ve also been binging....everything 🙄 4y

I really love everything I have read by Lydia Kang. This one was so hard to put down! It is slightly morbid but Cora Lee is kind of bad ass. There were a few twists I saw coming but also a few that were unexpected. Great story!

I liked this one quite a bit less than Opium and Absinthe (which I LOVED) but after the slow start it was still really good. I was disappointed by the ending; not that it was poorly executed, but I found the final twist to be quite disheartening. I really enjoy the historical medical details Kang includes in her stories though, and I loved this intelligent, ass-kicking lady protagonist. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 (rounded up to 4 on GR)

This book definitely had the dark themes I enjoy while also being a great work of historical fiction. I found the basis of Cora's story to be a little far-fetched. The tiny bit of romance that appeared in this book was totally palatable for me as someone who hates romance, too. I'd recommend this as a fall or winter book for my friends! It is wonderfully dark and I would love to curl up with it on a cold or rainy day.

This is the story of a “resurrectionist” (fancy name for grave robber) in the mid-1800‘s. She robs corpses from graves for medical school dissections and exhibitions in the spirit of “Barnum‘s American Museum” & “The Mütter Museum”. Meanwhile, she is the most sought after specimen around. What I liked about the book, besides being morbidly fascinating, is that there are so many twists and turns that you do not see coming.

Someone at this cafe asked me what this book was about. So I told him it was about a young female grave robber in the 1850s who had two hearts and long story short he thought I was weird and left. Too bad. If he stayed, I would have told him about how it‘s ALSO a murder mystery. His loss. It meant I got to stay and finish reading my chapter! ❤️📖☕️

This novel offers a great historical insight into the resurrectionists, the medical practice of the 1800s, and the move to have museums for "oddities" in NYC. Cora, the protagonist, is tough, intelligent, and resourceful; she overcomes her medical challenges and the prejudices of her time to carve out her path in the world of grave robbers who seek bodies to increase medical knowledge. This was a great audiobook (I listened via #kindleunlimited).

Loved this slightly dark & macabre, but fun & engaging historical mystery, set in mid 19-century NYC. Kang has created an unusual MC in Cora Lee, a resurrectionist (grave digger), hiding the secret that she is the 'impossible girl'-born with 2 ❤️❤️Excellent mix of history, medical & mystery.💜

Only one piece of #bookmail this week--an #ARC for a book tour review in September. I love the cover design and the premise--a female resurrectionist who procures bodies in 1850 Manhattan...and oh yeah... she also has two hearts. ??

I love good historical mysteries full of suspense and I really enjoyed the author's "A Beautiful Poison" last year.
