Magonia | Maria Dahvana Headley
Maria Dahvana Headley's soaring YA debut is a fiercely intelligent, multilayered fantasy where Neil Gaiman's Stardust meets John Green's The Fault in Our Stars in a story about a girl caught between two worlds . . . two races . . . and two destinies. Aza Ray Boyle is drowning in thin air. Since she was a baby, Aza has suffered from a mysterious lung disease that makes it ever harder for her to breathe, to speakto live. So when Aza catches a glimpse of a ship in the sky, her family chalks it up to a cruel side effect of her medication. But Aza doesn't think this is a hallucination. She can hear someone on the ship calling her name.Only her best friend, Jason, listens. Jason, who's always been there. Jason, for whom she might have more-than-friendly feelings. But before Aza can consider that thrilling idea, something goes terribly wrong. Aza is lost to our worldand found, by another. Magonia. Above the clouds, in a land of trading ships, Aza is not the weak and dying thing she was. In Magonia, she can breathe for the first time. Better, she has immense powerbut as she navigates her new life, she discovers that war between Magonia and Earth is coming. In Aza's hands lies fate of the whole of humanityincluding the boy who loves her. Where do her loyalties lie?

I hardly ever give up on a book. I‘m one of those people who doggedly persists because I think every book has some good elements. Not this one. So poorly written. It‘s trying to be a teenage voice but it just doesn‘t work. I can‘t understand why there‘s a Neil Gaiman recommendation on the front cover. Did he even read it?? And there is even a sequel! Why?? Not for me. Can‘t recommend this one.

Write a brief summary of the novel: Aza Ray was never a normal baby. Aza was born with a unnormal, mysterious lung disease. This disease causes Aza having a hard time to breath, hard time speaking, having mostly a hard time to live. One day she see something particular, unspeakable sight.

Liked the start, the rest was rather ok.
Did not like the almost love-triangle, but it was resolved in a good manner.

Aza Ray Boyle, nearly 16, is sentenced to death by a breathing disorder medical science calls Azaray syndrome. Somehow she keeps surviving: hating the hospital, loving her batty family. When the worst happens, Aza's shocked at how unprepared she really is. She's even less prepared to wake up on an airship, surrounded by blue-skinned sailors who call her Aza Ray Quel. Aza, it seems, is the lost savior of the sky people of Magonia, stolen away.

Well this was....different and original. The writing is beautiful. Character development and pacing were on point. It was a slow start; took anout 100 pages for the action. At one point it felt silly (and more of a so-so) but it quickly corrected and grabbed my attention again. I have #2 on hold at my library. I want to see where it goes. #youngadult

Review up on blog for this one if you want to check what I thought in more detail 😊
Magonia was imaginative, with a new world up in the sky with boats floating in the air, storm whales and bats that sail ships. It has shape shifting birds and birds that fly in and out of a door in your chest.
I loved the friendships and the pure imagination in this one. 3 Stars and I would continue the series. #jades2018reads #bindrosbookshelf

This book was very weird. I liked the characters. I liked that it dealt with the main characters illness in a very real way. That said overall the story was just weird. If you have read it you'll know what I mean. Talking birds and ships floating in the sky. All very strange.

Found these beautiful books at the thrift store today for $2 !! I didn't buy any of them yet, because I haven't heard of ANY of them before, so I thought I'd check in with Litsy first to see what you guys say. I love these gorgeous covers though😍 SO BEAUTIFUL!

Re-starting Magonia and I'm reminded why I don't like first-person narratives: It's a goddamn novel, stop TELLING me things and get on with it. This whole first chapter is her explaining how she "lives" in hospitals. The author couldn't just start with a scene in a hospital?

Texreader Yea first person bugs the cr$& out of me too. 7y

For the first time in a long time, I picked up a book and I struggled to put it back down. The fantastical world of Magonia captured me, and Headley's writing is superb. This is one of my favourite fantasy novels I've read in quite some time and it's nice to see a ya fantasy steer clear of the ever popular dystopian theme. 4/5

A book to read and a messy poutine dinner. Eighteen years I've been living in Ontario and I still have yet to find a place that makes good poutine.

CouronneDhiver Smoke's! Have you tried it? 7y

I almost put it down in the beginning, because Aza's ramblings were mildly annoying. But once the story really unfolds, it's wonderful. A unique take on the "main characters seems weak but really has amazing powers" theme and great, creative worldbuilding ?? #trainreads

The writing is what got me. I absolutely loved the main character. Even though she was a teenage girl, she felt real dealing with all of the emotions of going to die eventually. The story line is what makes this into a young adult fantasy. I wouldn't let that get in the way if you're looking for a quick adventure with a witty teenage girl, who's going to die.
