Fool LP
Fool LP: A Novel | Christopher Moore
A man of infinite jest, Pocket has been Lear's cherished fool for years, from the time the king's grown daughtersselfish, scheming Goneril, sadistic (but erotic-fantasy-grade-hot) Regan, and sweet, loyal Cordeliawere mere girls. So naturally Pocket is at his brainless, elderly liege's side when Learat the insidious urging of Edmund, the bastard (in every way imaginable) son of the Earl of Gloucesterdemands that his kids swear their undying love and devotion before a collection of assembled guests. Of course Goneril and Regan are only too happy to brownnose Dad. But Cordelia believes that her father's request is kind of . . . well . . . stupid, and her blunt honesty ends up costing her her rightful share of the kingdom and earns her a banishment to boot. Well, now the bangers and mash have really hit the fan. The whole damn country's about to go to hell in a handbasket because of a stubborn old fart's wounded pride. And the only person who can possibly make things right . . . is Pocket, a small and slight clown with a biting sense of humor. He's already managed to sidestep catastrophe (and the vengeful blades of many an offended nobleman) on numerous occasions, using his razor-sharp mind, rapier wit . . . and the equally well-honed daggers he keeps conveniently hidden behind his back. Now he's going to have to do some very fancy maneuveringcast some spells, incite a few assassinations, start a war or two (the usual stuff)to get Cordelia back into Daddy Lear's good graces, to derail the fiendish power plays of Cordelia's twisted sisters, to rescue his gigantic, gigantically dim, and always randy friend and apprentice fool, Drool, from repeated beatings . . . and to shag every lusciously shaggable wench who's amenable to shagging along the way. Pocket may be a fool . . . but he's definitely not an idiot.

1. My officemates and I play all kinds of practical jokes on each other. We have saran wrapped desks, changed languages and screen orientation on computers, and we have rubber band and nerf gun wars. One person even did the stapler in the jello from The Office.
2. Pocket from Fool by Christopher Moore immediately came to mind when I saw this prompt. What a great character and book.

4.8⭐️ for this hilarious retelling of King Lear, that‘s full of murder, espionage, witches, and heinous f@$&ery. No, there is no spice in this book; however, there is a lot of people being shagged, including a ghost. I‘ve never had so much fun with retelling, but I would expect nothing from less from Christopher Moore. #DoubleBookSpin for #BookSpinBingo.

🎧 New favorite Moore book.

Naughtiness level? Through the roof. Beware the bawdiness!!

I laughed a lot!

I wouldn‘t pick this as my first Moore … but if you‘re familiar with his writing … have you read Lamb & are you looking for more … then this could be the hilarious book for you! British humor?!

I didn't dig this at first; lots of crude humor and silly sexual encounters in the beginning. While I laughed plenty, I wasn't sure where the story was going and I wasn't overly engaged. However, once the intrigue started and the fool took a more active role in the events, it got quite good, but I felt this didn't have the best balance of humor and story, it was more one or the other at any given time.

JamieArc I‘ve you read other of Moore‘s books? I‘ve only read Sacré Bleu, which I liked, but your description sounds familiar and I wonder if it echoes in all his books. 2y
TieDyeDude @JamieArc I've read The Stupidest Angel and Lamb, both of which I thought were hilarious. Maybe he's one of those hit-or-miss authors? 2y

Listened to this largely while running and it gave me quite a few good chuckles and smiles! I liked Shakespeare for Squirrels more but perhaps that's because I love a Midsommers night dream. Tbh I haven't read King Lear, so maybe that would have impacted the listening but in truth Moore's work stands alone as just fucking good fun.

Two books I finished this past week. The Memory Police is an ethereal book originally written in Japanese. It features an island where things slowly disappear- birds, hats, music, & etc. The MC hides her editor, who can remember things.

Fool is a dark comedy written from the viewpoint of the Fool in King Lear. Lots of swearing and lots of sex references.

They did a really good job balancing each other out.

Fool is a hilarious new take on Shakespeare's King Lear...as seen through the eyes of the foolish liege's clownish jester, Pocket. A rousing tale of "gratuitous shagging, murder, spanking, maiming, treason, and heretofore unexplored heights of vulgarity and profanity," Fool is a modern masterwork of satiric wit and sublimely twisted genius.

I love how Moore spins Shakespeare. There is a vulgarity & comic thread that perfectly highlights the hubris at the heart of all tragedy. Pocket is the perfect fool who shows that often the fool is smartest, or at least the wiliest of all. The twists at the end are delightful. & overall I find Moore‘s version much more satisfying than the original...& not just because of all the heinous f***ery.

A bawdy retelling of Shakespeare's King Lear, this is not the type of book I'd normally take for a spin, but it was definitely a fun ride - if you're ok with an inordinate amount of shagging & cussing. Definitely more comedy than tragedy, which I liked. Don't miss the author's note at the end!
