A determined young police constable goes it alone against an enigmatic killer and her bosses in a series debut for fans of Sophie Hannah and Tana French The Burning Man. It's the name the media has given a brutal murderer who has beaten four young women to death before setting their bodies ablaze in secluded areas of London's parks. And now there's a fifth. Maeve Kerrigan is an ambitious detective constable, keen to make her mark on the murder task force. Her male colleagues believe Maeve's empathy makes her weak, but the more she learns about the latest victim, Rebecca Haworth, from her grieving friends and family, the more determined Maeve becomes to bring her murderer to justice. But how do you catch a killer no one has seen when so much of the evidence has gone up in smoke? Maeve's frenetic hunt for a killer in Jane Casey's gripping series debut will entrance even the most jaded suspense readers.

2024 Reread.

After 6 years, I've decided to reread this series before tackling book 11 - due to be released this year. First time around, I actually liked Rob & was rather irritated with what happens with his character in future books, & I'm intrigued to find out how reading the series with foreknowledge of that & the introduction of Derwent (whom I hated) will compare with reading it with fresh eyes. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf In this latest edition, there is an additional chapter at the end which deals with the moment Derwent first sees Maeve. Is it reconning? Maybe, but it does set things up quite nicely.

I have bumped up the rating for this one to 4🌟 I found Maeve a more sympathetic character this time around, & the storyline, whilst predictable, was good.

This was a really good, solid police procedural featuring an Irish detective working in England. Maeve is an engaging character, the story is well-written, and my pulse sped up during one critical scene. I did guess whodunnit pretty early, but the story was good enough that I wanted to see how it unfolded regardless.

For the past month or so I've been starting every Saturday with one hour of reading. Before the chores, before tackling my to-do list. One hour of disappearing into a good book. It is fast becoming my favorite way to kick off the weekend.

We're home! Vet visit went fine. I mean, Charlie thought he was going to die... He hates the vet... But she did not seem too worried so that's good news. He's on a special diet of rice and chicken for a while. Which he seems to be quite enjoying. Now we'll just keep doing that and hope it fixes the problem. We're back at our favorite Friday night joint.... The couch.

One of the best female detectives out there. A brilliant series and devoured books 1 - 8 last year, reading along with @EadieB and @Tove_Reads

Day 3 #Top20series #20series20days Maeve Kerrigan. Must read series! Absolutely fantastic literature! So worth reading! I realize I actually prefer series set in the countryside, small towns, remote areas, but this one is set in London. Great characters. Yes, I‘m a Maeve fan 😃 Jane Casey‘s other books are excellent reads as well.

Tove_Reads @andrew65 No wonder we got on this ride very late. How were we supposed to know it‘s an excellent series when there‘s no woman in a read coat on the cover? 4y

The trick with reviewing mysteries, even older ones like this book, is to make sure you don‘t spoil anything, right? So hard. So without spoiling anything, I‘ll just say that if you like character driven mysteries, you‘ll likely enjoy this book. I did. This is the first in a series featuring DC Maeve Kerrigan and it gives readers more than enough to want to keep reading the series. Recommended.

1. Jane Casey‘s Maeve Kerrigan series was a great addition this year.
2. Cozy recliner or my Tempurpedic adjustable bed.
3. My family is telling me I need to downsize my library.
4. Baby Yoda.
@gradcat Thanks for the tag

julesG Your family needs their heads examined. One does not simply downsize a library. A library means opportunity. 5y
EadieB @julesG My daughter is moving home with her 12 year old daughter and she would like to have her old bedroom back and her 12 year old needs the other bedroom so I will need to find another place for my books. Overall I really enjoyed this first book in the Maeve Kerrigan series. A good new character, and an interesting serial killer or not plot. I look forward to reading on in the series. My only slight gripe, and it is a slight gripe, is at times the story moved along a little too slowly, and felt it needed a bit more dialogue to inject more pace. The ratings for this series only get better so exciting times!

good debut of the Maeve Kerrigan series. Maeve, a female in a mostly male force. Bob Langton, a personal interest in Maeve. 4 women brutally murdered, set on fire. 5th victim is Rebecca Haworth and Maeve is determined to bring her murderer to justice even though she doesn't have much evidence. cleverly written with interesting characters, 2 point of views. Ending complete surprise. recommend this book to those who love psychological thrillers.

TrishB I love these already! Think Maeve is a great character! 6y

Thoughts about the book so far? Do you like Maeve? How about Louise? @Andrew65 @EadieB

Tove_Reads I find it strange that someone would hitch a ride from a strange man when there‘s a killer lose. Also, aiming to stab him to death. Carrying a knife is quite creepy, but I get that you are scared out there. I would choose pepper spray. @andrew65 @EadieB 6y
Tove_Reads Louise is a strange character. What was she trying to hide by cleaning the apartment? Gil is slimey, but I guess that‘s as far as he goes. I like Maeve, seems to be a workaholic though, and she‘s clearly not meant to be with Ian. @andrew65 @EadieB 6y
Tove_Reads @eadieb Are you enjoying the book? 6y

EadieB @Tove_Reads yes finished the first part too! I like Maeve too and agree about Louise. 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB @andrew65 We are reading three very different series! I like it! I have high expectations for all three series! 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads @Andrew65 I think they are all very good! Finished part 2 today! 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB I only have the last section left! 6y
Andrew65 Only just finished Chapter 2! 😂 @Tove_Reads @EadieB 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads The chapters are long! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB They are and I‘m very tired after a very busy week. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I can imagine, I don‘t know how you do it! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Sometimes neither do I! 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB @andrew65 There‘s so much snow here that‘s it‘s better to stay inside and read. We had yet another death in the family this week, and reading takes my mind off all this. 6y
Tove_Reads @Andrew65 @EadieB Can we read Whiteout after The Burning? I know have the first three folletts, finally! 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads That‘s fine with me. @Andrew65 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Sorry to hear that, sending my sympathies. Yes Whiteout is fine with me as it needs to go back to the library. @EadieB 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Thanks! And cool, I‘m ready now... a massive snowstorm about to start, so tomorrow I‘ll only go outside because of the dogs. @EadieB 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Just saw your message about weather and death in your family. Sorry to hear about that! We have been having wicked cold and snow too. I also woke up with a nasty cold today. The kind that makes you feel miserable! My Whiteout is due back soon too. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB We luckily missed most of the snow this week, were expected to be hit twice but the main bulk of the snow drifted further south, unusually. @Tove_Reads (edited) 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB Thanks! 12th death within a year. I reckon we could read Whiteout in 3-4 days, since it‘s not one of his long ones. Let me know when you are ready to start! @Andrew65 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Lucky you! Carol‘s area had 40 degrees below freezing this week and lots of snow! A polar vortex is what they are calling it. (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Yes been watching that and the temperatures online. Must be truly dreadful! 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB @andrew65 For the first time ever I got a text from the electricity company about how to prepare for the worst. Feels a bit creepy. I mean, we are used to bad weather, but global warming makes it more extreme. Have snow to my knees in my yard. 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads Wow! That is scary! Stay in, stay warm and enjoy your reading! 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads We all knew the person in the prologue couldn‘t be the killer. She had great coordination to stab him so effectively if she was so drunk. Yes the lift was plain stupid. @eadieb 6y
Andrew65 That cleaning of the apartment was quite bizarre. Why are we getting so much information from Louise‘s perspective? @Tove_Reads @EadieB (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I think that Rebecca‘s killer is not the burning man. The person that killed Rebecca wanted to make it look like the burning man. @Tove_Reads 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Louise seems to have known Rebecca better than anyone one else and seems to be used to cleaning up after Rebecca. @Tove_Reads (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB An interesting theory! 6y
Andrew65 Finally caught up, I‘m at the end of Chapter 9. @Tove_Reads @EadieB 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 That‘s great! Do you like it so far? 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB It is enjoyable and now finished up to the end of Today‘s section. If I had one complaint, I do feel the story is a bit long winded. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 The ending is too! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB 2 chapters to go! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Wow! You are really moving on! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Need to if I am to get to Whiteout. Can‘t read that in 4 days with three of those being work days. Just last big chapter to go. (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Not much dialog tends for slow reading of that chapter! Boo-hiss! (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB You know me I like dialogue and this has been lacking a bit in this book. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I know because I like dialogue too! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Such similar tastes and preferences in books! Finished! 🙌 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 You must be the male form of me or my brother from a different mother! (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Separated at birth! 😂 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 That sounds impossible! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB 😂😂😂 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Very funny! 6y
Tove_Reads It was a bit too much about being in Maeve‘s head getting to know the friends of the victim. But, in general this series seem to have a different pace, and I like the characters and setting. It felt a bit slow reading along a Scott Mariani book... 😃 But, I did like the book! @Andrew65 @EadieB 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Yes I agree overall a very good book, especially for the first one in a series, can see plenty of potential but a bit more pace and dialogue would make them even better. Compared to Ben Hope Books most would appear staid. 😂 (edited) 6y
Tove_Reads We have I hear sirens 22nd, and The Treatment on the first? @Andrew65 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Yes, then The Reckoning in the second half of March. Looks like we ended up choosing 3 good series! @eadieb (edited) 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Indeed! But, what else could we make than good choices??? @EadieB 6y

Tove_Reads @TrishB It‘s a bit different. I‘ve read so many dark, high-paced, international thrillers, or grim small town murderers etc. books lately, and this one is different. Yes, the murders are vulgar, but otherwise this one come closer to the skin and deeper into how people are on the surface versus what kind of people they really are. All this without being too psychological. 6y

@Andrew65 @EadieB Here are my suggestions for our next crime series. I miss Frieda Klein and I need a fix! Withdrawal symptoms. Bad, bad, bad. Let me know which series you two would like to read. Not to worry, these are just five out of about 20 I have on my mind... Have you read any of these series? All are new and unfamiliar to me.

EadieB I‘ve read Susan Hill and peter robinson 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB I‘ve also read all the Peter Robinson books. They are excellent. @Tove_Reads (edited) 6y
Andrew65 Will post mine a bit later. 6y

EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads on this list I will vote for Casey and Hewson series. 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB I‘ve become more and more interested in Casey‘s books. Already placed a hold. The new library has ordered two copies of the first book. Can‘t wait! 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads That‘s great! 6y
Andrew65 I will vote for Casey in first place and Henson in second place. @EadieB @Tove_Reads (edited) 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Oh no, do I need to find a Henson now??? 🤣🤣🤣 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads There‘s another option. Did Jim Henson ever write a crime book about Kermit the Frog or Miss Piggie? Stupid iPad self-correction. Just to be certain Hewson. 6y

I am posting this very late because there was a mix up at the post office and I almost didn't receive this!! I was a bit grumpy about it all to be honest!!

Thank you @thegirlwiththebookishcandle for the extra book (Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn) and the Haribo!!

#whidunituk

daydreamin_star Also @DeborahSmall, I am behind AGAIN because this month I have been away for it's entirety and I have been in a very big reading slump! However both this and this months will be winging their way to you on Monday xx 6y

Used bookstore haul with the hubs! I had to restrain myself, I had another stack bigger than this but I decided to save it for next time 🤣

Has anyone read amount by Lucinda Berry or Jane Casey? They're new to me authors.

Absolutely beautiful notebook @TrishB and very excited to start a new series, will it be complusory reading for me now...?!

thanks for the lovely bookmark and card @ShookBelf I still need to read the Colleen Hoover - do you mind if I'm bit late...?

TrishB I mistakenly brought number 7 of this series so of course had to go back and get 1-6, it did hook me from the beginning. I think with these series it‘s always the main characters if you like them you want to read more! I hope you enjoy. 6y
ShookBelf @jhod - no rush for the book so take your time xx 6y
jhod @shookbelf I actually read it all in one go today! (Though I probably won't get chance to send it til Saturday) I really didn't like it.... yet i finished it in one go, and it made me cry - so it affected me somehow!! Thanks for the pick! 6y

Other than quite a bit of violence toward women that didn‘t seem fully necessary to the story, I really enjoyed this one. It was more procedural than thriller, and the serial killer wasn‘t the real story, but I liked the cast of characters, especially for the first in a series.

Two of these books I still have yet to read but I did read Liar Liar and loved it. I have a massive TBR and keep pushing books I‘ve owned for a while now to the bottom pile! 😂 #burnittotheground #getmovin

MicheleinPhilly I have the Jane Casey on my shelves. ☺️ 7y
eanderson Yes! I need to read at least the Burning this summer! I've owned this book for 2 years now. 😕 7y

A quick and interesting read! I love it when books explain a little more about procedural aspects of investigation and autopsy, this one gives some great details and keeps the story moving along nicely.

A decent start to the series, with a solid plot and it was readable, if a tad predictable. Rating: 3.5/5

Congrats Rachel 🎉🎉 and thanks for the giveaway.
As we share a love of many thriller series - I‘m recommending this one if you haven‘t got to it yet.
This is the first one.

#TBRBingo I'm in like sin! I should not buy any books until I get at least one row cleared! I'm going to try really hard.... my husband says he doesn't think I will make it to the weekend without buying a book. Outside of #botm I'm now on a self-imposed book buying ban! This is an awesome idea.

WhatDeeReads Oh another bingo card full on back BOTM titles. It's so funny. 7y
JazzFeathers Let's do this! Though l think you're not trying hard enough. One raw. Come on! 😜 7y
eanderson @WhatDeeReads I usually have read most of my BOTM box by the end of the month but I've been slacking! 😀 7y
eanderson @JazzFeathers hahaha! I am a slower reader so this will take me at least a month- two months to get through. I'm thinking about having to take out 2 rows. I'm so weak when it comes to book! It's like they call to me! 😜 7y

Yes she should have! And friends should not leave drunken friends out on their own!
New series for me. I brought one the other day and realised it was number 7 - so this is number 1.

Mehso-so

A little lackluster. The switching points of view wasn't very well done, and main villain was a bit of an obvious stock character. I didn't really find her story compelling or well fleshed out.
