Queenie | Candice Carty-Williams
'Inspirational, funny and wise' - Kit de Waal Queenie Jenkins can't cut a break. Well, apart from the one from her long term boyfriend, Tom. That's definitely just a break though. Definitely not a break up. Stuck between a boss who doesn't seem to see her, a Carribbean family who don't seem to listen (if it's not Jesus or water rates, they're not interested), and trying to fit in two worlds that don't really understand her, it's no wonder she's struggling. She was named to be queen of everything. So why is she finding it so hard to rule her own life? A darkly comic and bitingly subversive take on modern life, QUEENIE will have you nodding in recognition, crying in solidarity, and rooting for this unforgettable character every step of the way. Perfect for fans of Dolly Alderton, Bryony Gordon and Dawn O'Porter, and anyone who loved Fleabag and Dear White People. ******** Praise for QUEENIE: 'Candice gives so generously with her joy, pain and humour, that we cannot help but become fully immersed in the life of Queenie - a beautiful and compelling book.' - Afua Hirsch 'Even in 500 words I knew that there was something special... fresh and honest and set in a world that I want to know more of.' - Jojo Moyes

I loved the main character of Queenie. She was deeply flawed but she changed and grew through so much bad luck and bad choices. Her friend group was great, too, because they all had distinct and real personalities.

A year in the life of Queenie Jenkins. Yes, it‘s funny but it‘s also heart-breakingly self-destructive. I found myself unexpectedly crying at one critical reveal. Strong recommend.

And if you are in the UK it‘s a Waterstones book of the month for Feb so you can buy it and get a free coffee in branched with a cafe. #LitsyAtoZ

Book read in Contemporary-A-Thon.I understand why some persons didn't like the book, Queenie engaged herself in a self destructive behavior in many occasions. But this can happen in real life.It is hard to break the cycle but she did it with the support of her family, friends & counseling.I loved her family and "their drama" as she said. The race & cultural discrimination topic were well explained.Loved the book from a mental health perspective.4⭐️

I loved the writing but I didn't always feel sympathetic towards the character of Queenie. I think she moaned too much and relied on her friends to sort out her problems for her.

Decided to chance this based on the blurbs and hype. Started off well, this story of twenty something Queenie trying to make sense of her life in London. Okay, she makes bad choices and tries to fix that through therapy. Great voice, funny at times, and richly drawn characters but I just could not bear Queenie making the same old, same old mistakes with abhorrent Tinder men. Enough already! I‘m sure if I was 20 now I would love it, not now.

The title character here was a mess in her relationships with men and the trauma of her childhood. How she worked through those issues may have been a compelling story, but it was muddied by various issues that were thrown in to make a statement but were never fully integrated into the plot (ie, gentrification, MeToo, BLM). 3⭐️

I also finished Queenie this weekend. I‘ve been reading this ebook off and on all month. At first I struggled to get into this one as Queenie spiraled downward making one bad decision after another. However about half way through it started to come together. In the end I enjoyed seeing her journey. How therapy helped her overcome the anxiety and panic attacks and also helped her examine why this was happening. I ended up enjoying her voice. 3.5 🌟

4thhouseontheleft I felt the same way! If I ranked all the books I put on my #newyearwhodis list, this was Number 20. It went off and on a few times before I decided to keep it on the list! 4w

#NewYearWhoDis @Emilymdxn @monalyisha
I'm thankful to Emily for getting me to pick up this book! I wasn't sure how I felt about it for the first several hours, and the accent+slang were an adjustment, but by the end I was so invested in Queenie and really loved her! Cried so much at the end, such a beautiful story of family and friendship and dating struggles, and of brokenness and trauma and also healing and recovery. ❤️

Emilymdxn I‘m so glad you liked it! I loved queenie so much it‘s so rare for me to identify so completely with a MC, she was flawed but I loved her. It‘s a gorgeous ode to London too, it‘s how I‘d like people from other countries to read about london and I wish there were more books like it getting published more widely 4w
Caterina @Emilymdxn I spent two days in London some years ago, and this book makes me want to actually spend some time there. 😊 I also enjoyed that I'm the same age as Queenie (turning 26 on Saturday), recently started online dating (Tinder), and had a three year serious relationship that ended poorly (a little over a year ago). I feel like I don't read many books with characters in their mid- to late-twenties, just struggling along! 4w

Based on the long list of blurbs, I‘m in the minority in largely disliking this. Did enjoy the friend group, they felt very real & genuine. Appreciate a Black woman w/anxiety being allowed to show vulnerability that Black women rarely get to. But the repetitive “unsafe sex, clinic visit, self lecture, unsafe sex, clinic visit, self lecture” got tired, & pining after her loser ex was absurd. Also a moment of anti-Semitism that pissed me off. 2/5 ⭐️

Oh Queenie.... I just wanted to grab her in a huge hug, and tell her it‘s going to get easier, it‘s going to get better, it‘s going to be OK. As twenty-something Queenie navigates friendships, work, family and men in London, her self-worth and self-esteem nose dive and self-destructive behavior seems inevitable. As she struggles to keep herself afloat both financially and mentally, I grew more and more in love with her character. (continued... ⬇️)

KarenUK For a novel that seems kind of fun and raunchy on the surface, there is so much more heart and depth than there initially seems. As Queenie faces issues of mental health, casual racism, abusive relationships and just trying to grow up, I connected with her more and more..... I‘ll be thinking about Queenie for a really long time. 💕

I had time to start this #audiobook today since I had a few loads of laundry, etc. to do! 👍 I had to put it down after 2 hours, because I had other things to do but also because the Britishness was overwhelming. 😂 The accent plus the slang on audio require some getting used to! 😂 I'm enjoying it so far though, and thankful that I'm back to dating again and not in the thick of heartbreak anymore. #NewYearWhoDis @Emilymdxn

A remarkable novel to touch on the difficult and relevant topics of sexism, prejudice, & mental health, yet it has its light-hearted moments, and a good cultural & society insight. Queenie is a character you‘ll eventually sympathise with, and inspired by, for all her honesty and courage in the end. 👇

The narrator was AWESOME. She kept the content easy to stay engaged with.

Queenie is inspiring and relatable. I could never pretend to understand the racism she faced, even (appallingly) in her sexual encounters, but I can understand the depression paired with anxiety that drives bad decisions that you regret before making. The rawness of her story brings her to life. I hope to someday see a book #2 of a happy and healed Queenie.
