Aesop's Fables
Aesop's Fables | Aesopus
The fables of Aesop have become one of the most enduring traditions of European culture, ever since they were first written down nearly two millennia ago. Aesop was reputedly a tongue-tied slave who miraculously received the power of speech; from his legendary storytelling came the collectionsof prose and verse fables scattered throughout Greek and Roman literature. First published in English by Caxton in 1484, the fables and their morals continue to charm modern readers: who does not know the story of the tortoise and the hare, or the boy who cried wolf? This new translation is the first to represent all the main fable collections in ancient Latin and Greek, arranged according to the fables' contents and themes. It includes 600 fables, many of which come from sources never before translated into English.

As historic and fun as these fables are, we should move on from them. These fables are sexist because all of the stories only have male characters. They are innocent, but we have to move on from them.

Most of Aesop's fables feature personified animals, which generally have a one-to-one symbolic relationship with a vice or virtue. For example, the fox frequently symbolizes cleverness; the hare, agility; the bull, recklessness; the donkey, fatuousness; and the ant, industriousness.

Such a wonderful collection of tales. What I thought would be a one night read stretched into longer because a lot of the stories were thought provoking and required some logic. Good for a cozy night with a warm drink! #aesopsfables #shortstories #storycollection #fable

this is a collection. of the origin stories of propbably most of the moral tales you hear. While aesop‘s exact life isn‘t chronicled clearly in history, his work has lived on

I‘ve heard or read a lot of these stories over the years, but I learned I‘m much more familiar with the ones that include animals rather than people or gods as characters. Some of the stories have decent reminders for life, but too many of them seemed to say you cannot change your lot in life.

Daisey @tangled_mind I find it interesting that although I recognize most of them, the ones I don‘t usually involve human characters. 4y

Couldn‘t have gotten through this without Serial Reader! The little fables were often weird, sometimes funny, and the perfect length for work breaks.

I had to read this one for the #1001books list but I have to admit it bored the hell out of me. I‘m sure it‘s a masterpiece which influenced many later books but listening to all those short stories (many of which I knew already because I am old and wise 😂) just was too much. I am glad I had the lovely and beautiful landscape of upstate New York to enjoy in the mean time.

(Pic: Aurora, Finger Lakes, New York)

AshleyHoss820 I personally enjoyed it but mostly because it gave me major nostalgia, which helps. 😂 I also read a few stories then read something else. All at once would be a bit tedious. 😊 5y
Redwritinghood Oh, I remember reading these as a kid. Not sure I would enjoy them as much as an adult. 5y
Kalalalatja I feel you! I read them all too close together, and they all got jumbled together in my mind 😅 5y
See All 10 Comments
BarbaraBB @AshleyHoss820 I read them in between other books but even that didn‘t help! 5y
BarbaraBB @Redwritinghood I read many of them as a kid too, a completely different experience! @Kalalalatja exactly. And I think Andersen‘s fairytales are way better, for kids as well as adults! 5y
AshleyHoss820 @BarbaraBB Oh, man!! That sucks! Some things are better left in our childhood, sometimes! 😄😄😄 5y
Liz_M I think this is best in an abridged form and only trading one or two stories a day. 5y
Cinfhen Just missed you!! We were in Lake Placid 😘 5y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen We keep training eachother! I was impressed by upstate New York. I had no idea it would be so green and beautiful! 5y

The North Wind and The Sun, one of the many fables by Aesop, is about the Wind and the Sun bet on which can force a man to remove a coat. We know who won!
Moral of the story: ‘Gentleness and kind persuasion win where force and bluster fail.‘

There‘re many fables involving foxes in Aesop‘s Fables, all of them morally interesting, and many depict the fox as a #cunning and sly animal.
