The Lies of Locke Lamora
The Lies of Locke Lamora | Scott Lynch
Remarkable . . . Scott Lynch's first novel, The Lies of Locke Lamora, exports the suspense and wit of a cleverly constructed crime caper into an exotic realm of fantasy, and the result is engagingly entertaining. The Times(London)An orphan's life is harshand often shortin the mysterious island city of Camorr. But young Locke Lamora dodges death and slavery, becoming a thief under the tutelage of a gifted con artist. As leader of the band of light-fingered brothers known as the Gentleman Bastards, Locke is soon infamous, fooling even the underworld's most feared ruler. But in the shadows lurks someone still more ambitious and deadly. Faced with a bloody coup that threatens to destroy everyone and everything that holds meaning in his mercenary life, Locke vows to beat the enemy at his own brutal gameor die trying.Praise for The Lies of Locke LamoraFresh, original, and engrossing . . . gorgeously realized.George R. R. MartinRight now, in the full flush of a second reading, I think The Lies of Locke Lamora is probably in my top ten favorite books ever. Maybe my top five. If you haven't read it, you should. If you have read it, you should probably read it again.Patrick Rothfuss, New York Times bestselling author of The Name of the WindA unique fantasy milieu peopled by absorbing, colorful characters . . . Locke's wit and audacity endear him to victims and bystanders alike. The Seattle TimesA true genre bender, at home on almost any kind of fiction shelf . . . Lynch immediately establishes himself as a gifted and fearless storyteller, unafraid of comparisons to Silverberg and Jordan, not to mention David Liss and even Dickens.Booklist(starred review)High-octane fantasy . . . a great swashbuckling yarn of a novel.Richard MorganFrom the Hardcover edition.

A fun revisit with an old favorite. If you love high fantasy and great world-building, Scott Lynch, IMO, is a better writer than Martin of Rothfuss. And the good thing about his Gentleman Bastards series is that they can serve as stand-alones so you don't have to wait for freaking years to find out what happens (I'm talking to you, GRRM...and Rothfuss) .

This book was ok. I found myself wanting to know what happens but also found parts of it slow moving. I also was a fan of the time jumping, it kept taking me out of the story.

A million thanks to @Maike for the recommendation.

So much fun. Cunning, cussing, well-planned heists, disguises, interesting back stories, wonderful writing and great character development.

And a cliffhanger, of sorts. 😉

Listened to the #audiobook. The narrator had very posh pronunciation, reminded me of the Queen at times.

Do you like special editions of books? I do! Especially if it‘s a favorite book because it‘s a good excuse to get another copy... 😂
I actually reread this book via audiobook last month and I think I loved it even more than the first time! Finished this #audiobook today; quite the ride! For a second, I thought Locke was done for, but then I remembered there was a sequel, so it helped me continue reading, knowing it would turn out well - he lusted for life and so was able to defeat the bad guy.

I passed the book along to a fellow coworker who enjoys fantasy novels and still only reads paper books! Made my day 😊

Just finished this monster and I‘ve got to say that while it had excellent banter that was marvelous and I loooooved the heist and conning elements; I can‘t say this was a winner for me 🤭.
The crassness and language, the gore and death and constant angst I experienced at the hands of this book landed it at a solid ⭐️⭐️for me self.
I‘ve read it, it took twists and turns I didn‘t expect, and now I can move on. I probably won‘t pick up the sequel.

I have no idea why this line had me laughing 😂 .”This new fiction had the fictional backing—“ 😂
Liking this one after the initial shock of the crass language. —had to accept that lower classes in this kind of society did speak like that. And it was reasonable for the subject matter. (Though it is a fantasy world so I would have appreciated some fantasy based cussing instead of our own.)

If you‘re in the market for an excellent fantasy adventure, look no further than the Gentlemen Bastards! This is a super adventure-y, heist-y read, and it is one of a very few 700-ish page chunksters which I did NOT feel would have benefited from considerable trimming. It‘s pretty great on audio, too! There is a fair amount of violence, however. 5 ⭐️

I have a problem here and I‘m not talking about this atrocity of a cover. 🤢
The Hoopla audiobook app makes backing up or going forward a royal pain. The scrubbing bar is SO TINY! If your book is more than a couple of hours long, it‘s an exercise in frustration. Am I missing something?

Scott Lynch creates a fantastical world with intriguing characters in The Lies of Locke Lamora. As the first in a series, he must do plenty of world-building in his island city of Camorr. But that never overshadows the action and excitement of the story line. And his characters are first-rate. It‘s 1 part long-game cons, 1 part thievery, and 2 parts skullduggery.

Pickpick

I got a little bored in the middle, but I‘m so glad I stuck with it. I really like the snarky Locke and the ever loyal Jean. It reminded me of Six of Crows in some ways. It‘s a lengthy listen, but definitely worth it.
