Mehso-so

1/? There's a risk with sci fi that the character development, even the plot will suffer in competition with the author's need to explore important ideas or inventive concepts.
Case in point: Seivarden's change of mind after the bridge accident felt a little too convenient for where the author wanted to take the story next, and I just wasn't as invested from that point on.

Robotswithpersonality 2/? I'm not big on aristocracy/monarchy/military hierarchy, pretty clearly fascist, and the none-too-shocking idea that they could be corrupt/corrupted, and that was a big part of the story.
And then with the genocide and colonialism and enslavement and taking over people's minds, which kind of all felt like background to the protagonist's journey.
4mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? I think there was supposed to be a bit more interpersonal drama, but due to the unlikeability that Radchaai society fosters, I wasn't as invested in the relationships, so even if the narrative was leaning towards fraught exchanges it didn't quite land for me.
So far as the exploration of ideas went, I felt like much was touched on but not necessarily explored in depth:
4mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/? The notion of identity, sense of self, going from Ship to Ancillary, the limits of a single human body/mind.
The denial of a split self for political cohesion, different bodies/copies of a mind, acting against each other.
Parallel of split self, horrified at actions - Justice of Toren and what various ancillaries did, and then Mianaai and their actions with the Garseddai.
4mo
Robotswithpersonality 5/? There's also the less emphasized pairing of an individual who lost their ship (Seivarden) and a ship who lost its self, it's people (Justice of Toren).

Compelling descriptions and hints of world building I can appreciate but again, definitely felt bogged down by the societal structure concerns.
4mo
Robotswithpersonality 6/6 It's hard to view it as social commentary when it just feels like the stated reality next to what the main players' current revenge plan is, and really only seems to become the focus of the last tyrant standing at the end of the book.

I'm assume that much of this goes further in depth in future books, but I just didn't like any of this enough to want to read on in the series.

⚠️Drug use, detoxing, mentions of suicide

Still confusing, listening to it for the first time. She just dumps you into an alien culture and you have to figure it out on your own. Will go on to book two soonish!

#UnpopularOpinion

Not for me. Too much Bla, too little action. It reminded me of Le Guin's Left Hand of Darkness, of Wells's Murderbot and maybe Star Trek's Seven-of-Nine - but the story lacked Le Guin's world building skills and wasn't the least bit as funny as Wells's Murderbot.

Just finished this for the second time, so I guess I like it 😂.

The narrative is not the most straight forward, bouncing between the narrator's timelines, and the narrator's differing perspectives (same narrator, more than one point of view). Interesting world building and raises neat questions about what is self. Looking forward to rereading the later books in the series.

In terms of space opera and science fiction this, the beginning of the trilogy, has it. The world building at first was a bit confusing, but as the setting fell into focus, I was duly impressed by its vastness, complexity, and like any good epic, it‘s necessity to the story. In the class of The Expanse and the Culture novels by the late Ian M Banks, this is modern Sci-Fi at its best.

83/150 At first I wasn't sure about this book, I found the gender placement confusing, but once I got used to everyone, whether male or female, being addressed as she/her, I could delve to this amazing story. The character development and world building are first rate, I even felt a little sympathy for the villain. 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The shortest summary for this one is that a ship's ai, which previously inhabited many bodies, reflects on how they came to be only a single body. I loved quite a lot about this book. I especially liked how the ai's use only of feminine pronouns to describe all genders completely removed the importance of gender roles to the reader. I can see that being distressing for people who are regularly misgendered, though. #SciFi

Traci1 @shanaqui that makes sense. And I imagine if I read these a second time I'd at least understand what's going on better than this time through. I just get so lost when she's talking as her ancillary the whole esk, var, etc thing. 4y

I still have the third book to read in this trilogy, featuring Breq, an AI that once controlled a warship and thousands of human hybrid ancillaries, but who now is only one body and the sole survivor of Justice Torren. So April is my first month participating in #BookSpin so not sure what the rules are about end of month posting.

I read my #doublespin and #triplespin books and enjoyed them. However, I just could not get into the tagged book. I started reading and got 20 pages in but I felt like I was playing catch-up the whole time. I had no idea what was going on. I don‘t want to completely bail because I liked Provenance (set in same world) 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

TheAromaofBooks haha well, no specific rules, so you are doing great! Mostly, as long as people tag me with their lists at the beginning of the month & in their reviews throughout the month so I can check them off, that's all I “need“ for the challenge - but I love ALL the posts & your wrap up is lots of fun!! May have told you, but if you read your #bookspin book later than April & review it, just let me know it's April's book & you'll still get credit!! 5y

If you want some sci fi that grapples with colonialism this is for you. We follow Breq - in the past as a soldier in a colonising army, one of thousands of human bodies powered by a spaceship AI mind - and in the present where she is alone, her AI mind the last piece fractured from the ship and bodies she used to inhabit. There is a mystery here to be solved as well as a complex galaxy of planets with different cultures and politics ⬇️

Centique It requires concentration - as Breq in the past may be having two concurrent conversations in different locations and different bodies. Also Breq doesn‘t recognise gender so everyone is she - which I thought was a cool twist when occasionally other characters do see someone as a he. ⬇️ (edited) 5y
Centique Really thought provoking - quite complicated, but that‘s nice for a change, and the characters and world building are wonderful. The AI setup is a darker, more serious take than the Becky Chambers/Martha Wells oeuvre IMO (love those) - but doesn‘t cross into horror at all. Definitely going to read all of these 🌟🌟🌟🌟 5y

I bought this book 3.5 years ago. I tried reading it multiple times. I tried again after reading Becky Chamber's book where a ship is also transferred to a human body, and it was easier for me to read. The first 80% of the book was still really slow reading. But I really liked the last 20%!

I never really figured out what was going on. No physical description and everyone gets female pronouns irrespective of gender. The lead acts on unknown impulse for unknown reasons — until she doesn‘t anymore. Seivarden changes personality halfway through for unexplained reason. I could never figure out anyone‘s motivation — hero, villain, bit players. No one will disobey the Lord! Everyone is disobeying the Lord! If I do this they must ... Why?

Yossarian Unsure if I‘ll read Book 2. Not next, at least. 5y

Just finished it last night and I can't wait to start the next book in the series (after some Blake Crouch and James S.A. Corey detours). It took a bit to understand and get used to the “multiple personalities“ of the heroine and the gender approach but there are so many original ideas that I loved it in the end. I recommend it a lot but make sure you give it some time to understand how the narratives (and main character “facets“) tie together.

It's not really a secret that I love space operas and I love books that examine and grapple with the concept of empire and civilization so honestly I'm shocked it took me this long to read Ancillary Justice. It took me a second to get accustomed to the diffused nature of the narrator but I dig it so much. Definitely going to pick up the next novel.

manifestsanity What other space operas are your personal favorites? 5y
Limonotte @manifestsanity As far as recent faves go, I'm still low-key obsessing about A Memory Called Empire, which I can now tell got a lot of influence from Ancillary Justice. It's got a similar vibe re: a psychologically fragmented narrator and a beautiful/terrible galactic empire. 5y

This book came very highly recommended, but I‘m finding it practically incomprehensible. Am I just not smart enough?

“Justice of Ente Seven Issa did many things One Esk did not ...”

“She was probably Male, to judge from the angular mazelike patterns quilting her shirt...”

Are these words? Do they form sentences? What?

Deifio Oh yes, that book is something. I liked it a lot too, but it did take some time to get used to the writing style. The main thing is, that everyone is grammatically a “she“, at least in the Radch Empire. tbh I can't remember who was male and female in this book. 😂 Another major point is the main protagonist, who is an AI on a ship, well the AI basically is the ship! Well, I'd say give it another go ;-) 5y
Yossarian @Deifio I had a good sci-fi fantasy trilogy run with The Three Body trilogy and the Fifth Season trilogy. This one is threatening to kill my mojo, though. I‘ll give it a few more chapters to see if I can break through the lingo. 5y
shanaqui Very simply: “[Character #1] did many things [character #2] did not“.

More complicatedly, “Justice of Ente Seven Issa“ designates a particular character by the ship they come from (Justice of Ente) and then their decade (Issa) and number within the decade (Seven). “Justice of Toren One Esk“ is the first member of the Esk decade on Justice of Toren.
5y
See All 7 Comments
Yossarian @shanaqui I think maybe there are two kind of exposition you need in science fiction — world building exposition where you explain how things are different from our world, and linguistic exposition where you explain words that exist to describe things that don‘t exist in our world. But when you start using the linguistic part to explain the world building part, you are just over complicating everything. 5y
shanaqui @Yossarian I don't agree, probably because I had no trouble and enjoy having to think a little when I read, but I do think it's a matter of taste. I love the Imperial Radch books, personally! :) 5y
Lindy @Yossarian How did you get on with this? I absolutely loved it from the start, even the bewilderment of not understanding the unfamiliar terms. The terms make sense as you get further in to the story. Maybe it‘s not the right series for you right now, but since you enjoyed The Three Body Problem, I think you will enjoy this too. 5y
Yossarian @Lindy I‘m plugging along — about halfway through. I‘m catching on to the lingo, but not a lot has ... HAPPENED. There‘s a present where the main character is trying to acquire a gun. There‘s a flashback where there is “intrigue”, but I am not yet intrigued. I‘ll finish it eventually... as for the rest of the trilogy ... 5y
