Talking to the Dead
Talking to the Dead: A Novel | Harry Bingham
44 posts | 26 read | 37 to read
A mesmerizing and thrilling novelperfect for fans of Tana French and Stieg Larssonthat introduces a modern, unforgettable rookie cop whose past is as fascinating and as deadly as the crimes she investigates. NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The Boston Globe The Seattle Times SHE KNOWS WHAT ITS LIKE. . . . At first, the murder scene appears sad, but not unusual: a young woman undone by drugs and prostitution, her six-year-old daughter dead alongside her. But then detectives find a strange piece of evidence in the squalid house: the platinum credit card of a very wealthyand long deadsteel tycoon. What is a heroin-addicted hooker doing with the credit card of a well-known and powerful man who died months ago? This is the question that the most junior member of the investigative team, Detective Constable Fiona Griffiths, is assigned to answer. But D.C. Griffiths is no ordinary cop. Shes earned a reputation at police headquarters in Cardiff, Wales, for being odd, for not picking up on social cues, for being a little overintense. And theres that gap in her past, the two-year hiatus that everyone assumes was a breakdown. But Fiona is a crack investigator, quick and intuitive. She is immediately drawn to the crime scene, and to the tragic face of the six-year-old girl, who she is certain has something to tell her . . . something that will break the case wide open. Ignoring orders and protocol, Fiona begins to explore far beyond the rich mans credit card and into the secrets of her seaside city. And when she uncovers another dead prostitute, Fiona knows that shes only begun to scratch the surface of a dark world of crime and murder. But the deeper she digs, the more danger she risksnot just from criminals and killers but from her own past . . . and the abyss that threatens to pull her back at any time. BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Harry Bingham's Love Story, with Murders. Praise for Talking to the Dead Gritty, compelling . . . a procedural unlike any other you are likely to read this year.USA Today With Detective Constable Fiona Fi Griffiths, Harry Bingham . . . finds a sweet spot in crime fiction . . . think Stieg Larssons Lisbeth Salander . . . A former prostitute and drug addict, who seemed to have been turning her life around, is found dead in a squat with the body of her 6 year old daughter. Next to her body is a credit card belonging to a multi-millionaire who had died in a plane crash 6 months earlier.

rwmg Rather grittier than the mysteries I usually read. The only reason I kept going was the intriguing character of DC Fiona Griffiths, the most junior member of the investigating team, and the gradual reveal of part of her back-story. I'm not sure though whether finding out more of it is enough to keep me going. I can recognise the book was very well done, but just not my cup of tea, so I'll still give it a Pick. 2w

First off Fiona Griffiths finds a young woman undone by drugs and prostitution, her six-year-old daughter dead alongside her. Then she finds the platinum credit card of a very wealthy--and long dead--steel tycoon. What is a heroin-addicted hooker doing with the credit card of a well-known and powerful man who died months ago?

EadieB Fiona Griffiths is a bit odd and suffers from Cotard's Syndrome, which is a condition of depression and psychosis. She is immediately drawn to the crime scene, and to the tragic face of the six-year-old girl, who she is certain has something to tell her . . . something that will break the case wide open. When she uncovers another dead prostitute, Fiona knows that she's only begun to scratch the surface of a dark world of crime and murder. 2y
EadieB This book is an excellent start to a new series. It has a clever plot with original characters that starts out slowly but develops into an intense drama. I am going to investigate the rest of the series and I'm happy to find a new series to read. 2y

Neither of these two short stories are in the database so I‘m tagging them under the first book. I received both of these when I signed up for the author‘s new letter, I think.

The Night Beat is about Fiona Griffiths‘ first night on patrol. There isn‘t a lot of development so it‘s best read after book one, IMO. I enjoyed it.

Lev in Glasgow should be read after book two. It‘s his POV on something he does for Fiona in the second book.

@Tove_Reads it was very tricky (I almost chose Sherlock) but Fiona Griffiths has to be my fave detective as she's persistent and unusual in the way she solves crimes.

Image is Sophie Rundle as Fiona in Sky Living's adaptation of the first novel. Unfortunately I don't think it was re-commissioned 😔

@TrishB @DeborahSmall @ScorpioBookDreams & the rest of the #whodunituk crew! 😂

TrishB This is so hard!! 6y
PandaCakes Tough choice, nomination Philip Marlowe, winner is Harry Dresden because he overcomes every obstacle and has a unorthodox sense of humor 6y

I realized the other day just how many series I own at least the first book in and am trying to start chipping away. Read Book 1 of Ann Cleeves‘ Shetland series yesterday, now on to this.

#StartaSeries

Ashley_Nicoletto I start all my series, but I never finish them. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 6y
jenniferw88 One of my favourite series! I hope you enjoy it! 6y
eanderson Same boat... I keep buying them with the intention of starting that series next but then something else grabs my attention. 🤦‍♀️ 6y

MicheleinPhilly @Ashley_Nicoletto I think I‘m up to date on only 2 series out of dozens. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 6y
MicheleinPhilly @jenniferw88 So far, so good! I know it‘s popular around here. 6y
MicheleinPhilly @eanderson It‘s those darn $.99/$1.99 deals. I must have 20+ “first in the series” books. And then I really like the first (when I actually read them) but don‘t want to pay full price for the next installments. 6y

This was my choice for a book about a woman with mental illness for #ReadingWomenChallenge. The main character is a police officer in Wales with Cotard‘s delusion. The mystery/procedural itself was a bit too secondary and the cop got away with a little too much rule breaking, but I will read more from the series.

I‘m not going to make it :( this is the last book I need to finish #booked2018 but I‘m only a third of the way through and there‘s just no way :( but I did finish four challenges and half of another, and only one book missing on this one, so still a pretty good year. I‘m still going to finish this book, it just won‘t be in time.

I didn‘t need to fall into another series, but I have. While I don‘t think the plot was special, the MC, D.C. Fiona Griffiths definitely is. She had a breakdown as a teenager suffering from Cotard‘s Syndrome and is still affected by it. Fi is a little odd and struggles to respond to social cues. She is also cheeky and funny. I think I was totally charmed by her and will continue with the series. #Booked2018 #MCwithinvisibleillness

Paperback or ebook, and it tends not to matter. When it comes to series, it depends on the length of the books - for example, Harry Potter and Harry Bingham's novels are generally paperbacks (but Harry Potter is also on my Kindle), but Game of Thrones is just on Kindle as I have no shelf space left! #bookishquestionoftheweek @BookishGirl06

monkeygirlsmama I love all formats. However, I've become especially fond of ebooks since moving overseas for business. I don't have access to print books in English where I live, so this way I still fill my addiction. 7y
flip58 Paperbacks are my preference. 7y
Currey I tend to get physical books if I think I will pass them on to my husband, mother or sister. My husband prefers physical books. For travel and some books I know I alone will read I get e-books. Also, I get library books any way they come. I have also read an e-book and then had to turn around and get a physical copy because I loved it so much I wanted someone else to read it.... 7y
See All 8 Comments
unreal Paperbacks, nothing beats the feel of them. 7y
hgrimes I don't have strong preferences on hardback vs paperback, but I just don't like e-books. I don't entirely know what my problem is with e-books, I wish I liked that format. I guess I am old-fashioned. 7y
Jaimelire I don't discriminate... 7y
Conservio I don't really care. I usually buy paperbacks because I'm cheap. While I like my book series to all look similar, it doesn't stop me from buying a mismatch. Hell, my "sweep" series of fourteen books is made up of 3 different covers. One is a 3 book omnibus ? (edited) 7y

Love, love, love Harry Bingham's crime novels set in Wales.
It's one of the few series I'm collecting in paperback - the rest are on Kindle. @rabbitprincess if you enjoy Talking to the Dead, reading order is left to right (but you probably know this already!)

rabbitprincess Excellent! I don't usually read series in order, but with this one I might bc I'm starting at the beginning anyway 😄 8y
jenniferw88 @rabbitprincess it's kind of necessary to read in order, as the sub plot continues in each. They could probably be read alone (I actually started with #2, 'Love Story, With Murders', but then went back and started from the beginning) but it might be slightly confusing if you don't know what happens previously! 8y
rabbitprincess @jenniferw88 Oh yeah, that's what I did with Three Pines. Started with the sixth one, then went back to the first and worked my way back. With new-to-me mystery series I want the main plot to be of interest to me in my first installment. Then I fill in the backstory with later volumes 😀 8y
