Moriarty (Bound for Schools & Libraries)
Moriarty (Bound for Schools & Libraries) | Anthony Horowitz
Internationally bestselling author Anthony Horowitz's nail-biting new novel plunges us back into the dark and complex world of Detective Sherlock Holmes and Professor James Moriarty in the aftermath of their fateful struggle at the Reichenbach Falls.Days after Holmes and Moriarty disappear into the waterfall's churning depths, Frederick Chase, a senior investigator at New York's infamous Pinkerton Detective Agency, arrives in Switzerland. Chase brings with him a dire warning: Moriarty's death has left a convenient vacancy in London's criminal underworld. There is no shortage of candidates to take his place including one particularly fiendish criminal mastermind.Chase is assisted by Inspector Athelney Jones, a Scotland Yard detective and devoted student of Holmes's methods of deduction, whom Conan Doyle introduced in The Sign of Four. The two men join forces and fight their way through the sinuous streets of Victorian London in pursuit of this sinister figure, a man much feared but seldom seen, who is determined to stake his claim as Moriarty's successor.Riveting and deeply atmospheric, Moriarty is the first Sherlock Holmes novel sanctioned by the author's estate since Horowitz's House of Silk."

Horowitz is the only writer authorized by Doyle's estate to write novels regarding Sherlock Holmes. The two main characters, Frederick Chase and Athelney Jones (seen in Doyle's “The Adventure of the Six Napoleons“) play out the archetypal roles of Holmes and Watson as they trail a criminal who is now in London attempting to take over Moriarty's territory after his supposed death by Holmes in the fight over the Reichenbach Falls. Fun for SH fans.

Hmmmm.....sorry mug of tea but positive vibes have left the room. So... I enjoyed the style of writing which is why I'm choosing so-so and not pan.

Problems - I guessed the big
twist within the first couple of pages.... Then dismissed it as unlikely based on ridiculousness and cheese factor. My bad, that dismissed idea IS indeed The Twist 🤮🤮

Second problem a bit spoilery so will hide it in comments if you don't want to see.

Balibee146 While I appreciate that the disabled person as evil villian trope is relevant to the times and social context of the original stories, it makes me sick to see it here again. I have a background in disability equality work so there's no way and contextualising of this sort of thing can ever make it OK for me. The book felt Sherlockian enough without it so could easily leave this sort of ableist bs in the past. Rant over, sorry. 2y

🤨 Not my favorite. It started slow, the middle was better, and I thought the end was really not good. And not just because of the twist. I just felt myself rolling my eyes the last several chapters. I‘m glad I listened to this rather than having read it. If I had read it I‘d have been pretty peeved. I really liked The House of Silk, but this one . . . Not so much.

But others seemed to love it, so what do I know?

I read most, if not all, of Sherlock Holmes as a kid. Just after Moriarty & Holmes go missing over Reichenbach Falls. A Scotland Yard detective and a Pinkerton agent meet up and try to stop the man trying to take over Moriarty's crime empire.

I didn't realize this was the second in a series, but the marketing blurb on the cover said it was authorized by Doyle's estate, so I had to pick it up.

Buechersuechtling You know, in my library they do have a book series (“The Power of Five”) by Anthony Horowitz and I am constantly creeping round it because I don‘t know the author. Can you give a hint if it‘s worth a try in your opinion❓ 4y
RamsFan1963 @Buechersuechtling I'm embarrassed to say I own three Horowitz books, Magpie Murders, The House of Silk and Moriarty, and I've yet to read any of them. So I can't really say if "The Power of Five" is worth reading. 4y

Book 5 for #ReadYourSign
🦂 Black on cover
🦂 Published on Oct. 23
🦂 Outstanding book

I‘m a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes and found this book an excellent continuation. I definitely fell for the deceptions and wasn‘t quite expecting the final turn in the narrative. The explanation left me feeling like I often do after reading Conan Doyle‘s stories: humbled but excited to see the mystery unravelled. Highly recommend for Sherlockians! 9/10

I can't say the same for poor Holmes and Moriarty, in the blood red Reichenbach illustration underneath the dust jacket. Or can I?? #happyMonday

I liked the concept more than the execution. The writing didn‘t draw you in. It was obvious it was building up to a dramatic ending but it took forever to get there and once it dead I felt like even that was clumsy, heavy handed, and way too long. It was vaguely entertaining.

I rated this #audiobook “so-so” because I found after a while that I didn‘t really care how it turned out. Though the text was well-crafted and even a bit old-fashioned to match the Conan Doyle stories, I didn‘t feel drawn in to the story. I kept listening because I‘d read in other reviews that the ending was exciting. And yes, there was certainly a powerful twist at the end. The author did indeed take me by surprise!

Not my cup of tea. I‘m not a big fan of retellings or reimagining with classic characters. And this book is no exception. This book didn‘t even remotely live up to the original. It‘s simply too hard to do better than Sir Conan Doyle‘s Sherlock Holmes.

I‘m making this a pick and I did give it 4 stars on Goodreads but, honestly, it‘s really more of an in-between sort of book. I had a hard time getting into it and the last quarter was the best part. It lined up nicely with The Final Problem. It has a nice little twist, even though one bit made me sad. #Sherlocked, but by Moriarty this time.

Better than The House of Silk (which was very good) - I felt uneasy the entire time I was reading. Horowitz does a brilliant job of creating a sense of menace, while at the same time never establishing exactly where it is coming from. The best Sherlock Holmes pastiche I have read in a long time.
