"A full-throttle thriller in the tradition of classic Stieg Larsson, drenched in atmosphere and charged with adrenaline. Buckle up. You'll gulp down every word. I loved this book."--A. J. Finn, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Woman in the WindowThe heart-pounding debut from the creator of the hit Scandinavian television show The Killing. If you find one, he's already found you. A psychopath is terrorizing Copenhagen. His calling card is a "chestnut man"--a handmade doll made of matchsticks and two chestnuts--which he leaves at each bloody crime scene.Examining the dolls, forensics makes a shocking discovery--a fingerprint belonging to a young girl, a government minister's daughter who had been kidnapped and murdered a year ago.A tragic coincidence--or something more twisted? To save innocent lives, a pair of detectives must put aside their differences to piece together the Chestnut Man's gruesome clues.Because it's clear that the madman is on a mission that is far from over. And no one is safe.

I had such high expectations for this book and feel kind of let down. It was very slow moving for me, a few things I didnt see coming that kept me going but overall middle of the road.

There aren't enough stars in the world to capture my love for this book. IT IS AMAZING.

One of the best police procedural/serial killer chasing books I've read in my life.

I tried to get into this book after getting home from work early with a stomach bug, but I'm just not feeling it. Maybe the grotesque imagery in the opening chapter is too much when I already feel nauseated, but the subsequent chapters have been boring, too.

Finally finished! Not exactly what I expected but it wasn‘t a bad read. I felt like it was maybe 100 pages too long but it didn‘t feel like ruined the book. I‘d give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ 3.5 👍

This was a solid crime thriller. The twists were good and the story kept me invested. Some of the pacing didn‘t work for me with some sections dragging while others sped through at lightning speed, but overall this is a solid read. Especially for fans of the genre.

Was most disappointed in the Tremblay story collection as he‘s usually a hit for me. #scarathlon #teamStoker 1 point.

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I thought this was a pretty good book. The story kept my attention and it was well written. There were no major twists or confusing plot lines so don‘t expect any. I liked the characters and while it wasn‘t a super shock, I think the killers identity was a surprise. I would recommend this book and most likely read other works by the author, as I haven‘t yet.

I‘m still fairly new to the mystery/thriller genre, but this book was a really good read. As one of my September #BOTM picks, it made a great Halloween read and is definitely not for younger readers.

🚨Triggers include but not limited to: body mutilation, pedophilia, rape, suicide, graphic violence and murder, child abuse, domestic abuse, torture

If you have any book recommendations similar to this one, let me know!

TrishB Have you read? I haven‘t liked most of the Scandinavian noir stuff! As a sub genre I just can‘t seem to get into it. 2mo
MicheleinPhilly @TrishB I have not. I have it though. Sort of wish I would have waited and bought it cheaply. I‘ve liked some of it but not all of it. It‘s not like British thrillers for me but I do like Larsson and Mankell. 2mo
TrishB I enjoyed Larsson but haven‘t really enjoyed any others and figured it probably wasn‘t for me. 2mo

Bk4 of my #Scareathlon is done! This was more hit than miss for me, it has its shaky moments & a few cliches, but it is a debut by an author to whom English is his second language, so I can forgive a few clunky moments. The killer and the ending more than made up for it‘s shortcomings, he was nuts & there were shudders. Can‘t wait to see what he writes next. #TeamSlaughter 3points #PointsTotal-39

Over halfway through this chunkster, though is it considered a chunkster at 500pges? It‘s interesting, though it does have its flaws. The writing can seem a bit clunky, but that might be because English is not the authors first language, but sometimes the characters seem a little cliche, I mean one of the cops names is Martin Ricks! Overall though, the killings are gruesome & the killer creepy. #Scareathlon #TeamSlaughter 1point #PointsTotal-26

Up next on my #Scareathlon playlist is a Scandicrime novel by the writer of the Danish version of The Killing. In a park on an October morning in Copenhagen, a girls body is found brutally murdered in a playground. She has one hand missing & above her hangs a small doll made from chestnuts. That begins a chase between two out of favour detectives & a psychotic killer. #TeamSlaughter 1 point #PointsTotal-25

Sveistrup is the creator of Danish series Forbrydelsen (The Crime), the basis for one of my favorite AMC/Netflix rescued series of all time, The Killing. #LindenandHolder While The Chestnut Man is much darker than The Killing, I found many points of similarity. Bureaucratic infighting, seemingly mismatched detectives (the best kind!), moody urban setting, political ambitions. This is one of the most ambitious thrillers I've read this year, &👇
