Gambler's Anatomy
Gambler's Anatomy | Jonathan Lethem
The author of "Motherless Brooklyn" and "The Fortress of Solitude" returns with a devilishly entertaining novel about an international backgammon hustler who thinks he's psychic. Too bad about the tumor in his face. Handsome, impeccably tuxedoed Bruno Alexander travels the world winning large sums of money from amateur "whales" who think they can challenge his peerless acumen at backgammon. Fronted by his pasty, vampiric manager, Edgar Falk, Bruno arrives in Berlin after a troubling run of bad luck in Singapore. Perhaps it was the chance encounter with his crass childhood acquaintance Keith Stolarsky and his smoldering girlfriend Tira Harpaz. Or perhaps it was the emergence of a blot that distorts his vision so he has to look at the board sideways. Things don't go much better in Berlin. Bruno's flirtation with Madchen, the striking blonde he meets on the ferry, is inconclusive; the game at the unsettling Herr Kohler's mansion goes awry as his blot grows worse; he passes out and is sent to the local hospital, where he is given an extremely depressing diagnosis. Having run through Falk's money, Bruno turns to Stolarsky, who, for reasons of his own, agrees to fly Bruno to Berkeley, and to pay for the experimental surgery that might save his life. Berkeley, where Bruno discovered his psychic abilities, and to which he vowed never to return. Amidst the patchouli flashbacks and Anarchist gambits of the local scene, between Tira's come-ons and Keith's machinations, Bruno confronts two existential questions: Is the gambler being played by life? And what if you're telepathic but it doesn't do you any good?"

Quite an uplifting, different kind of novel. Thought I was getting a dissolute man kind of thing, but this was much more as it avoided being predictable or too saccharine. Some great characters, particularly like the German woman he befriends, his crazy self obsessed doctor and his anarchist boss. Funny in parts too.

Tonight I finally got to hear Jonathan Lethem read (seen here making fun of his author photo on the back of As She Climbed Across the Table) and it was AMAZING. Hard to believe I've been reading his books for twenty years. ❤️

MrBook Wow! 😳😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 7y
Billypar Do you have a favorite Lethem? I think mine is still Motherless Brooklyn. 7y

Billypar Ooh, still haven't read it... I'll have to make it my next of his. 7y
peaKnit I did not even connect Motherless Brooklyn to the Anatomy of a Gambler, it's been on my TBR forever, just moved up the list 😊 7y
elkeOriginal Oh, I love his earlier sci fi-ish stuff SO much!! 7y
librarypoweruser So envious. He's my favorite author. I think I'm the only person that adores Chronic City but it's tattoo worthy for me. 7y
Booksndogs Chronic City is one of my favorite Lethem's too! 7y
vivastory @elkeo Have you read his book "Amnesiac Moon"? It's a sequel of sorts to Phillip K. Dick's brilliant "Dr. Bloodmoney." 7y
elkeOriginal @vivastory Yes! Those were the books of his I loved around that same period and very odd/sci fi. I can't read his current stuff because his previous style was way more to my liking. 7y

Trying to explain what happens in this book would be nearly impossible, so I'll just say this: it's James Bond meets Kafka meets Kurt Vonnegut. Like all of Lethem's others it's often clever, occasionally impenetrable, and always utterly weird. Anybody who likes their fiction with a dark sense of humor and an absurdist philosophical twist will likely get great enjoyment out of this one; I certainly did. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I didn't get the point of this story. It was my final read of 2016 & I probably should have bailed but I just wanted to eek out one more book for the year. For at least the 2nd half of the book I just keep thinking, "Why?"

8little_paws I tried reading Jonathan Lethem once and I couldn't get past 100 pages. Hated how he wrote female characters. 7y
britt_brooke Uh oh. I chose this for BOTM, but keep putting it off. 7y
Theresa @britt_brooke There are some "pick" reviews for it, so it's not horrible. It just wasn't my cup of tea. 7y

Huh? What did I just read? An international backgammon sensation travels the world & develops a blot behind one of his eyes that turns out to be a tumor. So he undergoes face replacement surgery? I don't understand the point of this book. The characters were flat, the writing mediocre, the plot contrived without a foreseeable deeper meaning, & the female characters were all props. 🙄 it was ok I guess, but confusing. Mediocre white dude book. 🃏

SoniaC Oh no that was my BOTM pick. 7y
BookishFeminist @SoniaC Oh no! Maybe you'll enjoy it more than me. If you figure out what it's about, let me know! Lol 7y
SoniaC @BookishFeminist I've noticed our book taste runs pretty similar so I'm a little concerned. Guess it doesn't make the top of the TBR. 7y

jpmcwisemorgan That makes absolutely no sense to me. Good to know that I should probably not read this one. 7y
B.Reader That's too bad. Lethe is usually pretty solid. I was waffling on getting this one but I think I will pass now. 7y
Donna_sBookMinute I appreciate honest reviews like this one. Yes, give us the real deal. 7y
BookishFeminist @Donna_sBookMinute Thanks! I don't like to discuss books I don't like bc it's usually just my personal taste, but this one just felt really off the mark to me. 7y
BookishFeminist @jpmcwisemorgan Makes absolutely no sense to me either- I sat there confused most of the time. I prolly wouldn't have read it but after halfway in I couldn't give up. Plus, the cover snagged me! 7y
BookishFeminist @B.Reader This is my first Lethem and I'm interested in trying other stuff of his. This one seems to be getting pretty mixed reviews. Most of the good reviews I've seen have been by dudes though, and that says something to me. What Lethem book would you recommend I try?? (edited) 7y
britt_brooke Oh oh. I chose this last month from BOTM but haven't read it yet. 7y
Donna_sBookMinute I understand so well. I think I've finally come up with a tactful way to express my displeasure about certain aspects of a recent read. 7y
B.Reader @BookishFeminist I loved Motherless Brooklyn and I thought Gun, With Occasional Music was really quirky and interesting. I would recommend both! 7y
cariashley Aw man. I thought Fortress of Solitude was just ok; I never had any interest in picking up another Lethem though, and this further confirms it for me. 7y
Marchpane I also like to see honest reviews - good, bad and meh, they're all interesting! 7y
MicheleinPhilly I loved Motherless Brooklyn and The Fortress of Solitude and absolutely LOATHED Chronic City. So he's definitely a hit or miss writer for me. 7y

Guess what Jonathan Lethem's latest novel is titled in the U.K. and Australia! (I found that really interesting -- wonder why they changed it.) #AsSeenOnNetGalley

Lindy I prefer The Blot and I also find the UK cover design more appealing than the US one. 7y
Marchpane Somewhat confusingly, there is also this separate and distinct book: 7y
BookishMarginalia @Marchpane I'm so confused! That entry identifies Blot as a companion volume... 7y
Marchpane @BookishMarginalia Right? But I think you are also correct that Gambler's Anatomy was published as The Blot in the UK. And I've seen both versions for sale In Australia. Argh! 7y

"Just when I think you couldn't be any dumber....you go and totally redeem yourself" that is how I felt about this book, it was well written and sometimes the word usage was a little much but it kept me interested.
