Blowout
Blowout: Corrupted Democracy, Rogue State Russia, and the Richest, Most Destructive Industry on Earth | Rachel Maddow
Big Oil and Gas Versus DemocracyWinner Take All Rachel Maddows Blowout offers a dark, serpentine, riveting tour of the unimaginably lucrative and corrupt oil-and-gas industry. With her trademark black humor, Maddow takes us on a switchback journey around the globefrom Oklahoma City to Siberia to Equatorial Guineaexposing the greed and incompetence of Big Oil and Gas. She shows how Russias rich reserves of crude have, paradoxically, stunted its growth, forcing Putin to maintain his power by spreading Russia's rot into its rivals, its neighbors, the United States, and the Wests most important alliances. Chevron, BP, and a host of other industry players get their star turn, but ExxonMobil and the deceptively well-behaved Rex Tillerson emerge as two of the past century's most consequential corporate villains. The oil-and-gas industry has weakened democracies in developed and developing countries, fouled oceans and rivers, and propped up authoritarian thieves and killers. But being outraged at it is, according to Maddow, like being indignant when a lion takes down and eats a gazelle. You can't really blame the lion. It's in her nature. This book is a clarion call to contain the lion: to stop subsidizing the wealthiest industry on earth, to fight for transparency, and to check the influence of predatory oil executives and their enablers. The stakes have never been higher. As Maddow writes, Democracy either wins this one or disappears.

Maddows is connecting the dots on how the oil industry is shaping policies and how the constituents (and the environment) are being skewed over... all around the world.

Oh, Rachel Maddow, you are wonderful! The audiobook is the way to go on this one since Rachel narrates it with her endearingly witty trademark snark and includes a track from Pussy Riot. The book goes through some twists and turns before coming together to expose the depth of corruption in the oil and gas industry and the effect it has on the world. #nfnov

Full disclosure: I‘m a Rachel Maddow fan and am inclined to like anything she writes. This book contains a history of big oil and gas, the politicians that protect the industry, and how it impacts global politics.

Kickass lesbian political analyst Rachel Maddow untangles the far-flung tentacles of Big Oil in this very readable exposé of “Corrupted Democracy, Rogue State Russia, and the Richest, Most Destructive Industry on Earth.” Informative, depressing, shocking and infuriating, but—ultimately—hopeful. I highly recommend the #audiobook narrated by Maddow herself.

When well-armed separatists began taking over buildings in major cities in the Donbass, not many close observers believed the Kremlin‘s assertion that it was all homegrown revolutionaries at work. The townsfolk in Kharkiv, for instance, were pretty sure it was actually Russian soldiers who proclaimed the liberation of city hall, because local separatists would have known that what they actually seized was the city‘s main opera theatre.

The United States was beginning to look like it might be capable of overtaking Russia, become the world leader in oil production. All glory to the frackers… and all apologies to the cows… and the neighbors… and the future prospects for their drinking water.

(Littens, be grateful that I didn‘t use a photo of dead livestock to accompany this quote. There are many tragic fracking-related images on the internet.)

Just finished the audiobook. I normally prefer to read the book but this one has Rachel reading it, so.Rachel Maddow does what she does best, tells a story. In this case, the story of oil and its‘ impacts on the world.I knew it was bad but holy crap,it‘s worse then I realized.Between the politics and environment, oil/gas has screwed all of us. Definitely worth reading/listening to and for listening, you get a bonus Pussy Riot song at the end.

I never figured a book about the oil and gas industry would be so captivating. Written in a novelistic, yet journalistic style, Maddow lays out the relationships between oil and gas extractors like ExxonMobil and the countries where they drill. This is geopolitical stuff that we can‘t afford not to understand—it‘s affecting us and Earth. Give it a go, please!

Maddow has written a very interesting book and presents a convincing thesis: The Resource Curse isn‘t only an issue for local governments. It is a global problem that is driving climate change (obviously), spawning wars (Iraqi civil war, Russia vs Ukraine), and corrupting governments (Equatorial Guinea, the state of Oklahoma, Russia, and the US, e.g. Trump, to name a few). She manages to bring a number of threads together into a compelling read.

What the Frack is going on with the oil and gas industry? How did we, as a Democratic country, get to this point, how did we become dependent on a global industry built on corruption, greed and incompetence?
Rachel Maddow brings it all together and makes this complicated issue, easy to understand. we need to re-think the need vs. the greed of oil.
