Little holiday break. Taking advantage of the cooler weather and using my folks‘ hot tub. Not very many days it‘s cool enough in south Texas to get into a hot tub 😅 Rereading the tagged book via audio book.

This needed to be maybe half as long. The book follows Quinn and Alex. Quinn as she searches for answers regarding the disappearance of her roommate Esther. Alex‘s story with MPDG “Pearl” carries on for far too long. Quinn‘s story is better, but the romance subplot does not work.

Goals: knock out my current listen and read. The listen because it‘s so good I want to devour it, the read because it‘s lingered on too long, this was supposed to be my quick read 😩 1/2 way and not 1 clue what is happening in the tagged book. And make a solid dent in Fractured (goal to finish Monday)

💀 no clue what is happening in Kubica‘s or how the stories are connected.
👍🏼 McNamara‘s is very good so far. Gillian Flynn‘s foreword was very insightful “I love reading true crime, but I‘ve always been aware of the fact that, as a reader, I am actively choosing to be a consumer of someone else‘s tragedy.”

Thanks @DarkMina 🎃

So this is a combined review (mine was 4 stars, my husband was 1 star).

I had trouble getting into this one as there is a very slow build. In his words "there's nothing but descriptions for the first 250 pages then all the action in the last bit." ?

jessjess Even though it's a slow build with a semi-unsatisfactory ending it's still okay. 3y

My husband has informed me that "you have to read this. Like right now, today." ? Apparently he wants to discuss it and I'm going to encourage that (he doesn't read much at all).

Elizabeth2 Love that! I‘d do the same if my hubby or one of my kids brought me a book and said they wanted to discuss. Enjoy! 3y

I put my book down to go shower and come back to this. I've been informed that this is now "his" book to read ? and he's been updating me on his thoughts about it. He's not a reader, so I'll let it slide. (and note Perry's "go away Ma" face ?)

This was a good thriller but a slow burn. I had no idea how this story was going to end. I was really confused because I thought two different stories were being told. It was very interesting to see how everything tied together at the end.

What an underwhelming book. After flying through my other books I expected the same to happen with this one but I just didn‘t care. I didn‘t want to continue reading it because the story didn‘t grab me.

Told in two POV‘s, one is the roommate who is very self absorbed and worries if her coworker likes her. The ending was disappointing and I guessed the twist early on.

Meh. It was just ok. Predictable. Not sure I'd call it a "pick" but slightly more than a "so-so." Sort of a Single White Female meets Gone Girl story.

3rd of Kubica's books that I have read. Standalone thriller with interesting characters. Plot with twists and turns. The story gets off to a slow start with two separate narrators telling two separate stories. Piece by piece you begin to see how these stories can be related but you are kept guessing until the very end. I like books that surprise you and that's what her books are all about. Recommend to those who like psychological thrillers.

SexyCajun I‘ve been thinking of this book for awhile. This is a book that I read that I forgot the ending to!!!!! 🤷🏼‍♀️😱. I have no idea how or why I can‘t remember. Would you be willing to tell me the ending of you‘re able to sum it up quickly? 6y
EadieB @SexyCajun Quinn and Esther were roommates. Esther went missing. Alex in another area is shopping for Ingrid who is home bound. Alex lives with his drunken dad. Across the street is a house that is empty where a 5 year old Genevieve died and was buried. Ingrid really put G up for adoption Esther finds G but G puts Esther in a storage shed. Esther and Genevieve are sisters. G goes to Ingrid‘s house and stabs Alex and Quinn finds Esther in shed. 6y
SexyCajun @EadieB thank you for that! I listened to the audio version and I‘m thinking 💭 my mind may have drifted off somewhere especially if I was listening at work. What a twisted story huh? Lol (edited) 6y
EadieB @sexycajun I find all her stories are kind of twisted! 6y

I read this right after The Good Girl and I couldn‘t help comparing them. I felt Don‘t You Cry was a little slow and I kept getting a little bored in all the back stories/descriptions. I would definitely recommend The Good Girl over Don‘t You Cry.

abookishbutterfly Good to know. I just started The Good Girl and I am definitely liking it so far. I was thinking I‘d like to check out some of her other books but maybe I‘ll avoid this one. 6y

I think this is my favorite of Mary Kubica's novels (so far). I sympathized with Quinn's plight, loved how she puzzled everything out, and was rooting for her all along. Alex was a bit trickier, but he grew on me, too. I enjoyed the twists and turns this one took...a page-turner in the finest sense of the expression.

In downtown Chicago, a young woman named Esther Vaughan disappears from her apartment without a trace. A haunting letter addressed to My Dearest is found among her possessions, leaving her friend and roommate Quinn Collins to wonder where Esther is and whether or not she's the person Quinn thought she knew.
I read this one a couple of years ago and while not perfect it was a pick for me.

So this was ... okay. The resolution to the central mystery was interesting and not something I entirely saw coming, though a few aspects I did. And I liked the parallel structure for the most part. But the characters were all pretty flat. And oy, did this need better editing! I work as an editor (for a news site, not books) and I was literally rewriting or taking out like every third sentence. With tighter writing, could've been better. 3/5 ⭐️
