Alma Katsu handles the subgenre 'historical fiction with a supernatural twist' so well. This is a dual timeline story of voyages on the Titanic and the Britannic, its sister ship, when it was used as a hospital during WWI. I enjoyed the morally ambiguous characters, strange occurrences, and knowing that people are doomed but waiting to see exactly how it plays out.

I really wanted to love this book and just couldn‘t get into it but I think it‘s worth picking up because the idea is great even if it isn‘t perfectly executed.

For PandemoniumDay the sinking of the Titanic was a good example of complete pandemonium. Here‘s two novels that add extra layers of chaos to the historic event. Luck of the Titanic I read with #SundayBuddyRead & the tagged book is still in my TBR.

My second attempt to find something I like by the author. This was a big let down. Not enough horror. The authors commentary at the end was so over-the-top ridiculous I will never read another by her.

I really enjoy Alma Katsu‘s books. She takes things that have happened that are historical mysteries and gives them supernatural reasons for why they happened in fictional fairy tales pretty much. It‘s a unique concept and I really enjoy the supernatural elements.

One woman. Two ship wrecks.

This book...promises so much and after 224 pages of insufferable rich people and a twist that I totally called by page 100 and has nothing to do with the Titanic (I peeked ahead), I'm just done and bailing ship (ha). I do think some people will enjoy its unique concept but good lord was it boring and unlikable for me. Although I'm a bit bummed, there's too many other books calling me name to struggle on.

Finally finished this book. Only took about 6 months 🤔

I liked the take on the Titanic tragedy but found that this really dragged on and by the time I got to the end, it was a bit underwhelming. Not bad but I had higher expectations

My finished Hot & Sour Soup from a Jamie Oliver recipe. For some reason (maybe temperature) my egg didn‘t “ribbon” & instead cooked nicely into the soup a bit like avgolemono, but the flavor was spot-on so I don‘t care too much.🤷🏻‍♀️Lots of tofu, mushrooms & bamboo shoots & just the right amount of spicy & tangy for me, it hit the spot.🥣Recipe link below.

I‘m not exactly sure how I feel about this book. It‘s a little strange but also intriguing. Idk, it was good but weird.

I have wanted this book for so long and was lucky enough to receive it as a Christmas gift ❤️🎅🏻

This book was full of twists and turns and was incredibly atmospheric, it was really enjoyable. I am a complete and utter history dork so the titanic segments were particularly interesting to me!

The story was dark, mesmerising and really original, I‘ll keep an eye out for Alma Katsu‘s other novels!

Got my book, my blanket and my iced coffee all ready and I already told my wonderful family not to so much as look at me for the next several hours.

Christmas is for the family....Boxing Day is for the Momma!

It's about the Titanic and the Britannic sinkings, but reimagined as ghost stories. I do wish she had focused on a couple of characters because I felt like there were too many one dimensional ones whose stories didn't contribute to the plot. And she took one scene directly from the movie. For the most part, I really enjoyed it. I'd give it a 4 out of 5.

Time for the #OutstandingOctober Readathon hosted by @Andrew65 😁 I‘ve done abysmal at these in the past but here‘s hoping this time will be different 😅 My goal is to get through these 4 books at least. It was alright. I was hoping for another horror story like the hunger. It wasn‘t really a horror story, but it did make a good ghost story. Writing was still great. 4/5.

I‘m having a difficult time getting into this book, but lines like this make me want to stick it out.

The novel sweeps between 1912 and 1916, through the few days of the Titanic‘s voyage and the final days of the Britannic‘s life.

An excellent psychological thriller that will keep readers on the edge of their seats.

I love when a solid historical fiction story twists into something with fantasy or the supernatural. This one hits that genre on the nose. Katsu combines many story threads—which makes it pleasantly difficult to sort out the solution to the mystery. She waits until nearly the end and wallops you with the details. Just the way I like my stories!

The last book I read in July ? Really enjoyed it, The Deep is a suspenseful "#ghost" (and ?) story with various characters who are on the #Titanic. Our main is Annie Hebbley, one of the few people who survived and later finds herself on the #Britannic, the sister ship, during #worldwar1. Intriguing, disturbing in the #love dpt, and just WOW. Slow paced but kept me hooked, would have finished in one sitting if not for my job ? #historicalfiction

Slow day at work so started a new book!! It's "The Deep" by Alma Katsu, love the cover and some far it has a suspenseful vibe to it, also siren sea ghost?! Nice ?

It gets mixed reviews, but I need something fictional and fantastical from my #NetGalley shelf. Going in!

Started out really strong! Ultimately it's a wee bit long so it drags, bringing down the continued enjoyment of it.

🎧 This is a supernatural mystery that takes place mainly in 1912 & 1916 on the Titanic & Britannic. Loved the premise & had amazing potential. Are you sensing a “but”? You‘d be right if you were. I just didn‘t like the 3 main characters. I found a subplot with 2 pugilist con artists Infinitely more interesting ... 2nd BUT ... it does pick up, narrator‘s good, chapter titles were good & the last 1/3 of the story was suspenseful & telling! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

What Alma Katsu did with her fictional take on The Donner Party, she does again by doubling down on not just The Titanic, but also it's sister ship, The Britannic. A beautifully written spooky tale of tragic lost love wrapped in an inevitable shroud of doom.

This book was so, so good! Rich, atmospheric, just the right amount of spooky and a hint of Irish folklore. This would be a fantastic fall/winter read as I think cool weather would enhance all those factors! Fulfills the #ReadYourSign prompt for a book that heavily mentions my sign‘s element of water! ♋️

I really enjoyed this spooky tale of the Titanic and the Britannic. Annie Henley is a stewardess who survives the Titanic, and finds herself as a nurse on the Britannic (talk about bad luck!). When Annie sets foot on the Britannic, the memories of her previous fateful voyage come flooding back to her. There‘s an underlying menace, which frankly, would keep me off anything that floats for life! It doesn‘t end well 🤷🏼‍♀️ Recommended!

Not really a fan of this one. I love stories involving the Titanic but this one had a list of characters that I didn‘t care for. Sorry, this is rare for me.

Creepy ghost story that brings in both history of both the Titanic and the Brittanica- I really enjoyed this one! Creepy and well done! I enjoyed her previous book, The Hunger as well!

As with The Hunger, Alma Katsu takes a historic true event (here, the Titanic) and adds a paranormal-type twist, but with enough subtlety that it leaves you wondering. Overall, I found this book very engaging, but the twist really didn‘t work for me. After the twist was revealed, I felt there was too much explaining about how we got there. I think Katsu is a good writer and I‘m interested to see what she does next.

By golly, I think I‘m going to finally get my NetGalley backlog cleared up!

Paranormal-ish historical fiction with a dual time line of Titanic 1912 and Brittanic (WW1 hospital ship) 1916. The MC‘s friend Violet Jessop was a real person who survived both shipwrecks and lived until 1971.

A slow burn story about a woman who survives the sinking of Titanic and eventually returns to service on Britannic. Things aren't what they seem as her sanity has been questioned, as has her obsession with a first class passenger from Titanic. This went from a so-so to a pick for me because of how damn insane it made me feel. Honestly, for the last third of the book it felt like I was the one going crazy. Props to the author for getting into my head so much.

I love things about the titanic, so this book was quite high on my radar when I found out about it. Add in spooky stuff and it was an automatic buy for me.

Every character was awful which made it hard to get into but intriguing.

One of my husband's favorite things is to tell people who come over how we have books all over the place. 😂

Now I am by no means an expert on the horror genre but I would never consider this to be a horror so I can see why the book pitched as “titanic horror story“ isn't getting rave reviews. I like all the switching back and fourth between times and boats. I was still left with questions but I got a good idea of all the characters and why they did what they did. I liked it as a paranormal leaning historical fiction.

A well researched, paranormal take on the sinking of both the Titanic and it's sister ship, the Britannic. Told in alternating timelines from the years the ships sunk in 1912 and 1916, narrator Annie Hebbley is able to give readers a good feel for what life was like on both ships. The characters felt pretty real, and most of them actually were, which added an additional education piece to this otherwise creepy, fictional story.
