I Let You Go
I Let You Go | Clare Mackintosh
The next blockbuster thriller for those who loved The Girl on the Train and Gone Girl...a novel with "an astonishing intensity that drags you in and nevereverlets you go." (Daily Mail, UK) On a rainy afternoon, a mother's life is shattered as her son slips from her grip and runs into the street . . . I Let You Go follows Jenna Gray as she moves to a ramshackle cottage on the remote Welsh coast, trying to escape the memory of the car accident that plays again and again in her mind and desperate to heal from the loss of her child and the rest of her painful past. At the same time, the novel tracks the pair of Bristol police investigators trying to get to the bottom of this hit-and-run. As they chase down one hopeless lead after another, they find themselves as drawn to each other as they are to the frustrating, twist-filled case before them. Elizabeth Haynes, author of Into the Darkest Corner, says, I read I Let You Go in two sittings; it made me cry (at least twice), made me gasp out loud (once), and above all made me wish I'd written it . . . a stellar achievement. *Peter James, author of Want You Dead

#litsylearn @Alora
1)a- I've dyed my hair every color except black and green
b- I have a vocal range from 1st Soprano all the way to tenor
c- When speaking to people with accents I (unintentionally) mimic it back after a few minutes
2) Catcher in the Rye. Seriously thought my English teacher hated me with how slowly we worked through it, and I just hated it so bad.
3)Yes! Jenny Lawson & Grace Helbig
4)Probs too cold, you can always layer

Alora Thank you for playing!! 💙💙 is the lie that you unintentionally mimic peoples accents?! Lol 2mo
AprilMae @Alora no its the vocal range. I have the high notes (definitely a 1st Soprano) but I bottom out in the alto range! I've actually been told I collect accents lol 2mo

This psychological-thriller kicks off with a rain-soaked road accident that sets the book‘s events into motion.

This is one of my favorites from this genre (a genre that I have a real feeling of ennui with at the mo!) The characters are well-developed, it has a really tense ominous feeling throughout, and a good couple of twists.

Cinfhen This was such a fantastic book!!!!! The author never really recaptured the magic with her follow up novels 😬 6mo
KarenUK @cinfhen totally agree! Though I did just pick up a novel by her (not a thriller) that looks pretty good 6mo

This book will make you angry, broke your heart and make you angry again. The ending was nothing like the first few pages of the book. I felt like I was reading a different story but it all made sense after part 1.

This book was a rollercoaster of a read and one I highly recommend.

Trigger warning for rape and abuse.

My pic is terrible but I love this quote in the middle of her story-“I have been brave: I may have run away, but I came back.” And isn‘t that something we can all do to be brave? We don‘t all start out brave, but coming back..that‘s what makes a difference.

When the weather finally cools off I find myself in the mood for darker reads. I followed a recommendation from a recent podcast guest to try this author and I'm glad I did! Set in Wales with varying points of view, half of which are the police, and since the author is a former cop, it adds some authenticity. Trigger warnings for everything, I mean this is a crime novel and psychological thriller, what do you expect.

Reviewsbylola This is one of my favorite thrillers in recent memory. So well done. 1y
ReadingEnvy @Reviewsbylola some of it really surprised me... It is hard to talk about it without revealing pieces that are better left discovered 1y

This was....ugh...I mean it was alright but I can't get past the whiplash. There were a couple twists and the first big one makes sense and is pretty good but the other twists are predictable and the last one seems just plain ridiculous. So this book wasnt bad but it wasnt super good either.

klbwriting @JenIsAlwaysReading its just slow, started out with a tragedy and then came to a screeching halt on anything else happening. I heard it picks up in part 2 but that's after 150 pages of nothing....so not sure how I feel about that 1y

"I Let You Go" seemed a promising read when I picked it up but this really wasn't for me. While it started well I started to lose interest somewhere in the middle and didn't care for any of the characters or what happened to them. I like thrillers to grip me throughout and keep me on my toes, but this one sadly couldn't, therefore it's 2 stars from me.

My full review is up on my blog as usual. Head over there using the link on my profile ?

riversong153 I started this and couldn‘t finish. Who did it? Could you label it a spoiler? It didn‘t keep my attention. 1y
whatrebeccasread @riversong153 I‘m not sure how far you got, but in summary.... the main lady Jenna, isn‘t actually the boy‘s mum, she was in the car that hit him. The police eventually suss her out, come get her and she enters a guilty plea but it is later revealed that she has been in an abusive marriage and was concealing the truth - her husband did it. It all ends in a struggle and he falls over the edge of a cliff near her beach and dies 🙄 1y
riversong153 @whatrebeccasread wow. I literally only read the first 2 chapters. It was just moving too slow for me. With that kind of a twist it‘s a shame it wasn‘t more fast paced. 1y

2nd Mackintosh and I think I ? her! This #audiobook is great! The two narrators really add to the changing POVs. Twists you maybe see coming and others you definitely don't make this feel "new." However, hard TW for abuse, rape, violence to children and animals. Parts of the 2nd half is not for the faint of heart.
Clearly Mackintosh's background has been a boon to her understanding her characters' psychologies.

Part one of this book was fast paced and compelling. Part two was....... repulsive. I hated it and couldn‘t wait for it to be over but I was so far in that I felt I had to find out what happens. Clare Mackintosh writes unlikeable characters very well so I‘m giving it a so-so but honestly if I had known where this was going I wouldn‘t have picked it up in the first place. Another #unpopularopinion. I think that‘s the theme to my reading year!

Hit and run accident leaves a little boy dead and a mother devastated. A hunt is on for the driver. Jenna leaves the area as she is tortured by the memory of the accident. A big twist in the middle of the book turns things around and the reader becomes riveted to the story. Be forewarned there is violence and abuse is story which makes it hard to read at times. The end may leave you speechless! Recommended for those who like mystery thrillers!
