The Two-Family House
The Two-Family House: A Novel | Lynda Cohen Loigman
Brooklyn, 1947: in the midst of a blizzard, in a two-family brownstone, two babies are born minutes apart to two women. They are sisters by marriage with an impenetrable bond forged before and during that dramatic night; but as the years progress, small cracks start to appear and their once deep friendship begins to unravel. No one knows why, and no one can stop it. One misguided choice; one moment of tragedy. Heartbreak wars with happiness and almost but not quite wins. From debut novelist Lynda Cohen Loigman comes The Two-Family House, a moving family saga filled with heart, emotion, longing, love, and mystery."Two families, both living in one house, drive an exquisitely written novel of love, alliances, the messiness of life and long buried secrets. Loigman's debut is just shatteringly wonderful and I can't wait to see what she does next." - Caroline Leavitt, New York Times bestselling author of Is This Tomorrow and Pictures of You"No good deed goes unpunished. In a single, intensely charged moment, two women come to a private agreement meant to assure each other's happiness. But as Lynda Cohen Loigman deftly reveals, life is not so simple, especially when it involves two families, tightly intertwined. The Two-Family House is sympathetically observed and surely plotted all the way through to its deeply satisfying conclusion." - Christina Schwarz, author of Drowning Ruth (an Oprah's Book Club pick) and national bestseller The Edge of the Earth

Helen and Rose are very different women married to equally opposite brothers. They share a 2-family house, as was often the case years ago. They wind up sharing far more than their residence. This was an enjoyable, heartbreaking story about two families spanning a few generations. Rose was a hard character to like, but a lot happens to both women that changes them. The twist wasn‘t hard to predict, but its execution was believable and realistic.

Have I ever said before that I just LOVE family dramas! This was good on so many levels. Mort started out being my least-favorite character and I grew to appreciate and even enjoy him. I love when an author can make me change my mind about a character. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I loved this book! It had everything that I enjoy family dynamics, secrets, drama & love. It starts in 1947 and ends in 1970. The chapters are short and alternate from different character perspectives, which I loved! As the years progressed and the children grew up, we were also able to read from their perspective within the story. The story although heart wrenching at times was a beautiful story about the power of love and family.

Anyone read this one? Found it in a pile of books I was going through. Haven‘t read it myself but it looks pretty good! It‘s about two babies who are born in this house minutes apart from each other. Over time they become close friends but then cracks start to creep in and their friendship gets pulled apart in tragic way. It has a pretty high rating in Goodreads, 3.93.

TheBookWasBetter1983 It‘s an interesting read... but I found it slightly predictable. 6y

I could not stop reading this once I picked it up. Watching these families deal with the aftermath of an impulsive decision that only two of group even knew about was painful yet compelling. I liked most of the characters, even Mort- though he made it difficult! The multiple POVs worked very well. Will watch for her next book.

#NovemberByTheNumbers It‘s a fairly obvious setup of what‘s to happen to this family, but what I really enjoyed was how the family reacts and grows from the situation.
Helen and Rose are sister in laws, married to brothers Abe & Mort Berman. The couples reside in a two story family home in Brooklyn; Helen & Abe with their 3 sons live on the top floor, Mort & Rose below, with 3 daughters. On a snowy night their lives are altered.

It seems appropriate that I would read this book now. My sons just bought the house that I have an apartment in. They will rent out the bottom half of the house for a few years. Eventually they'll settle in themselves. My daughter and her family live 4 houses away. We're taking over this tiny town! 😂😂

I read this book twice. Once on my own and again when it was chosen for my book club. I liked it both times. You kind of know what is going to happen from the beginning but you keep reading because it was good and you want to know how it affects the 2 families. It was a very fast read. I would recommend it for both an individual as well as a book club book.

The story takes place in Brooklyn, in 1947. Friends by proximity, sisters by marriage, two women of the same family give birth on the same day, within a few minutes of one another -at home-during a blizzard. The only two people present- a harrowingly brave midwife and daughter of one mom. Two healthy babies are born, for anyone else, a cause for celebration except on this particular day, the worlds of these two women collided and changed forever.

Interesting tale of a family breakdown, but doesn‘t really start clicking until the end. The characters are mostly unlikable. I would definitely read another book written by the author as the writing was good. I just couldn‘t connect with the characters, and that makes enjoying a book difficult. However, it was truly an excellent discussion book. It was one of the liveliest discussions my group has had!
