November has not been a good month for me in many ways, including my reading. I only read Nancy Drew in week 2, and it was barely tolerable. In week 3, only a short story from Sherlock Holmes. Hoping for a better month in December.

Librarybelle It was an odd statement about killing versus murdering someone—based on the intent. I‘ve never thought of it that way…another thing to ponder. It seemed odd to me that Holmes let the inspector arrest the wrong man, only later to tell the inspector it was wrong. But, Holmes said a couple of times he did not have all of the facts of the case. Still seems strange that he appeared to be in agreement initially. 1mo

CogsOfEncouragement Hmmm, it was self defense, right? It was definitely more force than necessary, but maybe if one gets so comfortable using a harpoon maybe one loses sight of how dramatic it is to use it on a man with murder in his eyes?

I felt SH knew in that moment he couldn't convince Hopkins that it wasn't Neligan, he needed to gather the convincing evidence for Hopkins to see his mistake. Neligan was not in comfort, but would be okay for another day or so. 1mo

dabbe I also think Holmes was ticked off at Neligan for not telling the entire truth, which could be why he let him go to jail for a bit. I also don't know if I take Hopkins word that it was self-defense; he could just as easily been the first to grab the harpoon and then have Carey pull the knife after. We'll never know totally because Carey is dead. Perhaps kill means just to end a life, while murder implies absolute intent. 1mo

CogsOfEncouragement @dabbe Interesting point that maybe SH was annoyed with Neligan. Let him learn to not provide partial info that doesn‘t add up to the clues left at the scene. 1mo

dabbe @CogsOfEncouragement I think SH in the past has even let the bad guy go (if he wasn't a murderer) as long as he was honest with his story. I swear, if Sherlock asked me to tell the story and leave nothing out, I'd sit up straighter in my chair and say, “Yes, sir!“ 😂 1mo

Librarybelle This ties into my response to the last question…the rich can pay for silence, while those with less are left to pay for the crime. It‘s not right, yet we‘ve seen Holmes make some questionable choices over justice in prior stories. 2mo

dabbe I know Holmes has accepted awards in the past for his services (especially by the upper-class society), but it really bugs me that he knowingly takes a BRIBE here. An extra $6000 for silence. This act falls in with the idea that our heroes aren't always perfect, but when I've read this in the past, it never really struck me that that is what he's doing. The other times didn't seem so blatant. Maybe he does really need the money. 2mo

AnishaInkspill I'm not sure the extra is a bribe or if Holmes felt he earnt it for what he pieced together. I am also wondering if he thought this was a more sensitive way to handle this complex case then embarrass the duke ??? 2mo

dabbe @AnishaInkspill I love that you're giving good ol' SH the benefit of the doubt. I'm wondering if he'd do the same thing for no money for someone less noble than the duke. 2mo

AnishaInkspill @dabbe now that's an interesting question. Just based on this story, I'm left with the impression that he doesn't work for free, it ends with himself as a poor man.

Would SH do the same for someone less noble? I think there's a possibility if he doesn't care for titles and class but I haven't read enough of these to know for sure.. 2mo

Librarybelle What struck me the most was Holmes‘ discussion with the Duke about which son he is protecting—the young one, who I‘m sure will have trauma forever, or his older son that he feels he must protect at all costs. Not necessarily a class issue, but the Duke uses his money to buy silence and protect his eldest son. The wealthy can pay hush money, while those who also participated (Hayes) from another class are left to pay for the crime. 2mo

Cuilin The fact is if there wasn‘t such a strict adherence to society‘s laws and expectations, the eldest son would be the heir. It begs the question whether James was inherently reprobate or was his behavior born through the lack of recognition? 2mo

dabbe @Cuilin Good point. The duke was totally in love with his mother, so perhaps she was a lovely lady. The being left out of the inheritance might be what drove Wilder to act so heinously. 2mo

dabbe @Librarybelle I also can't recall how many times Watson reiterated that the duke wanted to protect the family name at all costs. Even leaving the younger heir--whom he supposedly adored--to suffer in that tavern for three days shows that the #1 love in the duke's life is his family name and not the actual people who carry said name. 2mo

Librarybelle The part that me on edge in relation to geography was when Holmes and Watson were following the bike trail. The hills, the ground, the twists and turns, and then the evidence leading to the gruesome discovery. The landscape played a good role in that for me. 2mo

Cuilin I love a mystery involving a map and all the deductions that go with it. 2mo

dabbe For me, the remote countryside setting amplifies the sense of isolation and urgency. It reminded me of the time when SH told Watson that crimes committed in the country were the worst of all. The Priory School's secluded location heightens the difficulty of the search and adds a layer of suspense. The rugged terrain, including the moors and cliffs, is not only a physical obstacle but also symbolizes the danger and complexity of the mystery. (edited) 2mo

eeclayton I enjoyed it, there were quite a few twists, and I loved SH's humour at the end about the 2nd most interesting thing 😁 2mo

AnishaInkspill I very quickly skimmed through this story and really liked what I've read. I have the complete Sherlock Holmes on my tbr and haven't got around to reading it. 2mo

Librarybelle I liked this one. It read quickly, and I was surprised by some of the reveals. The poor German teacher! 2mo

Very similar to his Memoirs except for the first story but I won‘t spoil the surprise. My favorite amongst the 13 tales was The Second Stain. A high profile case that could have led to A World War or scandal had it not been for the inquisitive Holmes and his ever curious side-kick Watson. An enjoyable read. Highly recommended for a bus ride to work as you could easily get through one tale in a half hours time.

The great thing about Doyle, is that because we're used to the way Sherlock Holmes speaks, there's very little dialogue that's misunderstood

It's been a while, but I got back into reading through Sherlock. My only complaint about this collection of short stories is how abruptly each of them ends. But, since they were probably published as serials in a magazine or a newspaper, there was probably a word count range. ⭐⭐⭐✨/⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
