The atmosphere on board the inaugural non-stop flight from London to Sydney is electric. Numerous celebrities are rumoured to be among the passengers in business class and journalists will be waiting on the ground to greet the plane.
Mina is one of a hand-picked team of flight attendants chosen for the landmark journey. She's trying to focus on the task in hand, and not worry about her troubled five-year-old daughter back at home with her husband. Or the cataclysmic problems in her marriage.
But the plane has barely taken off when Mina receives a chilling note from an anonymous passenger, someone intent on ensuring the plane never reaches its destination. Someone who needs Mina's assistance and who knows exactly how to make her comply.
It's twenty hours to landing.
A lot can happen in twenty hours . . .
A contemporary twist on the claustrophobic, locked-room setting of classic Agatha Christie novels, with the heart-stopping emotional intensity of ROOM - this is the explosive new thriller from number one Sunday Times bestselling author, Clare Mackintosh.

First half of the book (the set up I guess you'd call it) 👎🌟 the second half (maybe that's not fair the last 1/8th and this is a generous rating🌟🌟🌟). I get what the author was trying to do...but honestly I got to the point I didn't care. Crash the plane...don't crash the plane...big Mina reveal...bah!

Hmm 🤨 I finished it, but don‘t agree with the “nail-biter” or “blockbuster movie” blurbs. I‘ll admit the twist at the end was unexpected and a bit of a shock, which redeemed it somewhat, but still just a so-so 🤷‍♀️

⭐️⭐️⭐️ So this starts off sooo well! Super intriguing and great detail of characters and scenarios. Loved that we got different perspectives from different passengers on the plane. But the reason for the hostage situation just totally fell flat to me. The reason did not justify such high stakes. I recommend this one for the thriller writing but just be prepared that the reasoning is a little weak.

Clare Mackintosh never disappoints! Just what a good thriller should be - gripping and claustrophobia inducing with plenty of twists and turns.

I was hooked until the very end and raced through the last few chapters. Just when I thought I had it figured out, another shock was thrown in! 5*

I really enjoyed this gripping thriller set on a non stop flight to Sydney from London. Mina has some hard choices to make as she is one of the flight attendants and back in London, her husband Adam is keeping secrets from her. Not one to read on a flight!

Although I don‘t have any specific books that I need to read for this weekends #20in4, here are some that are currently on my radar.

Have you read any of these? Any thoughts or suggestions?

KristiAhlers Oh I LOVED the One Night with Audrey Hepburn. In fact the whole series is super cute! 2y
Andrew65 Not read any, but plenty I‘d like to read. 2y
Clwojick @KristiAhlers ❤️Good to know! I have the whole series saved, but AH is my favourite so I wanted to start with this one. 2y

Birdsong28 @KristiAhlers I second that. It is such a good series. 📚📖 2y
KristiAhlers @Clwojick she my favorite too. And I think that‘s actually the first one in the series followed by Marilyn and then Grace. 2y
PageShifter I have not read anything from this list but oh boy how intrigued they made me!! One of these has already been on my TBR pile but the rest is looking sooo inviting too! 👍 2y

Book 44

Hostage is an engaging suspense novel about a hostage airplane situation. The novel is compulsivly readable from beginning to end, with a sympathetic protagonist and layered storylines. I'll read more of Mackintosh's work. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I really enjoyed this one! It‘s been a while since I last read a thriller so it might have been a good idea to take a break from reading this genre 😅
The only negative thing about the book is the last few chapters… I understood the idea but it wasn‘t as well written as the rest of the book 😊

You always know you‘ll get a good yarn with a Clare Mackintosh and this was no exception. Well paced it was an interesting and slightly creepy story about the hijacking of an airlines first none stop London —> Sydney. Skip the super over the top ending and I really enjoyed.

LeeRHarry I‘m flying Melbourne to London direct soonish - may not be the best pick for me 😆 2y

Mina is a flight attendant working on the first ever nonstop flight from London to Sydney when she receives a note that says “The following instructions will save your daughter‘s life.” Although it requires a bit of suspension of belief, the ensuing ride is wild enough to keep the story interesting. The perspectives move from Mina to her police detective husband Adam to their adopted daughter Sophia to the various other passengers on the plane.

Not edge of your seat drama but intense in places and an interesting take on a topical subject. There were a couple of twists that I didn‘t see coming and the main characters were well developed. I would have liked to read more about the guided descent and landing as that is what the entire book was leading up to but it just wasn‘t there. All in all though it was an enjoyable read.

This book was good. If you‘re going to compare to Falling, both involve a hijacked plane with a flight attendant‘s family being held as collateral, this one was definitely better, however audio narration was HORRIBLE. I did switch to print for some of it, but I was too engrossed in the story to stop, so I went back to audio while I was busy doing chores. Parts were hard to believe & the hijacker‘s motives were a bit extreme but…👇🏽

Cinfhen there was at least one plot twist I absolutely did not see coming!!!! And that made this book a winner!!!! I definitely would recommend PRINT!!! Another book from @MallenNC #NYWD list and works for #PoP22 #SetOnPlaneTrainOrCruiseShip
2y
MallenNC I read this one in print so I didn‘t know about the narrator. I agree with your review. Didn‘t see the last twist coming at all. 2y
MallenNC Also I haven‘t read Falling but I‘m curious about it. I enjoy Clare MacIntosh so I knew hers would be good. 2y

Cinfhen The narrator did nothing to change her tone @MallenNC so it was difficult to know who‘s POV I was listening to as there was Mina, Adam, and the passengers!! I think 11 different pov‘s and just one lousy reader. This needed to be a multi cast narration!!!! But the story was SUPER fun even if some parts were implausible. And yes, I adored the ending 2y
Cinfhen My FAVORITE thriller is still this one by Clare Macintosh @MallenNC 2y
MallenNC @Cinfhen I love that one! 2y
Cinfhen It‘s THE BEST @MallenNC 2y
Laughterhp Yes, I really enjoyed this one. The twist at the end was good. And yes, the hijackers reasoning was a bit silly. 2y
monalyisha Ha! Too funny. A narrator can really make or break and audiobook. 2y
Cinfhen This was the first time I was really disappointed by an awful narration @monalyisha usually they add to the story not distract 😖 2y

A flight attendant‘s family is threatened by eco-terrorists on a non-stop voyage from London to Sydney, Australia. The book switches among various passengers, and the flight attendant‘s husband, and the terrorists who are identified by pseudonyms. Also at stake is the flight attendant‘s five-year old daughter.

This is an engaging book if you are looking for light reading during the holidays.

It is hard to review Hostage without spoiling it. My full review has spoilers: https://bit.ly/3miTs0p

Generally speaking though, this book lacked the tension that I expected it to have. Mackinstosh tried to tackle too many topics and one of the storylines felt unnecessary. I didn‘t like the motivation behind the hostage situation itself, and while I think Mackintosh had good intentions, the way the story was written sends the wrong message.

Mina is trying to focus on her job as a flight attendant and not the problems of her five-year-old daughter back home or the problems with her marriage. The inaugural nonstop flight between London and Sydney will take 20 hours. The plane has barely taken off when Mina receives a chilling threat from an anonymous passenger who is intent on ensuring the plane never reaches its destination.

EadieB Someone who needs Mina's assistance and who knows exactly how to make her comply. A lot can happen in 20 hours. You can save hundreds of lives, or the one that matters most. This is a page-turner with a surprise ending that I didn't see coming. It was a slow-start but once it took off the suspense began to build. 2y
EadieB The chapters switch between 3 points of view, Mina, Adam (her husband) and a passenger. If you like books that feel like roller coaster rides, then you will like this one. 2y

Oh man - this hit the sweet spot of what I needed in a thriller with sort of the slow, steady unravelling. Mackintosh created such a layered story that just played everything so well and I loved interjecting the passenger stories in between Mina & Adam's narratives. I'll definitely need to start in on Mackintosh's back list soon.

Book 2/4 for #OutstandingOctober

I will say, I kind of knew the big twists before they were revealed so wasn‘t all that shocked. However it didn‘t deter from my overall enjoyment. Perfect for a tense, thrilling read! 🌟🌟🌟🌟 1/2

Hostage had its moments. At times it was relatively compelling, but in the end it just had too much going on for me. The accumulated clutter of plot concepts made each of the elements less convincing. An okay read but not one I‘d rush to.

⭐⭐⭐⭐
Having just read Falling last week, I couldn't help but compare the two books. This one was far better, in my opinion. The characters were better written, the plot had fewer (though not 0) holes, and it was just an overall better book. I do think it could have been a bit shorter, but it was an enjoyable read.

Are two books a trend? This is the second book I have read in the last few weeks that has hijackers taking over a plane by threatening the crews‘ loved ones at home. I was interested enough to keep turning the pages, but the plot holes were hard to ignore. The characters were well-drawn, but not very sympathetic. The high point of the book is the epilogue. I preferred this author‘s previous books, but this one is worth it for the ending.

The only thing that's hard about reviewing thrillers like this is that it's tough to explain what I didn't like without spoilers. It's a fast paced highjacking thriller with twists I didn't see coming (some that I thought were cheesy, others, like the ending, that I found highly effective). Overall a solid page turner, but not Mackintosh's best in my opinion ✈️ 3.5⭐️

Another Clare Mackintosh success! Fast paced, great twist at the end. I really enjoy her thrillers.

Mina is a flight attendant with a little girl at home. Mina is plagued by the same feelings that most working moms face. Guilt for not being home, guilt for feeling fulfilled by her work. She volunteers to work the first 20 hour non-stop flight to Australia & realizes the sacrifices she will make to save her daughter. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
