The Lighthouse Witches
The Lighthouse Witches | C. J. Cooke
Two sisters go missing on a remote Scottish island. Twenty years later, one is found--but she's still the same age as when she disappeared. The secrets of witches have reached across the centuries in this chilling Gothic thriller from the author of the acclaimed The Nesting. When single mother Liv is commissioned to paint a mural in a 100-year-old lighthouse on a remote Scottish island, it's an opportunity to start over with her three daughters--Luna, Sapphire, and Clover. When two of her daughters go missing, she's frantic. She learns that the cave beneath the lighthouse was once a prison for women accused of witchcraft. The locals warn her about wildlings, supernatural beings who mimic human children, created by witches for revenge. Liv is told wildlings are dangerous and must be killed. Twenty-two years later, Luna has been searching for her missing sisters and mother. When she receives a call about her youngest sister, Clover, she's initially ecstatic. Clover is the sister she remembers--except she's still seven years old, the age she was when she vanished. Luna is worried Clover is a wildling. Luna has few memories of her time on the island, but she'll have to return to find the truth of what happened to her family. But she doesn't realize just how much the truth will change her.

I loved this book so much. Luna's mother and two sisters disappeared on a tiny Scottish Island when she was a child. And now, years later, one of her sisters has returned, and she is still the same age as when she disappeared 🖤

In 1998 an artist is hired to do a mural at an abandoned lighthouse on a Scottish island. Once there, weird things happen & she learns of 12 women burned as witches in the 1600s & the curse they laid on the island & its inhabitants. A couple months later she & 2 of her daughters have vanished, leaving the 3rd child alone. 22 years later Luna's little sister is found but she's still 7 years old.

This was a cover buy, it's so pretty. The story itself was just ok. I liked the twist, but it was a little boring overall. Didn't hold my attention.

A single mother moves her family to a remote island so she can paint a mural in an old lighthouse owned by the wealthiest man in town, when 2 of her daughters suddenly go missing. 20yrs later 1 of them is found, but she hasn‘t aged at all.

Loved how this book pays homage to the unnamed ppl burned at the stake for witchcraft.

I wasn‘t sure what to think at all from the intro, this came together in very unexpected ways! Very unique story telling. I feel like there are a couple of loose threads, but it was very satisfying so I won‘t pull in them too hard.

1. Currently reading the tagged book which is dual timeline. The past is set on a fictional remote Scottish island named Lòn Haven.
2. I love it when authors capture the vibe of little neighborhoods nestled in big cities, so I‘m drawn to stories set in London, Manhattan, etc… Luckily for me there are so many to choose from!
3. I have a thing for closed settings so I love me a boarding school, spaceship, crazy small town, cult. #wondrouswednesday

This was a slow moving plot that picked up in middle/end. I loved the plot twists but I was almost too bored with it by that point.

I would recommend this to someone looking for a mild mystery.

This was not at all what I expected. It‘s marketed as a thriller/horror novel, but it is neither. It is a mystery with magical/supernatural elements. I liked the way all of the threads wove together, but it takes a long time to get there. I think the payoff is worth the journey, but an edge-of-your-seat thriller, this is not.

My book club will be discussing this one a little later in the month- I usually wait to listen a bit closer but I don‘t think I‘ll have any trouble remembering this one! In 1998, Luna‘s mother and two sisters go missing. In 2021, she receives a call that her younger sister has been found… but she‘s not 29… she‘s still 7! Multiple timelines and narrators make this a quick and engaging listen! The plot takes some unexpected turns but it‘s fun!

I really enjoyed the tale told by C.J Cooke, a story based around the Scottish witch trials, folklore and wildlings. Suspenseful and skin tingling at times, particularly when the story is being told by the characters in the past. Made me check my children for marks 🤣🤣 I look forward to more by this author.

August was a hit or miss month. I really enjoyed some of the stuff I read, but I also read some stuff that I didn‘t like. I also dnfed more than I read. Some I put down to pick up at another time, but I just couldn‘t push through Old Country. So I‘m still on the hunt for some spooky season reads. Help me out and drop a few in the comments. I need some material for my September tbr.

I really enjoyed parts of The Lighthouse Witches. It‘s set on a remote Scottish Island that is full of folklore. It‘s so atmospheric and creepy. But there were a few glaring plot issues that were hard to ignore. And then a sci-fi plot line came out of left field and completely dissolved the folklore plot line that I loved.

I‘m going to be honest; I don‘t imagine that I will read very much this month. We‘re right in the middle of remodeling our house and it‘s probably going to take a month to get everything back in place when they‘re finished. The chances of having enough time to read is slim. Plus, all of my things from my living room are blocking my tbr shelf right now. So I‘m reading the two books that I have access to. 😂😂😂

What are you reading in August?
