Does anybody else do this?
Split up the pages into how many days you want to read the book in?
Ive found this is easier when a bunch of holds come in from the library and theyre all due back on the same day!

An internally different world from Black's previous book series (The Folk of Air). If you had expected something similar it isn't at all, which is what makes it unique. The first half of the book was slow, and a part of me got tired of the book fast, but in the later acts of the book, especially the characters were the saving grace for me.
Not for me.... Was hoping I'd fall in love with it like I did her YA books when I was younger. #bookspinbingo @thearomaofbooks
🎧 Charlie‘s self aware, she makes bad choices & she‘s ok with them, unapologetically so.
She meets Vince who quickly moves in with her & her quirky sister. She‘s constantly 2nd guessing him. She‘s untrusting, probably because she‘s a 1st class liar & thief. Soon she finds what she‘s looking for & the lies start unraveling but will they matter in the end?
Adult themes but a YA plot?
The twist will hopefully play out in future volumes.

My current buddy read, an enjoyable and my first adult fantasy read. Morally gray characters here I come 🥲

On to the next one! I had 6 library holds come in at the same time!
I already gave up on More Than Youll Ever Know.
Not me making a quick stack of my recent #bookofthemonth books I haven‘t read yet🫠 didn‘t realize it was so many! Definitely going to get my reading on this summer📚📚📚
Well, I finally finished reading Holly Black‘s The Book of Night. It‘s pretty good! I just learned that the story is a duology which made me smile. There‘s no way that Holly would leave us hanging like that. #TheBookofNight #HollyBlack
Just arrived today! The Owlcrate special edition of Book of Night!!!!
The urban parts of this urban fantasy felt really well researched, and even without the fantasy element the various cons, B&Es, and double crosses hit me in my Leverage loving heart. I respect a character with a large collection of wigs.
My overall sense of this book is Raymond Chandler meets Supernatural.
“With no good ideas, she was going to go for the bad one. They better carve that on her tomb, the Charlie Hall credo.”
This is a soft pick ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2 stars. I love the world building and I love the fact that not all of the characters are likable especially the FMC. What I didn‘t care for was the pacing. It‘s a 300 page book but reads like a chunkster at times. The ending was good but is a cliffhanger and I have a feeling the wait for the next book will be long.
This urban fantasy—the author‘s first targeted at adults instead of younger audiences—was unpleasant and anticlimactic instead of magical and thrilling. Read my full review here: https://debbybrauer.org/#book-of-night
My #goldsborobooks edition arrived today! I‘ve set aside what I was planning on starting so I can dive into this one. #hollyblack
Tor, you are killing me with the book details, *excited gasp.* I am definitely also feeling validated in my general resolution to always read books without their dust jackets.
Adult FairyLoot, May book. This is the first book box I‘ve received where I like the naked hardcover infinitely more than the jacket! I like the bag the books come in as it‘s reusable❣️

I LOVED this basically up until the climax when it did a triple-hit on my biggest pet peeve 😬 I knew what the object was that Charlie removed, so did she need to be so mysterious about it?
Ahem. Charlie was a fantastic POV character. I love her inner conflict and her scammer skills. The magic system and world were absolutely fascinating and wonderful. Vince was a hottie. And I thought this was a standalone but I may riot without a sequel!
I‘m not sure what I was expecting from Holly Black‘s first ‘adult‘ book. I do love her Folk of the Air series, and I guess the main characters in this are a little older, but it‘s not super dark or steamy. It took me a while to get in to the audiobook, but once it hit its stride, I was hooked—and then it ends with a 🤬ing cliffhanger, with no planned sequel in the works I can find.
Still, Holly‘s excellent writing/world building=pick.
⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
If she was going to get murdered, she‘d like to do it in Paris. Or Tokyo.
Sure, it had been hard to keep her worst impulses in check these past ten months, but it was better than being a lit match in a town she‘d already doused in gasoline.
My Book of Night preorder tote bag came! 🎉 And I am absolutely loving the book, to no one‘s surprise.
Rainy days are for reading and cuddling cats. Our sunporch has a metal roof, so the rain hitting that makes for a perfect soundtrack.

#AudioGardening to get my veggies started.
I didn't like it as much as I like Holly Black's The Folk of the Air series, which I thought was amazing. This book was okay, but I found it hard to follow in some places. I liked the ideas, but I'm not sure they all completely came together for me. It may just be my mood.
1st book read for the #MarvellousMay #Readathon @Andrew65
I see what the so-so raters mean; the plot was so different and unique it took awhile to get vested in the story. But I hung in there and was rewarded at the end. A plot twist I totally did not see coming! The second half of the book was much better but it did take me some time before I was interested. I love Holly Black‘s books and if you‘re a fan also, then this is a must read. If you are new to this author, I would start with the other series.
Normally, I try to take a break between books but I cannot put this one down. I‘m up to page 55. #HollyBlack #BookofNight
I suspect this might be an #UnpopularOpinion but I found Black‘s adult debut to be underwhelming. While it might be a “me & not the book” situation, I found the worldbuilding to be super clunky, the characters a little flat, & the story not particularly interesting—all of which is surprising since I‘m generally a fan of Black‘s writing. The ending makes it clear there‘s more to come but I doubt I‘ll continue. It just didn‘t hold my interest.
I‘m going to REALLY try not to bail on my current read and immediately start these 💙😭 #botm
Ruby Fever was my favorite book of April. But up against Book of Night, it was a hard choice, I decided on Book of Night. #2022ReadingBracket

Thank you TOR for the ARC!
I just couldn't get into this. Definitely not the right time for me, will pick it back up later. Not pre-ordering a special edition book yet :( had high hopes!
Fans of secret societies, shadow magic, and urban fantasy will savor Holly Black‘s adult fantasy debut. Book of Night follows the recovering thief Charlie Hall, as she finds her plans to go straight, put her sister through college knocked off course, and enjoy the company of her shadowless boyfriend are all knocked off course when a ghastly figure from her shady past returns and she‘s swept up in dark and twisting plot full of murder and magic.
I was very excited about Black finally writing adult fantasy so there may have been some squealing when this ARC arrived. Charlie is trying hard to put her past as a con artist and thief behind her and focus on important things like sending her sister to college. The problem is that Charlie is a damn good thief and a magnet for trouble. This was a really fun read with interesting world building. I am looking forward to more about Charlie.
This is a definite pick for me. I enjoyed this dark fantasy thoroughly. Charlie is a flawed, but likable character (my favorite). She's trying to lead a straight life away from thievery, but that world just won't leave her alone. I was highly intrigued by the mysterious Vincent. Great worldbuilding and tension. Some people have learned to control their shadows. I'm crossing my fingers Black makes this into a series. Out May 3rd.
So satisfying! This is going to get a ton of comparisons to Night House but honestly, it's way more fun.
Secrets, murder, shadow magic, con artists, and a surprising amount of romance. I feel like Stefon: This. Book. Has. Everything.
Seriously though, a very fun and fast read. I haven't read Black's YA fae books, but I'm definitely going to now.
Some how it's already Sunday afternoon here. Tempus fugit. I'm starting Holly Black's next book today. This one is adult fantasy. And still listening to the Nineties. It's good, I just haven't made time to listen to it.
Ooooooooooo!!!!!! “A modern dark fantasy of shadowy thieves and secret societies.” Coming May 3, 2022.
