The Annotated Sense and Sensibility
The Annotated Sense and Sensibility | Jane Austen, David M. Shapard
24 posts | 17 read | 6 to read
From the editor of the popular Annotated Pride and Prejudice comes an annotated edition of Jane Austens Sense and Sensibility that makes this tale of two sisters in love an even more enjoyable read. Here is the complete text of the novel with more than 2,000 annotations on facing pages, including: -Explanations of historical context -Citations from Austens life, letters, and other writings -Definitions and clarifications -Literary comments and analysis -Multiple maps of England and London -An introduction, bibliography, and detailed chronology of events -More than 100 informative illustrations Filled with fascinating information about everything from the rules of inheritance that could leave a wealthy mans daughters almost penniless to the fashionable cult of sensibility that Austen so brilliantly satirizes, David M. Shapards Annotated Sense and Sensibility is an entertaining and edifying delight. From the Trade Paperback edition.

4⭐️ Really enjoyed the book, although having the annotations sometimes were a bit of an nuisance at times. While not my favourite Austen, it was still highly enjoyable. #2022 #fiction #reread #classics #readalong #bookreview #bookstagram #pemberlittens

Finished the audiobook! The 1995 movie version is one of my top favorite period films, and I love the story. It was an enjoyable read!

Finished the barrettes ! Much easier than earrings, other than working with Super glue! Going to keep the ones in the far bottom left for myself 💙 Going to sand and smooth them about and they will soon be ready to package ! I have loved this time of Audio-crafting- it‘s been good for my soul and much needed

Tested out the polymer clay as flat squares yesterday with leftover clay for barrettes & the effect was of beautiful simplicity! Today working with more colorful clay and shapes for barrettes whilst listening to Sense and Sensibility 📚☕️

Somehow I've only read this Austen once, even though I've watched the movie countless times. It was long past due for a revisit! I'm such a Marianne it's not even funny. #pemberlittens #teamsensibility

A chapter a day was perfect for stressful times. I still love this book. I‘m especially glad I read the annotated edition since it explained many things I had been curious about. Hooray for #pemberlittens and our mighty organizer @sprainedbrain

One last flannel waistcoat mention: "who still sought the constitutional safeguard of a flannel waistcoat!" ?

It's been a blast #Pemberlittens! Slowing down & reading gave me new appreciation for the story. I still don't see what Col B sees in Marianne but I'm glad he's happy. I'm definitely more Sense than Sensibility.
Thank You @sprainedbrain for all you've done!

Reviewsbylola I bought an annotated Austen fairly recently but I can‘t remember which one it was. Maybe Mansfield Park? 5y
batsy I loved that final flannel waistcoat reference 😆 5y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Reviewsbylola I'm thinking I want Pride and Prejudice one because it's my favorite and to learn something new. MP one would be good because it's the hardest for me to read. 5y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @batsy I'd forgotten about it. So had a good laugh at the end. 5y

"could chuse papers, project shrubberies, and invent a sweep."
In which @sprainedbrain I manage to learn one last thing.
As a Gardener I knew about shubberies. But I didn't know what 'invent a sweep' meant.
'A sweep was a curved carriage drive leading to a house.' ?

Reading a chapter a day has been extremely rewarding. I appreciate with each read how Austen thinks through the problem of How Should a Woman Be; the ideals of sense & sensibility as two contradictory forces that must be resolved through practice & thought & emotions if one is to get through life at all. The "marriage plot" is a useful device to probe deeper themes & the compromises that have to be made. A wise, illuminating novel. #pemberlittens

batsy Thanks to @sprainedbrain for organising and the experience was greatly enhanced by all of the fun and serious discussions and unforgettable memes 😁 I wrote a longer review of the Annotated S&S way back in 2013, delving into some criticism as well, and was surprised to learn that I still agree with most of it. It's here for anyone interested: https://www.popmatters.com/175709-sense-and-sensibility-by-jane-austen-249571906... 5y

Daisey Another wonderful review, and I agree that chapter a day reading really helps me focus on my reading and often gain more from it when I can stick with it. 5y
sprainedbrain What a great review from 2013! Thank you so much for being part of the group! ❤️ 5y
batsy @Daisey Thank you! I found the chapter a day really interesting in how I thought about what was happening, instead of "inhaling" the book as it were (as I tend to do with Austen ?) 5y

I love the movie adaptation to bits but this note in my annotated edition is quite right in explaining how Edward and Brandon were made attractive, charming, and worthy partners in the adaptation. With each reread I feel this book is mainly about the bittersweet compromises for women of Elinor and Marianne's position. #PemberLittens @sprainedbrain

sprainedbrain That is quite right! I agree that Marianne definitely ‘settled‘ but I do still think Edward is Elinor‘s heart‘s desire... for some reason. 😂 5y
meghathecloud @sprainedbrain 'for some reason'😂. Somehow we never end up getting the reason from the book. Sometimes I think Elinor is confusing his shyness with sense. And she projects way too much of her own thoughts onto him. 5y
Palimpsest Thanks for sharing! @batsy I agree 5y
See All 14 Comments
Andrea313 @meghathecloud @sprainedbrain I think Elinor likes Edward's outwardly moral qualities. In keeping his engagement with Lucy because it's the "right" thing to do, I think it makes Elinor respect him (even as it breaks her heart). To me, Edward is ineffectual and a bit of a coward, but I get the sense that Elinor finds his sense of duty and self-sacrifice a real turn-on. 5y
Andrea313 @meghathecloud @sprainedbrain However, I do think a lifetime of poverty is a pretty bad turn for someone as smart, strong, and deserving as Elinor! 5y
LeahBergen ‘Diffident sad sack‘ and ‘Stolid sad sack‘. 😆😆 It‘s so true! 5y
batsy @Palimpsest You're welcome! I'm in agreement, as well 😁 5y
batsy @Andrea313 @meghathecloud @sprainedbrain That's an astute assessment of Elinor's character! I do believe that's what turns her on, so to speak 😆 5y
batsy @LeahBergen I loved that, too! So apt 😂 5y
AvidReader25 Love that adaptation and she‘s right about why it was successful! 5y
batsy @AvidReader25 Yes, agreed :) 5y
rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen @batsy What a perfect description of those two. 😂 5y
Centique That is so interesting! I‘m going to have to watch it again and recast them in my head 🤔 5y
batsy @Centique I'm looking forward to watching it again, too! Just wondering if we had actors play Ferrars in a slightly toned down Mr Collins way (all the awkwardness minus the comedy), how would audiences respond to the character 🙃 5y

For those #Pemberlittens wanting to know about Jane Austen nail polish. https://www.livelovepolish.com/collections/jane-austen I have Sense & Sensibility on my 💅 and Wisdom or Wit on👣. Both react to temperature which is fun. I garden so my fingernails are short. Would be more interesting on long nails. Both go on fairly light. I did a 3rd coat of color instead of topcoat. Also need to make sure they are well shaken. More thoughts 🔽

Crinoline_Laphroaig I prefer Wit or Wisdom. It's clear and brighter. Transitions between pearlescent white (warm), sky blue, and purple (cold) with holographic glitter and blue-to-green shifting shimmer. Looks better with my skin tone. 5y
Crinoline_Laphroaig Sense and Sensibility transitions between beige (warm), dark periwinkle, and amethyst (cold) with holographic glitter and copper shimmer. As is often with pale colors it looks dull after a couple of days. Really like periwinkle and amethyst transitions Unfortunately it's my least favorite beige most of the time in this warm weather. 5y
Crinoline_Laphroaig I also bought First Impressions and By A Lady. Saving them for Pride and Prejudice Readalong. 5y

So much to understand in this Ch. Reading again w/ Annotations:
"Her legal allowance was not adequate to her fortune,*37..... the power of receiving it had been made over some months before to another person. He imagined, and calmly could he imagine it, that her extravagance, and consequent distress, had obliged her to dispose of it for some immediate relief*38."

Basically, Payday Lenders of Austen's day. ?

#Characters2017 #Hufflepuff I think based on their loyalty, kindness, dedication, and fair play, all four characters in the pairings of Elinor Dashwood & Edward Ferrars of Sense and Sensibility and Jane Bennet & Charles Bingley of Pride & Prejudice would end up sorted into the Hufflepuff house. 📚💛

I read this after seeing it staged as a play. The play was my first encounter at all with Sense and Sensibility. Visualizing the actors helped ground me in the characters as I read. Also, having the annotations to explain social context made all the difference in understanding what was going on, which I otherwise would have bailed
