Husbands | Holly Gramazio
INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - READ WITH JENNA'S APRIL BOOK CLUB PICK - The Husbands delights in asking: how do we navigate life, love, and choice in a world of never-ending options? ("A bottomless champagne flute of a novel --The Washington Post) When Lauren returns home to her flat in London late one night, she is greeted at the door by her husband, Michael. There's only one problem--she's not married. She's never seen this man before in her life. But according to her friends, her much-improved decor, and the photos on her phone, they've been together for years. As Lauren tries to puzzle out how she could be married to someone she can't remember meeting, Michael goes to the attic to change a lightbulb and abruptly disappears. In his place, a new man emerges, and a new, slightly altered life re-forms around her. Realizing that her attic is creating an infinite supply of husbands, Lauren confronts the question: If swapping lives is as easy as changing a lightbulb, how do you know you've taken the right path? When do you stop trying to do better and start actually living?

I feel like the messaging was finally made clear in the second last chapter, but it was a long, repetitive journey. There were some chuckles for sure along the way, but there were also too many instances where the character did something too outlandish to believe, even under the groundhog day type loop. I was surprised I finished it. The last chapter being in a different pov was weird, too.

This was much more fun than expected.
Each time Lauren‘s husband enters the attic, there returns a new one. An seemingly endless supply of husbands is at hand for Lauren. She takes her time to ask herself what she wants from marriage, a man, and herself.
Holly Gramazio has written a very original story that made me laugh and think. #ToB24

I‘m about 100 pages into this and it‘s a fun, light read so far. I don‘t usually like alternate reality books (they freak me out!) but the main character isn‘t taking things that seriously as her life is changing with each different husband, so I‘m not stressing about it either. Having a chill moment with Zoe but then I need to buckle down with packing… not my favorite thing but I need to power through so I can move to PA and start my bookstore!

bookandbedandtea 1- your tattoo is awesome! 2- PA is apparently the right place to open a bookstore 😉 3w

CatLass007 I agree with @bookandbedandtea that your tattoo is awesome. I‘m not sure I agree with @rubyslippersreads about Zoe helping with packing. My kitties always want to be in the box or suitcase to make sure they don‘t get ignored. They‘re not particularly helpful with making beds either. But Zoe is a doll.😻 3w

CatLass007 Why did you choose to move to Pennsylvania to open your bookstore? I think it would be fabulous if you posted in progress photos and comments on Litsy! I remember years ago after I left New York and moved in with my parents for “a few short months” to regain my health and figure out what I wanted to do next, that I read an article advising people to research and decide where they wanted to move and then figure out what sort of work to do. (cont)⬇️ 3w
CatLass007 It sounds like you made those decisions concurrently. Maybe I see a road trip to Pennsylvania in my future. Is there anyone from East Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, or northeastern North Carolina who‘s up for that? Okay, a little more seriously, I think this: https://batteryparkbookexchange.com/ sounds like an awesome idea and if I could convince someone(s) to go I would agree to be the designated driver.😁 3w
LiteraryinLawrence @bookandbedandtea @JenniferEgnor @CatLass007 @Hooked_on_books @PaperbackPirate Thanks for the enthusiasm! The bookstore will be on the main street (State St) in Media, PA. A lot went into choosing the location, some personal factors and some market research. Media is the type of downtown that should have a bookstore but doesn‘t… yet! 😁 3w

2.5 🌟 Audio recommended by local bookstore. Interesting premise. I was interested every few chapters, but it dragged on to me. Took too long for Lauren to figure things out, then I didn‘t like the “just reset the world by sending the husband up” while she‘d judge them by one thing. kept waiting for a connection for the best person. I‘m single and don‘t feel any more pushed to marry by looking for the “right man”. Rushed end.

Lauren returns home from a night out to discover a strange man in her apartment. He knows her name and seems to believe he‘s her husband…? He eventually goes up to the attic and another “husband” returns. Lauren has a magic attic! Can you imagine? Sending a husband away when you are ready for another?? Punchy, British, witty, highly entertaining but with heart. I really loved this and it‘ll be a standout for my summer reading of 2024!

I really enjoyed this! Its premise is so clever and I totally bought into the idea that a magic attic provided a seemingly endless supply of husbands. I thought the way changing husbands also changed her life was so interesting to think about. My only small complaint is that there‘s never any explanation for why this was happening to her. But I just went along for the ride.

This was a win for me! Lauren is single, but suddenly, a new husband appears out of the attic, and when he rerurns up the ladder, a new husband comes down the ladder in his place. With each new husband, details about her life change as well. Lauren now faces seemingly infinite options of husbands and alternate realities to choose from! I loved the weird premise and the characters, and I laughed out loud throughout. It had depth and heart as well!

Lesliereadsalot As crazy as the premise of this book was, I really liked where it went and how it ended up. Found myself recommending it to all my friends. 2mo

The beginning of this novel was hilarious as Lauren figures out that there‘s some strange magic in her attic that gives her a different husband every time she sends her current one in there. It‘s very strange, but once she figures it out she cycles through a lot of them, and as each one shows quirks she can‘t live with she sends them back.

It doesn‘t finish as strongly for me, though, I felt let down in the end. So low pick.

Hooked_on_books I had a pretty similar response. It was such a fun listen that I wanted to keep going with but I hated the ending. What a dreadful message about marriage it leaves the reader with. 😝 3mo

🙄interesting idea but got tedious after awhile. I wanted to like it more than I did. I almost bailed halfway through. Anywho, I was surprised at the MCs lack of growth, annoying in the fact it sort of implies marriage is be all , end all. Seemed to me she had a pretty decent single life. Also seems like it is specifically written to secure movie or TV rights. 🙄Maybe I‘m just being a grump, ignore me or send me back up to the attic!

AvidReader25 I think it sounds interesting, but I keep seeing similar reviews. 3mo

At the beginning, I loved this. During the middle and towards the end, I felt it dragged on and on. I liked the way the author ended the book. Overall, I am not sure of the point. I am not sure the main character learned anything or gained any valuable insight. This was all very elaborate for Lauren to just finally settle on one with no real introspection.

I started this book and thought “What a stupid idea for a book!” but I kept reading and it just got better and better and turned out that I really liked it. It‘s totally far-fetched, the premise being that the main character can send her husband up into the attic and he will come down a different guy. And her life will revolve around this new husband, until she gets him to go back into the attic. Lots of humor and a good story.

I didn‘t feel like this novel was very deep or anything, it didn‘t really address any of the enduring questions on being a human in the world, but I will say this: there is a scene towards the end that had me just crying with laughter and that is enough for me! The main character is genuinely amusing and I liked her, I hope this one gets made into a tv show I think it would work. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was a fun and creative twist on Groundhog Day where the MC‘s life remains essentially the same except for the revolving door of husbands arriving from her attic. I could have done with fewer husbands with more pages given to the characters that helped Lauren come to her final decision. I think Bohai‘s experiences would have been even more entertaining to read so I‘m intrigued to learn about the author‘s decision in her writing process.

A clever idea in theory but in execution, it felt like a *long* walk to an obvious point. At times it reminded me of The Midnight Library but while I loved that book, this just felt shallow and sad.

Not sure what the takeaway of this tale truly is. Maybe that also got exchanged along the way in the attic? 🤷🏻‍♀️🪜🫖☕️

Hooked_on_books I‘m very disappointed with the ending. Really? You HAVE to be married, so just settle? Barf. I liked earlier in the book where she was going forward with the divorce and just exploring what life was like. That would have been a much better ending, whether she ended up with someone or not. 4mo
TheKidUpstairs @Hooked_on_books completely agree! I kept thinking she was going to find a way back to her single life having learned something from all of it. And if not that, it totally should have ended with the divorce, and her starting over. Again, having learned something. But it doesn't seem like she learned anything at all! 4mo

I couldn't put this one down! The concept of a magic attic spawning husbands like a dating app was intriguing. However, it grew repetitive as we barely connected with the many characters. The ending felt rushed, lacking closure. The message about finding happiness within was solid, but the pacing at the end could've been slower to enrich the experience.

A really entertaining book centered around the idea that if Lauren can get her husband to climb up into the attic, a new husband climbs back down. Her world instantly shifts with each new husband. Her job changes, the decor in her house changes, her bank account changes. Her relationships with family and friends changes. Sometimes she lives with the husband for a few days, a few weeks, or sometimes it's minutes. A good 3.5 star read.

One night Lauren returns home to find a strange man in her flat - only he claims to be her husband. Strangely, everything around her backs him up but when he climbs up into the attic & a different man emerges, also claiming to be her husband, Lauren slowly realises that her attic is creating an endless supply of different husbands. As one is exchanged for another over & over, Lauren begins to wonder 'how do you know when you have the right one?'

OutsmartYourShelf One look at the synopsis & I knew I had to request this one. The idea behind the book was an excellent one & the author could have gone anywhere with the storyline. The first 35% was really engaging & gently funny, however, it went on & on for far too long. The character of Bohai was brought in & I thought this heralded something resembling a plot about to begin, but ultimately his story arc didn't really amount to anything either. 5mo
OutsmartYourShelf It was the literary equivalent of a fairground carousel - it looks good but ultimately you don't actually go anywhere. 2.5⭐

THe concept of this was so interesting and it carried it off for the most part. Its kind of a slow build despite the rapid changing husbands. The ending whilst not quite what I wanted, I think actually worked really well for the book. It was a dramatic but perfect conclusion.
