Murder in G Major
Murder in G Major | Alexia Gordon
"Charming debut." - Kirkus Reviews "Gordon strikes a harmonious chord in this enchanting spellbinder of a mystery." - Susan M. Boyer, USA Today Bestselling Author of Lowcountry Book Club "Just when you think you've seen everything, here comes Gethsemane Brown, baton in one hand, bourbon in the other. Stranded in an Irish village where she knows no one (but they all know her), she's got just six weeks to turn a rabblesome orchestra into award-winners and solve a decades-old murder to boot. And only a grumpy ghost to help her. There's charm to spare in this highly original debut." - Catriona McPherson, Agatha Award-Winning Author of The Reek of Red Herrings "Gordon's debut is delightful: An Irish village full of characters and secrets, whiskey and music-and a ghost! Gethsemane Brown is a fast-thinking, fast-talking dynamic sleuth (with a great wardrobe) who is more than a match for the unraveling murders and cover-ups, aided by her various-handsome-allies and her irascible ghost. Can't wait to see what she uncovers next!" - Chloe Green, Author of the Dallas O'Connor Mysteries "A fast-paced drama that kept me engaged in all aspects in the telling of this multi-plot tale that was hard to put down...The windup to the conclusion had me quickly turning the pages as I had to know how this will play out and to the author, I say "bravo" because now I need to read the next book in this captivating series." - Dru's Book Musings With few other options, African-American classical musician Gethsemane Brown accepts a less-than-ideal position turning a group of rowdy schoolboys into an award-winning orchestra. Stranded without luggage or money in the Irish countryside, she figures any job is better than none. The perk? Housesitting a lovely cliffside cottage. The catch? The ghost of the cottage's murdered owner haunts the place. Falsely accused of killing his wife (and himself), he begs Gethsemane to clear his name so he can rest in peace. Gethsemane's reluctant investigation provokes a dormant killer and she soon finds herself in grave danger. As Gethsemane races to prevent a deadly encore, will she uncover the truth or star in her own farewell performance? Related subjects include: cozy mysteries, women sleuths, murder mystery series, whodunit mysteries (whodunnit), British mysteries, book club recommendations, amateur sleuth books, paranormal mysteries, Irish cozies, ghost mysteries, music mysteries. Books in the Gethsemane Brown Mystery Series: MURDER IN G MAJOR (#1) Part of the Henery Press Mystery Series Collection, if you like one, you'll probably like them all... Author Bio: A writer since childhood, Alexia Gordon won her first writing prize in the 6th grade. She continued writing through college but put literary endeavors on hold to finish medical school and Family Medicine residency training. She established her medical career then returned to writing fiction. Raised in the southeast, schooled in the northeast, she relocated to the west where she completed Southern Methodist University's Writer's Path program. She admits Texas brisket is as good as Carolina pulled pork. She practices medicine in El Paso. She enjoys the symphony, art collecting, embroidery, and ghost stories.

“I want to leave on a high, not sneak away in shame like the Colts out of Baltimore.“

Several months ago I remembered most of this quote, but could not for the life of me remember the book. I was convinced it was an early Spenser.

I am weirdly thrilled I finally figured out what the book was.

(I enjoyed this series and wish there were more books.)

My afternoon plans involve wee Geo and this supernatural, musical mystery! MURDER IN G MAJOR will be my last #AuldLangSpine title for the month, since I‘m still way down the holds lists for the remaining three titles I can get from the library, and it‘s off to a great start. I‘ve had an awesome time reading through @MeganAnn ‘s list these last few weeks.

For December, I think I will select this one as my #12BooksOf2022 choice. I loved the classical music references, and Gethsemane is a great female character lead. Plus, it‘s set in Ireland, so it was fun to explore small village life through the eyes of Gethsemane, an American who moved to the village. Add a ghost to the mix, and it works well. I plan to read the rest of the series.

Andrew65 This looks excellent and is on my TBR. Thanks for playing along, it‘s been a good way to review the year. 1y
MeganAnn I loved this one too for all the same reasons… plus I loved her interactions with her teenage students and how they played a part in the end. Hoping to read the rest of the series eventually as well. 1y

I really enjoyed this mystery set in Ireland and featuring a classic musician, a haunted house, and a group of unruly boys. Gethsemane is a strong female character who has seen adversity and accepts challenges. I love the quirky characters she meets and will definitely pick up the second book in the series. #2016 #192025

#nsr22 update

Finished the mystery category with these four titles. While I really loved all of these, Murder in G Major was an unexpected favorite.

I only managed one title in the horror categories, Bunny for a thriller which I very much enjoyed. I generally don‘t read a lot of horror books though so this was always going to be a hard one. And most of year I turned towards feel good romance titles instead.

Nessavamusic Great job! I feel like I should give Bunny another chance… 1y
MeganAnn @Nessavamusic I can definitely see how it wouldn‘t be right for everyone and seems to have lots of mixed reviews. I loved it for its weirdness and “the Heathers” vibes. It‘s the exact sort of weird supernatural horror that is about the only kind I actually like. 🤷‍♀️😆 I‘ll take this over a typical psychological thriller any day! (edited) 1y
BeeMagical So glad you liked Bunny! I loved it! I very much enjoy Awads style of writing🐰🎭 1y

Stranded, Gethsemane Brown takes on the job of turning a bunch of recalcitrant teens into an award winning orchestra. Of course, then she also needs to solve a 25 year old murder case because the accused murderer is haunting her house.

Quick and clever, loved the use of music, loved the Irish small town setting. But, all the characters but the main felt flat, and I really dislike the sequel bait ending of a new problem in the last 5% 🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑

BookmarkTavern #DiverseCozy Also CW 👇🏻 (edited) 1y
BookmarkTavern I immensely disliked how everyone in this entire book, ESPECIALLY the last 20 minutes, seemed to treat people with mental illnesses as inherently violent and deserving of mockery. (edited) 1y
sarahbellum Yes, I completely agree with your CW criticism. I kept thinking, “wait, there‘s yet another unstable person in this town?? How in the world is everyone so violent??” The author could have handled that way better 😕 (edited) 1y
BookmarkTavern @sarahbellum Yeah. Liked I could expect that kind of behavior from some of the town folk, but the narrative never says it‘s bad, and Gethsemane aggressively uses that belief at the very end. It left me feeling uncomfortable. Which was frustrating, because the rest of the story was fun. A little silly, but enjoyable. 1y

This was a great, quick read for the flight home yesterday and acclimating to being back home today. I‘m not typically one for the supernatural, but it was handled with a lot of humor in this cozy, which made it easier for me to suspend my disbelief. A few things bothered me about the storyline (sooo many village “crazies” and some inconsistencies), but it was mainly good, fluffy fun. Also loved learning a bunch of Irish slang 🙃 #diversecozy

sarahbellum Gus is also very happy we‘re home 🐶💖 #dogsoflitsy 2y
tokorowilliamwallace Nice, some Irish slang. That's one of the interesting parts about Seanan McGuire's October Daye series: the use of Irish Gaelic terms/names and mythology. Also with these Phil Rickman supernatural horrors I just recently picked up: the use of Welsh and its urban legends. 2y

When I took a course on diversity in libraries, we talked about read-alikes; if a patron tells you they like a certain book, what books you can recommend that are similar to what they like but are by diverse authors. This series features a Black woman and is written by a Black woman and was recommended when we talked about cozy mysteries. I‘m loving it and Gethsemane Brown, a classical musician living and teaching in Ireland. #audiowalk

Oh dear, I'm ruining this book's 100% pick rating😬 I didn't hate it, but the fact that I found the ghost more believable than the Irish setting or the musical subplot was a definite problem. Also, I thought the murderer was fairly obvious very early in the story. Sorry to be a bit of a curmudgeon about this one. #BookspinBingo

Absolutely delightful cozy mystery with an added supernatural element. I have to say one the best thing about 2020 is finding so many new African American authors and stories featuring POC as the main character. Gethsemane Brown is an African American classical musician Who is reluctantly pushed into an amateur detective situation by a restless ghost. The characters and the little Irish town were all delightful and engaging. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I didn't read the plot summary before I started so I didn't know there was a supernatural element, but I think it it was well done and fit in the story. While the end wasn't a huge surprise I enjoyed the journey. Also it ended on such a cliff hanger but Libby doesn't have the ebook for the next in the series so I'll have to wait😕

No murder or mystery yet, but a figure, rarely seen, either human or supernatural, roams the Irish hills. An Apparition? A ghost like “Boo” who had not seen the light of day?
The violinist, Gethsemane, has come from America to Ireland in an attempt to recover from, & hopefully salvage her fall from grace in what had been a brilliant & promising orchestra career.
Love when I find a book alluded to in another book.

This was a really nice lazy Sunday mystery.
My only problem was pronouncing character names. You see, Gethsemane is not a name that rolls easily of the tongue, at least not if English isn't your first language.
Nonetheless I really liked Gethsemane and her story, I will definitely pick up the sequel.

Marilyncjackson I met this author she is totally awesome! I love her books. I am glad to see someone else likes her too! 5y
