I did not enjoy this book, possibly because it was so different from what I was expecting. I thought it would be a fictional, but fairly accurate, account of the Pendle Witch Trials, which took place in Lancashire, England in 1612. Instead, although it was based on facts, the author included some really wild speculative aspects to the story. ⬇️

julieclair The narrative was disjointed and hard to follow, and there were so many different characters it was hard to keep them straight (including a completely bizarre cameo appearance by William Shakespeare). The scenes of daily life in Lancashire were depressing, the treatment of the imprisoned accused witches was horrific, and the depictions of the witches' actions were gruesome and macabre. Triggers all over the place. ⬇️ 2w
julieclair I don't know if this technically counts as a horror book, as I rarely read that genre, but it sure felt like one to me.
Most months, my #BookedInTime selection is among my favorite reads. Not this month! @Cuilin #Pantone2024 @BarbaraBB

Cuilin Yeah I‘m not particularly good with horror. This sounds gruesome. Hopefully November‘s #BookedInTime Time of the Pharaohs will be more pleasant. 2w

The emotional depth of this tagged novel is the reason I‘ve not reviewed it.I needed time to process.This historical fiction is told in both narrative & letters, covering the time span from the erecting of the Berlin Wall to its fall.Luisa Voekler,born in East Berlin, but now an agent for the CIA in the U.S.,works decoding World War II messages.When the Wall had just wire,Luisa‘s mother threw her over the wire to her parents in West Berlin.⬇️

kspenmoll ⬆️ As a child,her grandfather prepped her for this work by providing coded puzzles for her to solve & scavenger hunts.After his death, Louisa discovered a secret cachet of letters written by her father,whom she thought was dead. Her grandfather had hidden these letters in a place where she would eventually find them.Luisa goes rogue from the CIA,& travels to East Berlin determined to rescue her father from an East Berlin jail. kspenmoll This novel also impressed upon me the role that East Berlin punk rock bands had in the fall of the Wall as they were allowed to travel into West Berlin to play in concerts. They embedded lyrics crying for freedom,human rights, etc. their music was so loud the lyrics were list on East Berlin officials.These scenes were heart warming- all based on truth. https://bibliolore.org/tag/punk-rock/ 1mo
Cuilin Well that‘s right up my alley. Stacked. I think I will add Cold War period to #BookedInTime. 4w

I've been offline since Thursday so I have to catch up on all my reviews. ( see my previous post)

#BookedInTime 1970s South Africa September 2024
@cuilin @dabbe

This was a compelling story that I really enjoyed and was very well done. The only reason I took off a star was I just didn't like Robin. Even though she did redeem herself a little at the end.
