Brave, heartbreaking, eloquent. Chanel steps boldly into the world to reclaim her name after being Emily Doe for years. You walk with her as she fights first to have her assault acknowledged and then to have the perpetrator accused. Chanel points out the many flaws in our legal system and society that pushed her down instead of lifting her up. A powerful read.

An incredible memoir, strikingly written and boldly read. I am not a big memoir reader, but I‘m glad Sharon McMahon chose this for one of her book club reads, because I think this will end up as one of my best books of the year.
Know My Name is important, and I think everyone should read it.

My picks for best 2022 nonfiction reads - most of these were not published in 2022, but I got to them this year. All of these are stellar books, well researched, well written, engrossing. I learned so much this year!

jlhammar Crying in H Mart was one of my favs last year. So good! Very interested in trying People Love Dead Jews and The Woman They Could Not Silence. 1y
ChaoticMissAdventures @jlhammar I can't recommend either more! I learned so much with People Love, there is a whole chapter on Shakespeare I was totally unaware of. And Woman they Could Not Silence is sad but really does well showing how scary it was to be a woman when your husband could just toss you in an asylum if they were annoyed with you! It isn't too heavy but is written well and easy to digest. 1y

5 stars. Absolutely brilliant writing and thinking went into this book.
Chanel takes us through her journey displaying vulnerability, honesty, creativity, humour, kindness and courage. She teaches me that you don‘t need to have any of the requirements that society tells us we need, before we use our voices and be seen. Showing up as we are is enough.
I love this book.

I fucking hate it here. The system doesn‘t work, there is no reforming it.
I thought this book would be personally more triggering. It was beautifully written and while it was intense, it absolutely made one of her points clear: moving thru things can be better than forgetting. Chanel‘s journey is amazing, totally accessible and hopeful. She did mention wanting to make us see the positive. And we do. But still, it left me bitter and angry and sad.

jploves2read This is on my TBR pile. Maybe I‘ll get to it this Month. In March I read non-fiction by women for Women‘s History Month. 2y
Nalbuque It‘s a truly gorgeous book, and I‘m glad it didn‘t feel suffocatingly heavy- maybe bc it‘s quite long and she did a great job at pacing it/exploring several aspects of the process 2y

The strength it took to not only write this book, but also narrate the audiobook. I read very few books about sexual assault, as I am a survivor myself, but I‘m so glad I read this one. Chanel powerfully reclaims her story in this beautifully written memoir. From my #newyearwhodis list by @mklong ! #nywd

Amiable Agreed. This one on my “best of“ lists for 2021, too. This book is an absolute tour de force. I am in awe of Chanel Miller‘s eloquence, courage, grit and perseverance. 2y
bio_chem06 I just can‘t even imagine being able to so clearly articulate that experience at that age. I know she‘s in her mid20s but I still don‘t think at that age, I would‘ve been able to sound that clear. This book was so powerful! I loved it! 2y

Feeling loads better today, but still in quarantine for another 2 days. Decided to attempt cleaning out the home office closet while listening to the rest of the tagged book! It‘s taken me a while to get through this one as I found it a deeply moving and emotional read. It‘s a very honest account of sexual assault and she doesn‘t hold back. It‘s infuriating to hear first hand how victims of this type of crime are treated, how terrible the justice system still is and how the perpetrator gets away with so much. When she read out her witness statement I was a complete sobbing mess. A definite pick

It is a compelling, moving, and comprehensive memoir. Miller is an excellent writer with a powerful voice. She shares both the intimate emotional damage she‘s experienced while also illuminating the inner workings of the systems and policies that create such a traumatic environment for victims of sexual assault. Recommend it highly.

I can‘t begin to imagine how difficult this book was to write. It makes me nervous for my daughter to leave for school in the fall but she has a good head on her shoulder. She read a similar story in The Washington Post for AP Lang (I think?!) that left her fuming. So grateful for the teachers to tackle these difficult topics to prepare these kids for the world and grateful for Chanel Miller for telling her story and not making it ok!

Tw:

Rape, assault, trauma, blackout, repressed memories

Chanel Miller did what so many survivors haven‘t had the chance to do. She left anonymity and fought not just for her own justice/safety/peace of mind, but for every one else that has to deal with this absolute SHIT. The ups and downs, mental/emotional/physical effects, she wrote such raw descriptions of all of it.. this is a hard to read book (Bc the topic), but so worth it

Jennifer3 I work on the defense side of the system as a social worker and this case makes me so angry about the white privilege I see every day in our system. This case is the epitome of that part of the criminal justice system. I have been meaning to read or audiobook this one. 3y
Cinfhen This book was SO POWERFUL 🙌🏻gorgeous review, Meg. I hear the audiobook is fantastic. 3y
Megabooks @Jennifer3 I had a friend who worked with juvenile sexual offenders early in her career. These were kids that were group homed and not sheltered from the consequences of their crimes the way Brock was. He is a disgusting example of privilege run amok, and I think she makes a valid point that if he had a less bright future the consequences would‘ve been different and that in itself is wrong. I commend her for putting herself out there so much! 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen thank you friend! Yes, the audiobook is excellent and very powerful. 3y
Hooked_on_books I have so much respect for this young woman. It‘s so valuable to other young survivors to hear her voice. 🙌🏼 3y
Megabooks @Hooked_on_books 💯💯 she is tougher than any person should be expected to be after all that followed her rape. Unfortunately, what she went through is expected of too many people. (I‘m including all genders of victims here.) 3y
Jennifer3 @Megabooks You are absolutely spot on. My clients who are poor or a minority or both would have had much dire consequences. The fact he was on the swim team made me even angrier because I hate when athletes especially male athletes don‘t get the same consequences as others would have. 3y
Hooked_on_books So true, so true. One can only hope that the chorus of voices like hers gets loud enough to actually bring about change. 🤞🏼 3y
Megabooks @Jennifer3 I can definitely see that with the way athletics have run through your life. Even high school athletes get the same consideration re: Steubenville. 3y
Jennifer3 @Megabooks Yes, and I have to admit I have seen some falsely accused - Duke Lacrosse players and possibly that high school football player in Texas. But I think those are exceptions for sure. 3y
Megabooks @Jennifer3 I was a Duke grad just a few years before the lacrosse case, and I can say there were other factors at play there along the sharp lines of town/gown relations. It wasn‘t the first time prosecutors had gone after someone with strong university ties to play up town sentiment, but it‘s also believable that different men in those circumstances could‘ve acted inappropriately or criminally. 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y
Jennifer3 @Megabooks Yes, I have seen the town/university push and pull at work. And yes, there were definitely others who were at a bare minimum inappropriate but more likely criminal in their behavior. 3y
Megabooks @Hooked_on_books that is my hope as well. I believe victims until soundly proven otherwise, including the lacrosse case until DNA evidence acquitted the men. The burden and difficulties faced by victims for often so little far outweighs what most accused go through. Anyway, I‘m headed to bed. Have a good night, Holly. 💜 3y
kaysworld1 I am glad you picked it it took me a while to read it more because the subject was too close to home. Xxx 3y
Megabooks @kaysworld1 I understand that, and I agree. I put it down and read In the Dream House before I picked it up again. Some parts were very hard. 💜 3y

It seems cliched to say that this was a tough listen/read. It needs to be. Miller writes in an eloquent, mature manner regarding a major injustice. She writes of her assault, the later trial and the years long struggle of being a victim. Her story is needed. She brings a voice and power to victims around the world. I applaud her strength and bravery.

This is a real, full, human story about a person with a full life who was also the victim of a horrible crime. It‘s nothing like anything I read in the media coverage and something I wish all victims were able to have. Her excellent writing fully humanizes the survivor‘s perspective and shines a light on all the ways our justice system fails victims of sexual violence. If that bothers you, #vote. If you‘ve read Chanel‘s victim impact statement about her sexual assault then you‘ll know exactly what to expect here. It‘s well written, detailing everything she went through, not just the assault either but the awful treatment of the justice system. It made me so angry but this never felt depressing. There‘s no self pity, just quiet dignity. This is a really good memoir. #shesaid #scarathlon2020 #teamslaughter #truecrime 167 points

mjtwo I agree. Her dignity is inspiring. 4y

29 September - 2 October 2020 (audiobook)
This was a strong and moving memoir. Chanel told her story powerfully and forcefully. Her experience in the court system rang true, as did her criticism and urges to hold the system and its proponents accountable for its/their treatment of sexual assault victims. Again, I appreciated being able to hear this story from the author.

#3Books #thatmadememad

Characters or situations that made me mad with helplessness. We shouldn‘t have to live in a world where these could happen. 💔

I‘ve been wanting to read Know My Name since it came out @Cathythoughts , likewise Sixteen Trees. I‘m really looking forward to both of them. And thanks for the 🍫 too.

@Birdsong28 - Amy Byler gets so many rave reviews on here - I can‘t wait to read it. And the notebook is so cute - I‘ll be able to use it in my new job.

Birdsong28 Glad you like the book and that you can make use of the notebook 😊😘📚📖 4y

Today‘s card is about breaththrough, mental clarity and future successes. I‘ve picked Chanel Miller‘s story because it represents the healing process following an assault. She shared her story and takes back her power and identity. After great struggle and isolation she manages to find a way forward in her life that feels meaningful and rewarding. #tarottakeover

An incredible memoir and insight into the gruesome Stanford rape case. Written in a beautiful, poetic language, Chanel explicitly describes the case, her life, and the mental thought process of trauma as a person who has gone through trauma. Plus this was my first venture into the audiobook world, and Chanel herself has read this book so definitely acts as a bonus.
