I can think of only three times in my life that I immediately restarted a book I just finished because I did not want it to end. I'll tag those books in the comments.

Let me introduce you to the fourth book. It is one of the best short story collections I have read, and let me tell you, I have a thing for short stories.

Clare-Dragonfly I was late to work last week (thankfully I have a flexible schedule) because I randomly picked up The Refrigerator Monologues from the shelf and started rereading bits. 5y

Bailedbailed

I am so conflicted.

I adore Catherynne Valente. She is one of my do-not-read-reviews-just-immediately-begin-the-book authors. Her style and verbiage and aesthetic are totally my thing.

BUT. I just can't with this book right now. Yes, I am in a reading slump. Yes, I am having trouble with focus. But no, this is too much. The prose is just too pleased with itself. This is so Douglas Adams that I miss what I loved most about Catherynne Valente.

silentrequiem I'm struggling with this book right now too. I'd actually say she out-Douglas Adams Douglas Adams. 6y
KCorter @silentrequiem Exactly! It is absurd, but not in a palatable way. 6y
silentrequiem @KCorter Valente is very hit or miss for me. She's such a style chameleon. But for some reason she's an insta-buy or read.for me too. 6y

Soubhiville I didn‘t like this one at all. 6y
Evaine I tried last year and had to bail. I agree with you that the prose is too pleased with itself. It became quite tiresome rather quickly. I was disappointed. 6y
Clare-Dragonfly I completely agree. Normally I love Valente, but I skimmed about half this book. 6y

Okay, everyone. I am in charge of deciding which book my book club reads in January. I want to start the year strong!

Which was the best and/or your favorite book of 2018?
OR
Which book do you think would be appropriate to read at the beginning of a new year?
OR
Which book started the best discussion in your own book club?

KarenUK My book club‘s best discussions were for This Must Be the place by Maggie O‘Farrell, Swimming Lessons by Claire Fuller and All the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryan Greenwood. 6y
KarenUK Also, I read and loved The Wife by Meg Wolitzer which would be a fun January read, as it‘s pretty much guaranteed that Glenn Close will be nominated for a best Actress Oscar for her role in the movie adaptation.... 6y
Macnjen How about “I Am I Am I am” by Maggie O‘Farrell? Thought provoking for sure. 6y

Oh my goodness, Daphne du Maurier is one of my new favorites. This collection was PERFECT.

Wry humor, haunting narrative, and exceptionally flawed characters have all come together to create stories that feel so very real yet so very strange.

For fans of Agatha Christie and Shirley Jackson. I know now that I have finally read something other than The Birds, I can consider du Maurier among the best of the best. I feel a reading spree coming on!

Cathythoughts That‘s one great cover 🖤 6y

This was a #BlameaItOnLitsy read. I had never even heard of Otessa Moshfegh until seeing some recent posts by @Lindy.
I have been mourning Shirley Jackson after finishing the last of her stories, but I think I've found her contemporary! This will be an author to watch. I devoured this book in less than a day. It seems like hearing the story of a woman try to sleep her life away would be boring, but it was anything but.

(Full review on Goodreads)
