Carley Wells is not fond of reading, so her parents commission a book to be written for her that she's sure to love. However, Carley loves Hunter Cay, who drowns himself in booze, Vicodin, and F. Scott Fitzgerald.

I found this cute little bookshelf/lamp at a thrift store for just a few dollars!
Maybe it will inspire me to control my library loans to only what can fit on this shelf...

GirlMeetsBook One can only dream. I have a shelf that my cousin hand carved for my grandma; it‘s expandable, and I even outgrew that. 😂 (edited) 13mo

Okay, everyone. I am in charge of deciding which book my book club reads in January. I want to start the year strong!

Which was the best and/or your favorite book of 2018?
OR
Which book do you think would be appropriate to read at the beginning of a new year?
OR
Which book started the best discussion in your own book club?

KarenUK My book club‘s best discussions were for This Must Be the place by Maggie O‘Farrell, Swimming Lessons by Claire Fuller and All the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryan Greenwood. 14mo
KarenUK Also, I read and loved The Wife by Meg Wolitzer which would be a fun January read, as it‘s pretty much guaranteed that Glenn Close will be nominated for a best Actress Oscar for her role in the movie adaptation.... 14mo
Macnjen How about “I Am I Am I am” by Maggie O‘Farrell? Thought provoking for sure. 14mo
See All 9 Comments
LeeRHarry Best book of the year was the tagged book - lots of discussion! 😊 14mo
CouronneDhiver This one was really excellent. It could lead to great discussions about societal expectations: 14mo
Prairiegirl_reading I read The Snow Child in January last year. While I was snowed in. Great winter read. 14mo
Amandajoy I can‘t decide if this is a better January or December read. 14mo

Interesting article from @BookRiot. Even though I have dozens of unread books on my own bookshelves, I still find myself at the library every week. What do you all think of this system?

WhatDeeReads Seems like a solid system. But it‘s not as simple as the author make it seem. My moods just vary so drastically. I don‘t think I can manage it. 2y
2BR02B Oh man, I have the exact same issue: every month I buy new releases I'm really stoked about, and put in library holds for new releases I'm just moderately interested in. Then the holds come in, float to the top of the priority stack, and I end up reading more books I'm lukewarm about than books I'm genuinely excited to read. I might do a trial run of this system, and see if it works for me. 2y
Copwithabook My wife made me put my unread books on a different shelf. She told me I had too many (this will shock you- it was less than two dozen!) and I couldn‘t buy more till I dwindled down that pile. I‘m reading as fast as I can!! 2y

"Later, she'd be a girl you'd want to hang out with for an entire story, a girl you could love."

KCorter I was starting to think I was the only person who has read this book! Did you like it?! 3y
HappilyEverKrafter @KCorter I was first sucked in by the title! At first I wasn't sure I liked it, but as I got into it - and as I reflected on it after I read it - I realized I liked it a lot. It's hard to explain! 3y
KCorter @AnnawhoisMagic I bought it because of the title too! The cover is super cute too. I know what you mean. That's how I felt about it too. It was a fun, easy read. It has really stayed with me though. I think about the characters so often. They were so well-developed. It was a solid little story. 3y

Jumping on the bandwagon by calculating how long it will take to complete my #TBR. http://www.readitforward.com/tbr-time/

I definitely thought it would take much more time to read all the books on my list, but 15 years still seems daunting. I need to prioritize and possibly clean up my list! #ReadItForward #TBRcalculator

TheBookStacker I have cleaned up my list 4.5 stars and higher (amazon reviews) 3y
KCorter That's a good idea, @TheBookStacker. I also have every book in a series listed, which is probably bloating the numbers. 3y

For @Kalalalatja's #BookishWouldYouRather

1. Does reading mass market paperbacks count? I love to collect hardbacks, but you can't beat the portability of a mass market.
2. As much as I enjoy rereads... there are too many books in the world to just reread the same ones!
3. Buy. I love looking at my book collection.
4. Ugh. Same cover.
5. LOTR!
6. 500+ pages! "You can't get a cup of tea big enough or a book long enough to suit me." C. S. Lewis

Kalalalatja I see your point about the portability of a mass market paperback, but I have always found them too small and compact 😄 3y
LeahBergen Nope. No mass markets for me! 😂 3y
Cortg I agree with all your answers EXCEPT, library books. I'm too cheap to buy books and I don't like dusting. 3y
See All 6 Comments
Heretherebedragons @Cortg Same here. I don't have the money to read all the books I want to read. 3y
Verity If I got to pick the 25 I could cope with that easier than never being able to reread my favourites again. And I'm paperback over hardback too - hardbacks are so much less portable. 3y
Gissy I'm a hardcover lover too! 3y

Sometimes I can't even keep track of all the books I want to read... even when they are staring out at me from the bookshelf every day! So @acorter and I just made TBR Jars. We filled the jars with scraps of paper with the books on our TBR. Next time I am at a loss of what to read, I just need to select a book from the jar.
I have to admit I was tempted to put in a paper with a black spot to stand for Shirley Jackson.

KCorter Credit to @DGRachel for the idea! 3y

KCorter @Readage How to Buy a Love of Reading, right? I bought it on a whim at a thrift store because of the cute title. It has a fun premise, interesting characters, and some memorable moments. It isn't high literature or anything, but I found it enjoyable. I would definitely recommend it. :) 3y

Serotonin That's a good idea 💡 👍 3y
