"I believe the nicest and sweetest days are not those on which anything very splendid or wonderful or exciting happens but just those that bring simple little pleasures, following one another softly, like pearls slipping off a string." The second book in the beloved Anne of Green Gables series teaches the lesson of growing up and the transition from being a child who is invested into to an adult who now can invest in others. #52challenge

This was my first time reading this and it is SO different from the Megan Follows version I grew up watching! I loved it and all the sweet (and not-so-sweet) people of Avonlea.

IndoorDame I just finished this one too! Love!!!! 12mo
TheAromaofBooks I love this one!! Anne of Island is next and it may be my favorite of the series. 12mo
lauraisntwilder @IndoorDame I saw that! You have that gorgeous Sourcebooks edition. I may switch to those for Windy Poplars, since Simon & Schuster only did the first three with covers like this. 12mo
lauraisntwilder @TheAromaofBooks Oh yay! I'm looking forward to it! I'm hoping to read them all this year and maybe the Emily books, too. 12mo
IndoorDame @lauraisntwilder the sourcebooks covers are awesome! And the paperback I got was nice quality 12mo

1. Justina Ireland isn‘t strictly a middle grade author, but my favorite MG and YA books of the last few years have both been by her.

2. Horseback riding, reading, painting

3. Girls had to wear skirts or dresses on Fridays, teachers specified the color binders you had to buy for their classes, textbooks were supposed to go home every night regardless of whether you had assignments in them or not

#MiddleGradeMarch @megnews @sblbooks

sblbooks I read Ophie's ghost, and enjoyed it. That rule about the skirt seems backward, looks like you should at least have Fridays off, lol. 13mo
IndoorDame @sblbooks it (and most of the more ridiculous dress code rules) had to do with it being a religious school. Like the one that allowed skirts to be several inches shorter than girls shorts 13mo

sblbooks Sabbath begins on Friday l...now I understand. I still don't understand the one that says, skirts can be several inches shorter than shorts. What? Smh 13mo
IndoorDame @sblbooks none of it really made any “sense” in the real world. Just a gross combination of incentives and requirements for girls to behave “traditionally” 13mo

Another historical reading list… my mom wrote this one up, in October 1991. I DO remember a lot of these—so many favorites here! Anne of Avonlea & Anne of the Island, George MacDonald‘s Light Princess, Just Like Always (I remember LOVING that book), and some favorites by Jean Little. And I can‘t forget Miss Bianca and Jean Fritz! October 1991 was a good reading month.☺️ Also note how my mom got tired of adding up # of pages & just wrote “lots” 😂

LeahBergen I love this! 🥰 2y

I have been re-visiting an old friend at night while reading my Kindle - Anne Shirley 😊

I treasure the old copies of the books my grandmother gave me as a child and couldn't post a review without including a shot of that beautiful, pink, vintage cover.

The next book is Anne of the Island. I don't think I ever went any further in the series after that, so I am really looking forward to it!

I loved this reread. My adult mind picked up on plot elements ten year old me glossed over. I found myself loving Marilla in this novel. She became more of a person to me. Her sense of humor is dry and wry- which always makes me laugh. I love how Montgomery really developed her as a character in this novel vs. the first one.

The seasonal themes were lovely to read as well. A favorite series.

Today‘s mood. #suchajonahday. Most things have seemed to gone wrong today. The one I thought would go wrong, didn‘t; I was in and out of outpatient lab appointment @ the hospital within 20 minutes (last week I had to wait close to an hour for my lab appointment). And to top it off I got put in Twitter jail until 5 pm tomorrow.

melissajayne @TheBookHippie so much went wrong: my mom lost my chemo appointment on her phone; the charging cable for tablet won‘t work, ChaptersIndigo lost my items for two of my swaps (and I had paid for rush delivery) and I had to go to the Coles store to get books for those swaps (fortunately it was only two books). 3-30 Oct 2021 (audiobook)
I thought this may be the last in the series Beatrix and I would listen to but she is as much of a romantic as I am so we have to continue until Anne marries Gilbert, apparently.
Trix was shocked that after one year of college, Anne could then be teaching at 15 - times have obviously changed a great deal.
Davey amused Beatrix greatly - I had forgotten what a funny little character he is.

A lovely #audiobook production of the second Anne book. It's been a long time since I reread this one and I was pleasantly (and not so pleasantly) surprised by what I'd forgotten. Miss Lavender and Paul Irving are delightful, discussions of corporeal punishment were horrifying, Mr Harrison is kind of a jerk, and Gilbert is 😍 (although there's not enough of him). Some of Anne's antics, like falling through the roof of a hen house, are very funny.

Perhaps after all romance did not come into one's life with pomp & blare...perhaps it crept to one's side like an old friend" Anne + Gilbert ?

Can I tell you that I'm still kicking myself for taking this long to get to this series?
From the first book to this one, it's so weird seeing how much Anne has grown, and yet she's only sixteen here.
She sounds so much older than I could have ever been at that age, so I had to sit back and reflect a little about that and remember that where I was at sixteen was a different world from where the author has placed Anne.
Thanks @SerialReader !

suvata I‘ve had Serial Reader for a couple of years and, I swear, I‘ve only read one book on it. I just kind of forgot about it. LM Montgomery might be just the ticket to bring me back. Thanks for the reminder. 3y

Mr. Harrison found out about the #Improvement Society and was disposed to approve of it.

"That's right. Go ahead. There's lots of room for improvement in this settlement . . . and in the people too." . . . “Who are you going to tackle first?"

"We are not going to meddle with PEOPLE . . . it is only PLACES we mean to improve," said Anne, in a dignified tone. She rather suspected that Mr. Harrison was making fun of the project. #QuotsyJan21

I started rereading Anne of Avonlea today, which means I'm reading my final 3 books of 2020! Once I finish these 3, I'll be at my goal of 95 books for the year. My original goal was 90, so I'm pleased. It's been a great mix of getting stuff that's been lingering on my TBR done and picking up books on a whim this year. I intend to keep up a similar pattern in 2021. If I finish these 3 quickly, I'll start a big book that'll last me to 2021.

It was so much fun revisiting this for the #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead. I don‘t know how long it‘s been since I last read it & I‘d forgotten so much. It feels a bit scattered: lots of little happenings, but not much of a plot arc for most of the characters. I missed the deeper look at both Anne & Marilla‘s inner lives that we got in the first book. I do so love the Miss Lavendar storyline, though—that‘s the strongest part of this book, I think.

RaimeyGallant I can't remember a lot either. I'm from Prince Edward Island, so it's shameful on my part. ;) 3y

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead - Anne of Avonlea discussion part 3!

I asked similar questions about AoGG, but I‘ll ask them again here:
3a. What main themes/ideas did you notice throughout the book?
3b. What will stay with you the most from reading Anne of Avonlea? Any new realizations, quotes you loved, etc.?
3c. Is there anything you feel this text calling you to do? Something Anne or another character has inspired you to think about or act on?

EclecticBookLover This is my first time reading any of the books and I just love everything so far. They are well written (though they do not fit with modern views), but the still have a timelessness about them and a refreshing quality. I love that Anne has grown and matured, but kept her sense of wonder and imagination. 3y
Clare-Dragonfly I can‘t think of anything that will stick with me. I feel like this book was very light and mostly slipped through my mind. Great for reading before bed! 3y
See All 6 Comments
Jerdencon I don‘t know what will stick except maybe for Miss Lavendar calling all her maids by the same name! Overall the book just gives a warm feeling when you read it... it‘s calming in a crazy world. 3y
AnneCecilie I think both this one and Green Gables, has me focusing and find happiness in the little things in life. 3y
quietjenn I think the text speaks a lot to maturing, while also remaining true to your core self and not losing the elements that make you intrinsically you, even if you necessarily temper some urges a bit. And also about the fellowship you find in community. It's been a wonderful experience to share the books with you all. 3y

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead - Anne of Avonlea discussion part 2!

2a. What do you think of the new characters introduced in this second book: Mr. Harrison, Davy & Dora, Paul Irving, Miss Lavendar? Which is your favorite, and why?
2b. How do the new characters add to Anne‘s story? What purpose do you feel they serve within the narrative?
2c. What scenes or subplots did you enjoy the most in this book? (...MISS LAVENDAR for the win.)

LeahBergen I hadn‘t reread this one in YEARS and forgot so much! Miss Lavendar was completely awesome and I forgot the annoyingness of those twins. 😆 3y
BarbaraJean @LeahBergen Seriously, me too!! I had completely forgotten about Mr. Harrison and Ginger, the AVIS, and Uncle Abe's storm... I don't even know how long it's been since I picked this one up. I remember finding Davy hilarious, but he was a bit too much on this re-read. And I'm so over the prim-and-proper Dora!! Miss Lavendar was even better than I remembered, though... 💜 3y
See All 14 Comments
BarbaraJean Something I hadn't noticed before are the parallels between Miss Lavendar and Anne: both have a quick temper, both are apt to hold grudges... Miss Lavendar not being ready to forgive Stephen yet reminded me SO much of Anne with Gilbert after he rescues her at the bridge and she refuses to forgive him. I almost see a little cautionary tale for Anne under Miss Lavendar/Stephen Irving's story. 3y
LeahBergen Yes, she is very much like Anne, isn‘t she? 3y
rubyslippersreads The twins are obnoxious. 😄 3y
EclecticBookLover I love Miss Lavender and Mr. Harrison. Two worthy additions to Avonlea. I loved Paul Irving, he was so sweet and I love how he and Anne bonded. Davy was obnoxious, but I didn't mind him too much. 3y
Hooked_on_books @LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads I am SO happy to see you both agree about the twins! I was reading, thinking most people are probably charmed by them and I found them to be dreadful. They deserve Mrs Lynde! 😈 3y
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraJean I absolutely agree with the parallels between Ms Lavender and Anne. I really liked that story line and their friendship. I also liked the addition of Mr Harrison, though not at first. As his story developed, I appreciated his quirkiness. And I loved the AVIS parts. 3y
Clare-Dragonfly Looking back I think my favorite is Dora! She‘s such a mystery. Davy is a child who makes sense, but how did Dora get to be so compliant and proper? What happened to her before she came to Green Gables??? All the other new characters were fun. I loved Miss Lavendar though I found it hard to tolerate the spelling of her name. I want to be like her when I grow up, without the weird inability to see separate people in a set of sisters. 3y
Clare-Dragonfly I was a little disappointed in one thing—I shipped Mr. Harrison and Mrs. Lynde and never expected a Mrs. Harrison to show up 😂 3y
Jerdencon Definitely Miss Lavendar for a win! But I don‘t think Mr. Harrison needed a wife - I liked him grumpy. As for the twins - they seem too stereotypical for me - quiet, obedient girl and rambunctious boy... 3y
AnneCecilie I loved Davy and his “I want to know”comments. I actually see a little bit of Anne in him. Anne also have/ had a tendency of getting in unexpected trouble and thinking things through. We this both in this one and the first one. 3y
quietjenn I very much enjoyed the new adult characters - and agree with @Jerdencon that Mr. Harrison didn't need a wife! I maybe liked him better with his parrot! But he and both Miss Lavendar were great and it was nice watching Anne work her way into their lives. I don't think I was quite so irked by the kids as others, but think that a little goes a long way in *all* of their cases. 3y

So sorry to be posting these so late in the day! Weekday discussions are a challenge! #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

1a. How do you feel Anne of Avonlea compares to Anne of Green Gables? Which did you enjoy more?
1b. Anne is “grown up” and teaching school: where do you see her growing maturity in this book? In what ways is she the same old Anne?
1c. What changes or growth do you see in the other characters? (Marilla, Mrs. Lynde, Diana…others?)

LeahBergen AOGG will always be my favourite of the series, I think. You just can‘t beat that first introduction to a quirky little character who only wants to belong somewhere. 3y
BarbaraJean I saw the very subtle thread of romance running through the book as one of the signs of Anne growing up, even though Anne herself seems to have much the same perspective on romance (for herself) as she did when she was younger! There are so many sweet little inklings of romance, from Diana‘s engagement to Miss Lavendar's romance 💜, to that lovely passage with Gilbert at the end. 3y
See All 11 Comments
EclecticBookLover A &B I thought it was just as good. I loved that Anne still had her imagination and positive out look, but it was nice to see her mature as well. I also think Anne has learned to consider things a bit more and doesn't rush in as much. C. It was nice to see Marilla mellow out a bit (I if it can be called that!). 3y
Hooked_on_books The first book of as much more of a smooth narrative, whereas this one was quite episodic. If you separated it out a little more, it would almost be short stories rather than a novel. But it still works. I think Anne seems more purposeful now whereas she was a bit flighty when younger. 3y
Clare-Dragonfly I definitely liked Green Gables more. Maybe it‘s nostalgia? But I felt like this one was a lot more scattered and didn‘t have a storyline, just a bunch of stuff that happened that Anne was tangentially related to. 3y
Jerdencon I enjoyed this one about as much as the first one. I love that Anne is still herself even with the responsibilities she has. Her childish wonder with the world has not gone away. 3y
Jerdencon I see Diana as changing - caught between being young and growing up. 3y
quietjenn I loved them both, but I was struck by how much I remembered from GG and how little from this one - although I'm sure watching adaptations played a role in that. I think Anne is very true to her younger self, but has learned to be a little more thoughtful and reserved. And not so entirely dismissive of society! And yet, she is still firmly herself. I loved a slightly more chill Marilla, but still very much miss Matthew. 3y

This was an interesting installment in the Anne series. A bit choppy, silly in places, saccharine in others, but the storyline with Miss Lavender just pops. We do get a much better feel for greater Avonlea in this one, which I enjoyed. But that's wrapped up as of yesterday, I'm going to catch up with Anne tonight (can't wait to get back to Miss Lavendar!), and I plan to be ready for the discussion on Wednesday! BarbaraJean @quietjenn I went to catch up last night and the next thing I knew I'd finished the book. 😆 @EclecticBookLover @Bkwrm7 @meghathecloud @Clare-Dragonfly @dottie.floating.on.words I kept up with my daily Anne all through the first book, but fell behind several times with this one! Glad you're all catching up and will be glad to have you join in the discussion when you can. (edited) 3y
BarbaraJean @Hooked_on_books Oh, that's a great reminder--I had forgotten that these are public domain! So many free options online! @LeahBergen I was wondering if you were already halfway through Anne of the Island... 😉 @TheAromaofBooks @Jerdencon Looking forward to having you join the discussion! @MB1994 You are so welcome to join in! We've been doing each book chapter-a-day, with a wrap-up discussion at the end. I'll be sure to tag you for future posts! 3y

Perhaps, after all, romance did not come into one‘s life with pomp and blare, like a gay knight riding down, perhaps it crept to one‘s side like an old friend through quiet ways, perhaps it revealed itself in seeming prose, until some sudden shaft of illumination flung athwart its pages betrayed the rhythm and the music; perhaps... perhaps... love unfolded naturally out of a beautiful friendship,

While Anne was not beautiful in any strictly defined sense of the world she possessed a certain evasive charm and distinction of appearance that left beholders with a pleasurable sense of satisfaction in that softly rounded girlhood of hers, with all its strongly felt potentialities. Those who knew Anne best, felt, without realizing that they felt it, that her greatest attraction was the aura of possibility surrounding her ... the power of future

“‘Rachel will be left pretty lonely if anything happens to him, with all her children settled out west, except Eliza in town; and she doesn‘t like her husband.‘
Marilla‘s pronouns slandered Eliza, who was very fond of her husband.”

🤣 I do love a good grammar joke. #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

...they found a road leading into the heart of acres of glimmering beech & maple woods, which were all in a wondrous glow of flame & gold, lying in a great purple stillness & peace. “It‘s as if the year were kneeling to pray in a vast cathedral of mellow stained light, isn‘t it?” said Anne dreamily.

I 💜 Montgomery‘s nature descriptions! And I love Anne‘s image of the year kneeling to pray, with the woods as a cathedral.

‘What makes you behave so this morning?‘
‘Maybe I got out of the wrong side of the bed,‘ suggested Davy. ‘Milty Boulter says if you do that things are bound to go wrong with you all day. His grandmother told him. But which is the right side? And what are you to do when your bed‘s against the wall? I want to know.‘

(I just love Davy‘s questions. It‘s not easy being 7 and wanting to know all this things 😊)

BarbaraJean I love his questions, too! He has some great ones! Although I can imagine his repeated “I want to know” getting a bit tiresome to the adults having to answer...😂 3y
AnneCecilie @BarbaraJean Yes, I can see that too, but that might also have something to do with them being hard questions to answer. 3y
