Lilac Girls
Lilac Girls: A Novel | Martha Hall Kelly
Inspired by the life of a real World War II heroine, this powerful debut novel reveals an incredible story of love, redemption, and terrible secrets that were hidden for decades. New York socialite Caroline Ferriday has her hands full with her post at the French consulate and a new love on the horizon. But Carolines world is forever changed when Hitlers army invades Poland in September 1939and then sets its sights on France. An ocean away from Caroline, Kasia Kuzmerick, a Polish teenager, senses her carefree youth disappearing as she is drawn deeper into her role as courier for the underground resistance movement. In a tense atmosphere of watchful eyes and suspecting neighbors, one false move can have dire consequences. For the ambitious young German doctor, Herta Oberheuser, an ad for a government medical position seems her ticket out of a desolate life. Once hired, though, she finds herself trapped in a male-dominated realm of Nazi secrets and power. The lives of these three women are set on a collision course when the unthinkable happens and Kasia is sent to Ravensbrck, the notorious Nazi concentration camp for women. Their stories cross continentsfrom New York to Paris, Germany, and Polandas Caroline and Kasia strive to bring justice to those whom history has forgotten. In Lilac Girls, Martha Hall Kelly has crafted a remarkable novel of unsung women and their quest for love, freedom, and second chances. It is a story that will keep readers bonded with the characters, searching for the truth, until the final pages.Advance praise for Lilac Girls Inspired by actual events and real people, Martha Hall Kelly has woven together the stories of three women during World War II that reveal the bravery, cowardice, and cruelty of those days. This is a part of historywomens historythat should never be forgotten.Lisa See,New York Timesbestselling author ofChina Dolls This is the kind of book I wish I had the courage to writea profound, unsettling, and thoroughly captivating look at sisterhood through the dark lens of the Holocaust. WWII novel from the perspective of three women:
-a New York socialite (privileged, naive, well-meaning)
-a Polish teenager (long-suffering, innocent, inner strength)
-a German doctor (traumatized, strict, cold, horrible)
Spans from right before war breaks out through the years after, following characters during hardships and how they cope after. Based on actual people. A bit long and heavy handed, but worthwhile. I read this for IRL book club.

⭐️⭐️ Unfortunate timing for this one. Both of my book clubs chose historical war fiction in the same month, and though one was Cold War and this one is WWII, they started running together in my head. I usually steer clear of WWII fiction because the market is so oversaturated. Tell me something different. Idk. Give me facts. I want the nonfiction this story is based on. And for Pete‘s sake, this sucker could‘ve been 100 pages shorter. #bookclub

AvidReader25 Completely agree on this one. These WWII historical fiction books are all blending together. 2y
merelybookish So many books could lose 50+ pages and be better for it. 2y
melissajayne Disagree with you on this book. If you read a paper copy of the book, there is additional information at the end of the book and a bunch of photos that show the actual women that the story is based off of. 2y

SamAnne I wasn't a real fan of this one either. 2y
britt_brooke @melissajayne There was info at the end of the audio as well. If the book had been shorter (it really went on forever, IMO) or maybe Herta had gotten as much face time as the other ladies, I might‘ve felt differently. I‘m happy you liked it, though! 2y
Cinfhen Preach!! WWII books do start to blend together- it‘s a genre I try to stay away from although sometimes a special book will cross my path. This was one such book 2y

Did anyone else pick up the "A Point In Time" collection through Amazon Prime?

7 short stories by well-known authors.

I read "Naomi's Gift" by the author of "Lilac Girls" last night.

It was SO GOOD!

A riveting story about a baby born in a concentration camp.

Can't wait to read the next one tonight ?

Yesterday I visited the Bellamy-Ferriday House & Garden in Bethlehem, CT with a friend. Our tour guide was amazing- incredibly detailed in his fountain of knowledge about both resident families.Joseph Bellamy, grandson of Jonathan Edwards, was a minister who opened the first school of theology & school of law in CT.The Ferriday‘s acquired the property in 1912.

kspenmoll Martha Hall Kelly spent years of historical & biographical research, then fictionalized the extraordinary lives of Caroline Ferriday, Eliza Ferriday, & Georgeanna Woolsey, in each of these 3 novels. The author is a fascinating speaker as well- I went to her author talk & book signing when The Lilac Girls was published. 2y

It took a while for me to get “into” the book. I did like both Kasia‘s and Herta‘s stories. All the stories skipped forward in time fairly quickly, and I would have liked for it not to skip so much time so fast, as I felt like things got missed. I could have done without Caroline‘s story altogether, and definitely without Paul. Author‘s note: Herta and Caroline were real people. Kasia and her sister were also fictional but based on real sisters.

I‘m not sure exactly how I feel about this book. It‘s well written, an interesting story based on real people and events. I guess it‘s that I have a lot of ambivalence about how it ends. The best description I can think of is “messy,” but then real life often is messy. It‘s a reminder that there aren‘t always clear resolutions, and mixed emotions emotions are real. This is probably the most realistic WWII novel I‘ve read and I recommend.

It is tragic that the horrors of WWII are so expansive — in scope & scale — that even after studying the era in relative depth for my history degree & reading many historically inspired novels, I can still encounter new aspects to shock & repulse me. Yet the experiences of the Ravensbruck Rabbits did just that.

All the same, the book — fiction, with the added punch & power of being based largely on fact — is moving, fascinating, & worth a read.

melissajayne One of my favourite historical fiction novels! 3y

I finished it! Given the subject matter, I had trouble finishing this one but I am glad I stuck with it. The story of a real life NY socialite who helped the Ravensbruck Rabbits, a group of prisoners who were experimented on. Told in alternating viewpoints, the one that most affected me was that of Dr. Herta Oberheuser, who performed many of the operations. I tend to prefer non fiction to historical fiction but I enjoyed this, it was well done.

The start of spring semester with Grad school made this a slow read unfortunately. However, I am so glad I finally picked this one up, after a friend made a good case for it in her recommendation to me 💙 I loved how the author based this off of real women, and thorough research. 😔The fact of the evil that humans are capable of,& even when putting horrific cruelties put upon other human beings they will still hold firm to the belief they are⬇️

Emily92Bibliophile ... right and just in their actions. No matter the amount of pain and suffering they intentionally caused on other human beings, seeing them as expendable . Sounds familiar to our current political, government and country climate. 4y

⭐⭐⭐⭐

A very compelling historical fiction set in 1939. We get a look into the lives of 3 very different women when Hitler's army invades Poland. Caroline is in New York, Kasia is in Poland, and Herta is in Germany.
Any book dealing with concentration camps is difficult for me to absorb. Knowing all those courageous souls were tortured, punished, and starved is maddening. I liked how this book is set up and switches to differing points of view.
