Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing
Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing | Marie Kondo
This #1"New York Times" best-selling guide to decluttering your home from Japanese cleaning consultant Marie Kondo takes readers step-by-step through her revolutionary KonMari Method for simplifying, organizing, and storing. Despite constant efforts to declutter your home, do papers still accumulate like snowdrifts and clothes pile up like a tangled mess of noodles? Japanese cleaning consultant Marie Kondo takes tidying to a whole new level, promising that if you properly simplify and organize your home once, you ll never have to do it again. Most methods advocate a room-by-room or little-by-little approach, which doom you to pick away at your piles of stuff forever. The KonMari Method, with its revolutionary category-by-category system, leads to lasting results. In fact, none of Kondo s clients have lapsed (and she still has a three-month waiting list). With detailed guidance for determining which items in your house spark joy (and which don t), this international bestseller featuring Tokyo s newest lifestyle phenomenon will help you clear your clutter and enjoy the unique magic of a tidy home and the calm, motivated mindset it can inspire."

Professional organizers will tell you not to keep single socks. I learned the hard way that as soon as you throw out a mateless sock, you will find the missing mate. I also like to make pairs #oddsocks if they‘re a similar weight. #daysdevotedto

Suet624 Yes! The second one always comes a-calling. 1mo
MatchlessMarie I made a bulletin board with the headline Tosey Wosies Most Wanted where I pin my singles till they find their match.. like sock jail 😅 1mo
lil1inblue I just keep a basket of unmated socks. As long as they're the same length and weight, I'll wear them. 😂 1mo

lil1inblue @MatchlessMarie I love this. 😍 1mo
Susanita @MatchlessMarie @lil1inblue I like those ideas. I have a little basket too for mateless socks, whether from holes in the toes or getting lost in the laundry. I‘ve also started washing them in a mesh bag to prevent the latter. 1mo
BarbaraBB I have a what we call ‘lonely socks basket‘ in which I collect all single socks. Once every few months I sort them out and sometimes a pair can be reunited 🤣 1mo
Anna40 Funny. I mostly never find the missing sock partner. Seinfeld had a funny joke in one of his recent standups about the phenomenon of the lonely sock 😊 1mo

Eventually it will get to the stage where this becomes a cosy book nook and set up for video games. It's a work in progress, so have a semi-shelfie!!!!

Or this can be like Where's Wally?

Can you find:

A) 2 dragons and a dinosaur

B) Some cumbersome art books that won't fit on my shelf

C) Illumicrate coasters!

D) A Pokemon terrarium and a Pokemon

E) Some epic tunes

F) LEGO that needs assembling

G) A bunny and an angry adipocyte

Per request, here is my sock drawer. A couple pairs are in the laundry (and one pair is on my feet), but you get the idea. Inspired by the only sentence in my Twitter profile: Marie Kondo would love my sock drawer but hate my bookshelves.

My TBR list on Goodreads was not (& is not) bringing me joy. 😅

Today, I committed to tidying it up. I‘ve already deleted more than 70 books! This is going to be a JOB, for sure (I‘ve been using GR since 2012), but I can‘t wait for the end result.

I also downloaded StoryGraph. I‘m not sure about it yet but I like that it‘s not Amazon-owned, of course. If you use it (or something else!) to track your reading, I‘d love to hear about it! 🖤

monalyisha I think part of my new process is going to be looking at what I‘ve added to my TBR that year — maybe once halfway through the year in June, & then again in December — to evaluate each title & decide if I really want to read it, or if it was an impulse-add. (edited) 3y
SeaToSkyes I thought I had a lot at 1600+! Lol I still used GR and also started using Storygraph. I do like some of the features of Storygraph more, but for some reason I can't pull away from GR. 3y
RaeLovesToRead I keep trying to get rid of books on my GR TBR but the app doesn't actually seem to delete them! I'm sure there are books on there I've tidied away, like, 5 times 😅😅 I need to sit down at a computer and KonMari them properly! 😄 3y
See All 10 Comments
CampbellTaraL Oh hey, I started TBR clear out recently too! So many were contextual based on where my head was at the time I added, but after a long while had passed, I didn't remember why I wanted to read a lot of them to begin with. 😬 As for Storygraph, I really like the recommendations and review/tracking system (hides the rating), but I'm still using GR for reasons I don't know why. 3y
TheAromaofBooks I keep my TBR on a spreadsheet and did a MAJOR purge about a year and a half ago. It took forever, but was well-worth it. I also color-coded titles as I went by genre, so it's really helped me find books already on my TBR when I'm in a “mood“ LOL It's still sitting at better than a thousand books, which I'll freely admit is ridiculous, but I genuinely have gotten more selective about what gets added & staying focused on getting books OFF! 😂 3y
monalyisha @TheAromaofBooks This is heartening! I like the way I‘m able to create custom shelves on Goodreads…that‘s why I may choose to stay on. But I like that you get to color-code with your system! 3y
monalyisha @CampbellTaraL Yes! We‘re in this together! 😅💖 3y
TheAromaofBooks I wasn't on GR when I first started book blogging, which is when I started to really have a TBR - reading other people's reviews meant I suddenly had more books to read than ever! I never had a TBR before that... I would just go to the library & wander around & hope for the best! 😂 So my initial spreadsheet was definitely a lot less selective because I didn't realize at the time that I would not actually ever catch up on reading again LOL 3y
JamieArc I started a StoryGraph account at the start of the year but am having a hard time pulling away from GoodReads as well. I think part of it is that I actually win giveaways, and I‘m just used to it. I‘ll try harder to make StoryGraph my main spot for 2022. 3y
monalyisha @TheAromaofBooks Ha! My first job out of college in 2008 was in a library. I spent *years* going home with tiny strips of paper in my pockets & just hoping against hope that they made it into a journal before they were lost and forgotten. GR was a godsend. 3y

When I picked up this book, I honestly didn't think there would be any truly informative or revolutionary ideas inside. Well, I was wrong! I really enjoyed Kondo's insights and lessons about why we shouldn't always keep mementos; her writing about being stuck in the past and missing who you used to be really touched me. It helped me move on from an old friendship. I do feel lighter, happier for having read this. Now to actually tackle my house!

TiredLibrarian I enjoyed this too, but I thought her advice on books was way off base! 📚 3y
smitedandsmitten @TiredLibrarian I totally understand where you're coming from! I think it's because for people like us, we're total bookworms so every book is special and worthwhile. But I kind of also get it from Kondo's perspective too, ngl 😅 I mean, I'd rather a book be donated and enjoyed by a new audience than sit unloved on a private shelf. 3y

This passage really spoke to me. I've been struggling with making a decision on whether I should get rid of these incredibly sentimental letters I own. They're from a former friend of almost 15 years. We got off on bad terms, but I've kept her many letters to me. I think it's time to let go. I get sad thinking about throwing them out, but they don't spark joy. Upon reflection, they've fulfilled their role. Thank you Marie for helping me move on.

One of these days, this place will be a minimalist paradise... one of these days!

#shittyshelfie

P.S. I'm gonna go back to taking extensively curated pictures of the one area I've tidied from now on 😂😂😂

Yuki_Onna Don't hurry, please!!!
My whole room (NOT just the shelves!) and the part of the living room I'm responsible for (i.e. my big bookshelf, sideboard and 'my' part of the couch) look far worse... Far far worse. It got to the point I'm not letting people into my room anymore... 😅
3y
RaeLovesToRead @Yuki_Onna Haha... I've moved back in with my parents and have basically nabbed as much shelf space as I can... one day I'll have everything tidy again! 3y

💌 Happy #SimplicityDay ! I had never heard of it before, and after I looked up the definition I decided to read a few more chapters in this book, and work on this letter purging project again. I got rid of 2 more boxes & found a love letter my grandpa wrote my grandma in WWII.
👚 I read the chapters on clothes and laundry a long time ago and they were, no joke, life-changing.

Eggs Wow 😮Amazing!! 3y
PaperbackPirate @Leftcoastzen I have saved every letter and card since I was a child, and luckily kept them all organized. I‘ve gotten rid of cards that are just signed, letters from friends I don‘t talk to anymore, and letters that don‘t “spark joy.” But I have to read everything first! It‘s fun to reread them, especially the ones from dead family members. Kondo‘s book advice though - hard pass! 😆 3y

🎧 I‘ve owned this book since it came out. Why did I wait so long to read it? Great common sense information for those of us who have too many things in our lives & don‘t know what to do with the things we need to keep. Good narration. I will definitely return to this book for motivation/inspiration! I can‘t believe I waited so long. Of course there are some ideas I will ignore (leave my book alone LOL) but plenty of helpful hints! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I join @Lindy in her estimation that some parts of Kondo‘s life-changing magic are quite funny, without knowing if that was the author‘s intention. I did like it because it supported my anyway already existing feeling of needing to clear out. It did not enlighten me. But I felt it offers impetus even though the general concept is a bit too drawer-fixated. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I don‘t see why it got only 1-star-ratings at my library.

Hope, I tagged the right book. I wasn‘t aware that there are 2 (or even more) books about “magic cleaning”. My library obviously has the second one.

It‘s okay. But pretty much a book about “getting things going”. I know a bit about this method and didn‘t find many insights so far but I really liked Kondo‘s tune of writing.

Before Corona, I had plans to radically clear out some stuff. But since I need assistance, it didn‘t work out until now. 😞

Lindy I found some parts of Kondo‘s life-changing magic quite funny, but I don‘t know if that was the author‘s intention. 🤷‍♀️ 4y

I actively avoided both this book and the Netflix series after seeing the sheer amount of stuff people had and were throwing away. But, when I found the book in a LFL, I decided to give it a try in the hopes that Marie Kondo addresses the issue of overconsumption, how to properly rid your home of unwanted items, and how to avoid falling into the same habits of overconsumption. Unfortunately, she doesn‘t. Full review: https://bit.ly/32oq4LU 📚 2⭐️
