Asylum | Madeleine Roux
Madeleine Roux's New York Times bestselling Asylum is a thrilling and creepy photo-illustrated novel that Publishers Weekly called "a strong YA debut that reveals the enduring impact of buried trauma on a place." Featuring found photographs from real asylums and filled with chilling mystery and page-turning suspense, Asylum is a horror story that treads the line between genius and insanity, perfect for fans of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. For sixteen-year-old Dan Crawford, the New Hampshire College Prep program is the chance of a lifetime. Except that when Dan arrives, he finds that the usual summer housing has been closed, forcing students to stay in the crumbling Brookline Dormformerly a psychiatric hospital. As Dan and his new friends Abby and Jordan start exploring Brookline's twisty halls and hidden basement, they uncover disturbing secrets about what really went on here . . . secrets that link Dan and his friends to the asylum's dark past. Because Brookline was no ordinary mental hospital, and there are some secrets that refuse to stay buried.

FINALLY getting to my October book club book......school has really SLOWED my personal reading....🖤💀🤩

Enchanted_Bibliophile Ooo, I enjoyed the pictures of this one. 1mo
UnidragonFrag I actually wasn't too keen on this one. It was TOO YA for me, if that makes sense. 1mo

KBlackScan Hmmm - I‘m definitely not a fan of YA, but I‘m on like chapter 4 and don‘t find it to be too YA. Hmmm we shall see. That‘s the beauty of book clubs - you read things that you normally wouldn‘t pick up. 1mo
IamIamIam I just snagged this on Amazon for a couple of bucks! I'm interested to see what you think! 3w
KBlackScan Halfway through. I still like so far! Stay tuned. 3w

”Dan walked up the front steps and found himself in a large entrance hall. The enormous chandelier couldn‘t overcome the #darkness caused by all the wood paneling and overstuffed furniture. Through a grand archway across from the entrance, Dan spotted a wide staircase, and halls leading in on either side. Even the students bustling in and out did nothing to dispel the feeling of heaviness.” #QuotsyOct19 #AllHallowsRead #GiveAScaryBook

Finished this book in 3 hours. It is fantastic for its YA horror genre. Would make a good movie with it suspense and creepy coincidences. Perfect read for Halloween. Book 4 for #screamathon @4thhouseontheleft

I don‘t know if it was just because I listened to the audiobook, which wasn‘t well done at all, but the book was really hard to follow and kind of boring.

This was a tough one. I both liked it & was let down a little. The characters felt younger than they were supposed to be (I kept picturing 13/14-year-olds) Just when I started to get sucked in...meh... Maybe I need to read the rest of the books for it all to come together. I am aware this is YA, so that‘s why I‘m not being harsh. I REALLY dig the premise and I was just hoping for more a little more oomph. Dame Agatha has spoiled me...

mydearwatson These books look interesting, but how is its treatment of mental health? The description makes me a little wary, but I think the whole old photograph thing is really cool. 5mo
AshleyHoss820 @mydearwatson They don‘t really go into it. It‘s more of a focus on the former warden and two specific patients that were “criminally insane.” It‘s fairly lacking in details and the end leaves too many questions, for my tastes. 😕🤷🏻‍♀️ 5mo
AshleyHoss820 @mydearwatson I LOVE the found-photographs premise and find it really interesting, which is why loved the Peculiar Children series so much! Have you tried those? (edited) 5mo

I had high hopes for this book. It had potential to be scary but it didn't follow through. It's a teen book but felt more juvenile. The ending was all kinds of crazy, like the author didn't know how to end it or how to even successfully carry it over to the sequel. It'd be a fun read for an 11-13 yr old. 2019 SWON TRC

Despite a lot of negative reviews, I actually rather enjoyed this book. Literary gold? No. However, it‘s a fun and mysterious quick read. It is YA, possibly bordering on Middle Grade. Even so, I had a lot of fun with all the references to psychology, and I‘m also a sucker for haunted asylum stories. I‘ll read the next one.

I enjoyed this but it just wasn't quite 'enough'. Not enough to be scary, not enough to be a thriller. There also wasn't enough explanation; things weren't wrapped up sufficiently for me. I'm going to give the sequel a shot though.

Dan, Abby and Jordan participate in a pre-college program, and their dorm is an old asylum. When they decide to explore a closed wing full of abandoned papers and objects, things get weird. And weirder.

Slightly predictable, but intriguing. Overall, an enjoyable novel that is very easy to read. I would have preferred to see ONLY real pictures in the book instead of some that were made for it. It blurred the line of "real asylum photos" for me.

I generally have no issue with YA (minus ya romance) and read it often. This was so stereotypically YA that it was painful. I ended up skimming a lot hoping that it would get better. It didn't. The pictures were intriguing, but without those this would've been a bail as nothing else would've kept me involved.

My second dnf this week. So disappointed. I‘ve read other Madeleine Roux and they were pretty good so I was really surprised at how awkward and wooden this book was. It was just words on a pages. I felt absolutely nothing. The characters didn‘t exist for me outside this book and the writing style felt amateurish. Too bad.

Bit predictable and very YA, but still a fun read. I wanted more depth and more horror. I'm hoping that the second book will expand on things and continue the story. The pictures were a nice touch and definitely added to the overall feel and atmosphere of the book.

This book reminds me of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children a lot. Not because of the plot, but because you start reading thinking it's going to be a scary and creepy read but it's actually more of an adventure story. Miss Peregrine's fits more into the fantasy genre, while Asylum is more of a supernatural kind of story. They're fun books, but can be difficult to like when you're expecting something completely different.
