Asylum
Asylum | Madeleine Roux
Madeleine Roux's New York Times bestselling Asylum is a thrilling and creepy photo-illustrated novel that Publishers Weekly called "a strong YA debut that reveals the enduring impact of buried trauma on a place." Featuring found photographs from real asylums and filled with chilling mystery and page-turning suspense, Asylum is a horror story that treads the line between genius and insanity, perfect for fans of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. For sixteen-year-old Dan Crawford, the New Hampshire College Prep program is the chance of a lifetime. Except that when Dan arrives, he finds that the usual summer housing has been closed, forcing students to stay in the crumbling Brookline Dormformerly a psychiatric hospital. As Dan and his new friends Abby and Jordan start exploring Brookline's twisty halls and hidden basement, they uncover disturbing secrets about what really went on here . . . secrets that link Dan and his friends to the asylum's dark past. Because Brookline was no ordinary mental hospital, and there are some secrets that refuse to stay buried.

I wasn't expecting a lot but this turned out to be a nice little read. It's got a former psychiatric hospital converted into student accommodation as a base, alongside spooky goings-on (night trips into the old part of the building which still retain the cells & operating theatre of the old place, disappearing emails, automatic writing, the MC having visions of the Warden of the asylum, etc). (Continued)

OutsmartYourShelf Teenage me would have loved it, adult me likes it too. It's eerie rather than scary & the photographs add to the atmosphere. I wasn't keen on the budding romance between Daniel & Abby, but that's just me. Definitely reading the next one. 4🌟

Reading other reviews, I didn't have very high expectations. Given my low expectations, I think that allowed me to enjoy this book more than other people.
I thought it was enjoyable, a quick read, and entertaining enough for me. Like others have said, I didn't think it was scary enough to be considered a horror book, but I think it could be scary for a much younger audience. With that said, I'll definitely be reading the next book in the series.

This was an extremely ambitious book, and if it had cut down on the subplots it would have been able to spend more time on the main story. Dan finding true friends was a great theme to add to Asylum, but the character relationships were rushed. The characterization was also inconsistent throughout the story. Not a series I will continue.

The story was good but had potential to be very creepy. More detailed and just a little slower pace would have made this better for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is my #LMPBC book and boy was it a goodie!! Spooky, creepy, all around twisted ride!
I can‘t wait to listen to Sanctum and see how the story continues!🗝

Dan is a summer student for pre-college. His dorm has a sorted past…as an asylum. Maybe sometimes it‘s best to leave the past undisturbed…
Even if it calls to you🤫

5✨ Absolutely chilling. I loved every minute! Dan is going to “college” in a refurbished old psychiatric hospital. He has these dreams that don‘t seem to be isolated to just him and when one of the other students ends up dead things seem to get ghostly.

This is what I needed! I wouldn't classify it as horror, more of supernatural YA suspense but I really enjoyed it. Tried the audiobook but the PB is filled with creepy asylum picks that just add that extra unsettling factor. Looking forward to the next one

Daniel Crawford is taking part in a summer, college-prep program. He is housed in an old insane asylum on campus. Soon, strange things start to happen around campus and to Daniel. Is it all in his head, or is this place haunted by the people of the past? Does Daniel have a connection to this asylum? We watch as he digs deeper to find out the truth of this place, even if it means risking his life. This #ya novel had me creeped out!

A pretty bland read that felt like it wanted to hop on the Random Riggs bandwagon, the photographs were poorly photoshopped, the characters flat and uninteresting and the horror wasn't remotely unique or scary.

This was a tough one. I both liked it & was let down a little. The characters felt younger than they were supposed to be (I kept picturing 13/14-year-olds) Just when I started to get sucked in...meh... Maybe I need to read the rest of the books for it all to come together. I am aware this is YA, so that‘s why I‘m not being harsh. I REALLY dig the premise and I was just hoping for a little more oomph. Dame Agatha has spoiled me...

mydearwatson These books look interesting, but how is its treatment of mental health? The description makes me a little wary, but I think the whole old photograph thing is really cool. 5y
AshleyHoss820 @mydearwatson They don‘t really go into it. It‘s more of a focus on the former warden and two specific patients that were “criminally insane.” It‘s fairly lacking in details and the end leaves too many questions, for my tastes. 😕🤷🏻‍♀️ 5y
AshleyHoss820 @mydearwatson I LOVE the found-photographs premise and find it really interesting, which is why loved the Peculiar Children series so much! Have you tried those? (edited) 5y

I had high hopes for this book. It had potential to be scary but it didn't follow through. It's a teen book but felt more juvenile. The ending was all kinds of crazy, like the author didn't know how to end it or how to even successfully carry it over to the sequel. It'd be a fun read for an 11-13 yr old. 2019 SWON TRC
