When Dimple Met Rishi (Reprint)
When Dimple Met Rishi (Reprint) | Sandhya Menon
A New York Times bestseller "Effervescent." --Chicago Tribune "Full of warm characters and sweet romance." --Entertainment Weekly "Get ready to fall in love with Dimple Shah and Rishi Patel." --Hello Giggles "Adorable." --Buzzfeed "Deliciously quirky, funny, and nerdy." --Bustle "Utterly delightful." --BookRiot "Heartwarming, empathetic, and often hilarious--a delightful read." --Kirkus Reviews (starred review) The rom-com that everyone's talking about! Eleanor & Park meets Bollywood in this hilarious and heartfelt novel about two Indian-American teens whose parents conspire to arrange their marriage. Dimple Shah has it all figured out. With graduation behind her, she's more than ready for a break from her family, from Mamma's inexplicable obsession with her finding the "Ideal Indian Husband." Ugh. Dimple knows they must respect her principles on some level, though. If they truly believed she needed a husband right now, they wouldn't have paid for her to attend a summer program for aspiring web developers...right? Rishi Patel is a hopeless romantic. So when his parents tell him that his future wife will be attending the same summer program as him--wherein he'll have to woo her--he's totally on board. Because as silly as it sounds to most people in his life, Rishi wants to be arranged, believes in the power of tradition, stability, and being a part of something much bigger than himself. The Shahs and Patels didn't mean to start turning the wheels on this "suggested arrangement" so early in their children's lives, but when they noticed them both gravitate toward the same summer program, they figured, Why not? Dimple and Rishi may think they have each other figured out. But when opposites clash, love works hard to prove itself in the most unexpected ways.

I always feel like such a grumpy old woman when I so fervently dislike a book that everyone else seems to love. I ranted about this one a lot on GR. My main issue probably comes down to finding Dimple irredeemably unlikable. Just because someone is a strong female character interested in computers doesn't mean she also needs to be an absolute ass who goes off on everyone who doesn't 100% agree with her, ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) physically punches her boyfriend when she disagrees with what he says (and then when he says that it hurts tells him that she's “not like other girls“... guess that makes it okay??), and talks down CONSTANTLY about every other female in the story because they don't want what Dimple wants, which obviously means that what they want is wrong/bad. Look, I also don't wear makeup or get super girly, and I didn't in high school either, but that⬇ 8mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) doesn't make me somehow morally superior to girls who do/did. I hated the “getting married ruins everything“ vibe (like I am not saying 18-year-olds should all get married straight out of high school, but acting like getting married at any point in her 20s would mean her life is OVER was just so ridiculous). Also, nothing about this coding camp she was at made sense to me, mostly because they literally never seemed to be doing ANY app ⬇ 8mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) development at ANY point in this book lol I had other issues, but that's enough whining for now. There were cute moments in this book, and I liked Rishi a lot, but overall this book just didn't work for me.

LiseWorks Oh my! I love it when a book gets emotions running. I love that rant. 8mo
thegreensofa Great pan review. I think I would probably agree with you if I read it, so you saved me and I‘m not going to read it! (sorry for your experience though). 👍 8mo
batsy Go forth and pan with abandon! I had fun reading this review 😁 8mo
Susanita Tell us how you really feel! 😂 8mo
BookishMadHatter I love this rant because I finally found someone who said what I've been thinking about a bunch of books ive read lately. I find that whenever someone tries to make a "strong" female character, they turn her into a total unbearable b!t@h. It's even made me not want to read books with females as the lead 8mo
BarbaraJean Hahaha—YES. This book annoyed me so much. Great concept, terrible execution. Especially the stupid pretext of a coding camp at which they did literally no coding. And I hated the writing, too: things like “his heart was like melted chocolate” and other terrible comparisons. #fanofthepan 😁 8mo
Anna40 Love the rant too 😝 8mo
TheLudicReader I hate loads of popular books. You are not alone. 8mo
TheAromaofBooks @LiseWorks @thegreensofa @batsy @Susanita @dabbe @Anna40 @TheLudicReader - Thank you for making me feel better about all my whining 😂 8mo
TheAromaofBooks @BookishMadHatter - I think what really frustrates me about this “strong=bitch“ attitude is that then the implication is that the flipside is also true - if you're a nice/kind person that means you're a pathetic doormat. I'm not here to say that women/people should just roll over and take it when someone is mean to them, but to act like kindness, empathy, patience, and a willingness to explain your position reasonably somehow makes you weak ⬇ 8mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) really frustrates me. It seems especially harmful in YA, to teach girls that being rude, obnoxious, and cruelly snarky is what will get you forward in life and prove that you're “strong.“ 8mo
TheAromaofBooks @BarbaraJean - I was just like... what is the point of this camp?! Do they have classes? Workshops? Scheduled lab sessions? ANYTHING?! The entire talent show made zero sense (what does this have to do with coding?!?!?!) I was confused about the talent show prize's implication that each team is funding their own research, since that $1000 goes towards that?? Or something?? And apparently if you win you get everything, but if you don't win you ⬇ 8mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) you don't even get, I don't know, feedback on your project?? A chance to share it with someone else?? A little show-and-tell session where your parents/random people who are interested in app development could come see the projects?? ANYTHING?! I loved the concept of this camp, but it NEVER felt like they were actually at one, so it just seemed like a plot device to make sure we know how SERIOUS Dimple is about IMPORTANT stuff 🙄 8mo
BarbaraJean Seriously!! The author could have at least MENTIONED them attending workshops, classes, SOMETHING! The setting was clearly only a pretext for her premise of girl-who-likes-tech meets sensitive boy. The huge focus on the talent show instead of any, you know, ACTUAL CODING seemed to indicate the author had not only done little to no research about the entire setting, she literally did not care about continuity, plausibility, or even good writing.😩 8mo
TheAromaofBooks @BarbaraJean - The initial little “get to know you“ run around with the photographs felt like a natural part of the camp, but the talent show definitely felt like a plot point instead of something that would actually happen. We're super serious about developing this app and you have very limited time to do it and some people even stay up all night because time is so tight... so we're going to spend hours and hours preparing for a talent show!? 😑 8mo
BarbaraJean 😂 😂 YES. So. Dumb. 8mo

So nothing really wrong with this one. It‘s just not my genre. I feel a bit uncomfortable reading about teens kissing and making out.

I only read this for #NoShameReadathon - YA romance

It was of course very predictable. I was a bit uncomfortable with her parents trying to marry her off at 18 in a contemporary novel.

I did like that she had passions in web design and really worked at her goals and didn‘t have to change herself.

Nessavamusic It is a cute one. I feel past YA contemporaries too. The older I get the less I can tolerate teen drama. 😉 3y

Best word to describe this book is “charming”. Dimple is a brainy girl who dreams of a high tech position and is getting ready to study at Stanford. Rishon is set to be in the engineering program at MIT. Dimple is surprised that her parents agree to let her go to a summer program in San Francisco. What she doesn‘t know is that Rishi and Dimple‘s parents have made an agreement to match those two. Funny and touching

Film and TV adaptations make my heart so happy, so I was so excited to chat with Ashley and Sara on the most recent episode of the Unabridged Podcast. Mismatched, the adaptation of the Sandhya Menon's When Dimple Met Rishi (a fantastic YA novel!) is a six-episode Netflix series that definitely changes some things. The setting shifts from the U.S. to India, and the show definitely makes some other pretty big changes, which we discuss.

MallenNC I didn‘t realize this was based on the book. I will have to watch and then listen to your podcast. 4y

This is one of those books I always came across at the bookstore but never took the plunge on. I came across this as a free audiobook and thought it was just what I needed as a work companion this week and was totally right.

This was very sweet. I enjoyed the relationship and themes that touched upon cultural expectations

I don‘t know why I‘m only reading books that are not on my #bookspinbingo board - but here‘s another free spot filler

It‘s brightened up here - you can actually see the Queen Mary 2. And I‘ve learned that San Francisco‘s fog is called Karl. Not sure I want to name our rain, but I‘ll consider it.

This was a cute read. A bit too YA & a lot too rom for my taste, but if I will read YA romcoms, what do I expect? I liked Dimple, & Rishi grew on me. It did sag in the middle (TOO LONG!) but the story picked up when Ashish arrived. A low pick.

Sarahreadstoomuch I really like her books - but I am really good with teen and rom! Nice review! 4y

I re-read Sandhya Menon's When Dimple Met Rishi as part of our #unabridgedpodbuddyread for June (yes, my review is quite late!), and I loved it all over again. I laughed, I cried, I raged. All the emotions, right at the surface!⠀

The book's premise is simple: Dimple and Rishi are both second-generation Indian-Americans whose parents want to arrange a marriage between the two just-graduated teens. ⬇️

UnabridgedPod Rishi's parents tell him about the arrangements, and he's good with it; Dimple's parents DON'T tell her. So, she heads off to a summer technology camp with no idea that she'll be meeting her future husband. Their first meeting is just priceless--I laughed so hard all over again. ⠀

While there's plenty that's funny in this amazing YA rom com, Menon also addresses many serious topics: ⬇️
4y
UnabridgedPod she takes on women (and women of color) in technology, gender roles, socioeconomic issues, the value of the arts . . . all of this is woven into the story so beautifully, but there's a nice weight to the book. Dimple and Rishi are rich, nuanced characters--I didn't always like them or agree with their decisions, even though their motivations are clear enough that I understood them. And the love story is just beautiful.⠀⬇️ 4y
UnabridgedPod We had so much fun discussing this one as a buddy read--I think we were all giddy and rapturous over the love story . . . and then there were plenty of serious details to discuss. The varied perspectives of the group were excellent, and I enjoyed hearing everyone's opinions.⠀

Who else has read this one? Do you like rom coms that include some serious concepts, or do you prefer all romance and comedy?

The only thing I really wanted more of was the app, Dimple is studying and doing all this for her career and loves it so much. I would have loved to have seen more of that incorporated into the novel. You only really see bits and pieces of them talking about design and what the app will do. Overall this novel was a fantastic and quick read for me, I finished it in one sitting. I enjoyed the culture and overall story, but it just lacked for me ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I loved so much about this, like the characters and the chemistry between them, but the plot sort of fizzles towards the end, focusing way too much on the relationship and not enough on Dimple‘s coding project, which is supposed to be the biggest deal with her but ends up feeling like an after thought. It felt like all the author knew about app development was the word “wireframe” 😂 The ending also felt too neat & tied up in a bow for me.

At a summer coding program, Dimple is approached by Rishi, who informs her that their parents have arranged for them to be married. This is the last thing she wants. She is furious, but cuts him some slack since she knows she‘s really mad at her parents. Over time she grows fond of him. I don‘t read a lot of romance novels, but this was cute. This was a super fast read & a really cute book. It‘s storyline is a pretty basic, though well told, teen romance story, but it‘s heart comes from the Indian-American culture that was interwoven. My favorite part was that Menon didn‘t overly explain everything. I was glad the author didn‘t feel like she had to fully cater to her non-Indian audience. This book is set in the summer, so if you need one more fun summertime read, I recommend this one!

This book was easy to follow and didn't need much thought. I chuckled to myself at parts because, ignoring the arranged marriage storyline, I treated a guy with the same distaste as Dimple and was flat out mean to him when we first met. I married that same guy 27 months later. This was a cute story, simple romance, with a coming into oneself progression. I enjoyed the little glimpses of what Indian life, family, and culture can be like.
