Memory Man
Memory Man | David Baldacci
With over 110 million copies of his novels in print, David Baldacci is one of the most widely read storytellers in the world. Now he introduces a startling, original new character: a man with perfect memory who must solve his own family's murder. MEMORY MAN Amos Decker's life changed forever--twice. The first time was on the gridiron. A big, towering athlete, he was the only person from his hometown of Burlington ever to go pro. But his career ended before it had a chance to begin. On his very first play, a violent helmet-to-helmet collision knocked him off the field for good, and left him with an improbable side effect--he can never forget anything. The second time was at home nearly two decades later. Now a police detective, Decker returned from a stakeout one evening and entered a nightmare--his wife, young daughter, and brother-in-law had been murdered. His family destroyed, their killer's identity as mysterious as the motive behind the crime, and unable to forget a single detail from that horrible night, Decker finds his world collapsing around him. He leaves the police force, loses his home, and winds up on the street, taking piecemeal jobs as a private investigator when he can. But over a year later, a man turns himself in to the police and confesses to the murders. At the same time a horrific event nearly brings Burlington to its knees, and Decker is called back in to help with this investigation. Decker also seizes his chance to learn what really happened to his family that night. To uncover the stunning truth, he must use his remarkable gifts and confront the burdens that go along with them. He must endure the memories he would much rather forget. And he may have to make the ultimate sacrifice. MEMORY MAN will stay with you long after the turn of the final page.

Very gripping! (Trigger: school shooting). Dekker never recovered from the murder of his entire family, but he is trying to put himself together just as a man turns himself in and confesses while a school shooting is occurring. Complicated, yes; but Dekker is convinced it‘s somehow all tied in.

I've been tentative about authors who seem to crank novels like a machine. I loathe formulaic writing. This was my intro to Baldacci. I was impressed! The character development was great. Amos Decker was believable and well fleshed out. The plot kept me wondering and turning the pages. I look forward to the next book and how Amos develops further. 5 🌟

A bit disappointed in how on the nose Baldacci is trying to tackle trendy themes to be current. Trans/Intersexuality, school schootings, police injustice, toxic masculinity and lad culture, subculture darknet, the mental spectrum... combined with his usual „superhuman with (only) one flaw“ hero and bossy female sidekick it comes out a bit boring.

This book came highly recommended, but it was not what I expected. I did like the character Amos Decker, the “Memory Man”, who because of a football injury does not forget anything. It was the overabundance of horrific events that took place in this story that did not sit well with me. I expect a few in a crime mystery, but this crossed the line for my taste.

I like Amos Decker. He never forgets anything, at all, ever. He doesn‘t pick up on normal social cues and is guilt-ridden over the murders of his wife and daughter, which he found. The details and twists are great, if sometimes really convenient. And SO much page space is given to Decker‘s body size. So my first Baldacci didn‘t reach Karin Slaughter or Michael Connelly status, but that‘s okay. Still continuing with the series! Super entertaining.

I just started this one and got hooked super early in. Like in the first few chapters. Remembering EVERYTHING? Yikes.

Since it‘s time to cook for the evening, I downloaded the audiobook from my library 🙌🏻🎧 Truth be told, I‘m not 100% sure about the audio yet but I am really liking the story! (there is background music and a conversational style of multi-narrator recording vs different narrators for each POV)

Former cop Amos Decker has perfect recall due to a head injury; however, he has no idea who killed his wife and daughter. After a massacre at a high school, Decker learns the cases are connected. And he comes to realize that this a personal vendetta against him. It‘s a terrific read with plenty of plot twists and suspense. It‘s a tad on the gory side, if you are willing to suspend your disbelief, you might want to consider checking this one out.

Amos Decker is the Memory Man, due to a sporting injury he has now got a remarkable memory and can remember everything. All well and good you think, but there's are certain #memories you don't want to remember like walking in on the murder scene for his wife and daughter. This book introduces a fabulous new character as we get to know him in this and the other books in the series. Recommended! #NoteworthyNovember

I think today for #MelodiousMusicals #memories I will go with Amos Decker, the Memory Man! Have read the first two books in the trilogy and really enjoyed them, especially book 2 The Last Mile. I now need to get hold of the third book in the trilogy, The Fix. I say Trilogy but pleased to say there look as though there will be more books in the series! #audiobooks
#Cats truly has to be one of the standout musicals of the late 20th Century!

Andrew65 @CrowCAH That's his problem he cannot forget anything, including things he'd rather not remember, such as coming home to find his wife and daughter murdered. This is not a spoiler as is mentioned in the blurb for the book, and the book is about what happens next. 7y
CrowCAH @Andrew65 interesting! There was a TV show where a woman remembered everything and she helped solve murder cases, called Unforgettable. 7y

A good detective mystery is always a guilty pleasure of mine and this book was no different. Really enjoyed the characters and I think Amos is unique enough to make this a successful story. The ending felt a bit rushed but otherwise I enjoyed it. My first Baldacci, think I may pick up the second in the series. If you enjoy a good mystery, give it shot!
