In Germany on a solo trip for research. Did some sight-seeing today and stumbled on a restaurant themed after Peter Pan. Neat ambience and even better food.
pickWell, it strikes me that all of the children are dead. They've died from some childhood infection, probably a chill caught from having the window open late at night, Peter Pan is the psychopomp guiding their souls into the afterlife, and a desolated Mary Darling sits in the silent, empty nursery imagining the adventures of her dead children, while her husband quietly loses his mind to grief.

Last book purchase of our break is another children's classic I haven't read: Peter Pan. Visiting Dumfries before setting off for home, we went into Moat Brae, the house belonging to Barrie's childhood friends, where they played the imaginative games which formed the seeds of the book. I guess I had to get a copy while we were here! 🧚🏻♂️🏴

so-soI never read Peter Pan before or knew the story except for the vaguest ideas. It was the favourite book of the narrator in All my Mothers and I thought I would finally read it today.
Mostly I found it very depressing and quite racist, and the fantasy really strange. Some of the writing is beautiful, I'll give it that. All in all I find it interesting that it became such a classic.
pickI would never understand how this is a children's book. The story is harrowing.
pickThough the story is fun & I did enjoy reading it, this book is definitely a product of its time. The misogyny & race content did not age well & does detract from the story. Information about Barrie's life & the story behind the book is touching, heart-breaking & gives the book a bit more of an endearing quality. A good fairytale despite its downfalls. Worth the read for me, but not at the top of my list for a current middle grade recommendation.
All children, except one, grow up.

The one book I have in poor condition because I read it all the time as a little girl. But like, I just re-read it and there‘s a lot more killing in this book than I remember. Also it had the sentence “Fairies had to climb over him on their way home from an orgy.” So I‘m just… wondering how my childhood brain processed that sentence 🙃

so-soI'm sure this will be an unpopular opinion, but I didn't love this book. It was hard for me to accept it as a story for children with all the focus on death, dying, and murder.
There have been several Peter Pan related movies made and I've reserved a few at my local library. I think I'm going to start with "Finding Neverland" which actually tells the author's story and focuses on his inspiration behind Peter Pan and its cast of characters.
"I say, how do you do it? How do you fly?" asked John.
"You just think lovely wonderful thoughts," Peter explained, "and they lift you up in the air."

so-soI've always wanted to read this classic so I'm glad I finally have! At first the writing was odd but considering how old this book is I should have expected it. Also the themes and ideas in this book are very traditional, and even fairly dark at times. The world of Neverland was so magical but not overly detailed, the plot was basic but fun, and overall the novel is quite short and easy to read quickly, I enjoyed the ending though its disturbing😂

so-soWe received a beautiful copy of Peter Pan for Christmas and we read it for bedtime story. I had only watched the Disney film, so I was shocked by the book. Peter Pan is a horrible character my son even started cheering on Captain Hook. Don‘t even get me started on Wendy and spring cleaning! #peterpan
