The beloved story of a spunky young girl and her hilarious escapades. "A rollicking story."--The Horn Book Tommy and his sister Annika have a new neighbor, and her name is Pippi Longstocking. She has crazy red pigtails, no parents to tell her what to do, a horse that lives on her porch, and a flair for the outrageous that seems to lead to one adventure after another!

A timeless classic that never fails to bring a smile to my lips. Ahead of its time in some things, not so much in others (and this should definitely be updated), it's a simple story (or collection of stories) with remarkable characters. It's hard, if not downright impossible, not to be charmed and inspired by Pipi.

Sorry for the bad cover, it‘s part of a best book of the 20th century series.

I grew up watching Pippi on television, the Swedish series from the 60s. So no surprises when it came to what happened, each chapter feels like an episode. I am surprised at how true to the book the series actually was. And after reading the book I actually know how old Pippi is, and it‘s younger than I thought. She‘s 9.

Ruthiella I think I read the book first at about age 9. We watched the Swedish adaptation here in the US in the late 70s and 80s too, dubbed of course. 4mo

Thanks for the tag @TheSpineView ! 👍

1. I don‘t know if I have a favorite female literary character, but Pippi Longstocking came to mind. She can do anything!

2. Apparently Stieg Larsson imagined Lisbeth Salander as a modern, grown up Pippi. I‘d like to transport Pippi into Villette as Lucy Snowe‘s childhood friend. She‘d certainly change the trajectory of that novel. 😂

dabbe In 5th grade, for the dreaded required book reports, I begged the teacher to let me read a Pippi Longstocking book (I was on a roll with her). She told me if the book wasn't on “the list“, I couldn't read it. What teacher would say that now? I'd be thrilled if my students wanted to read ANYTHING on their own! 🤣 1y
Ruthiella @dabbe Book reports were so hard in 5th grade! 😂 I hope today‘s teachers encourage their students as you do to read what interests them! 👍 1y
Reggie Whaaaaaaaat, Lisbeth Sander as Pippi?!!!! I have never read the book but growing up her movie was on a lot and I loved it and can still hear that Pippi Longstocking is coming in to your town song. And her and the kids scrubbing the floor on scrub skates. Aww Pippi! 1y

This book was wild man. I read the second one with my fifth grade class and honestly had no memory of anything about the characters. I was definitely not expecting people to just let Pippie get away with all her antics, albeit that they were ridiculously hilarious. Still not sure what a “scrubbing vacation” is though. 4⭐️

Pippi, who lives alone in Villa Villekula with her monkey and horse is such a spirited and confident child and it a joy to escape into her world. I like children's literature because a child 's imagination can overcome the bleakest of life circumstances, an ability that people generally lose with age.

#OnThisDay in 2002, celebrated children's author and publisher Astrid Lindgren passed away. Through Pippi Longstocking and many more, she brought joy to millions of children around the world. "A childhood without books – that would be no childhood. That would be like being shut out from the enchanted place where you can go and find the rarest kind of joy." She also had an asteroid named after her, which is pretty darn cool. #HistoryGetsLIT

When I was young, I was no different than I am now; in other words, I was a reader. Somehow, though, I missed some kids classics like this book and the Narnia ones. Where I‘m enjoying the Narnia ones, Pippi Longstocking is just okay. At 8 or 9, I suspect I would have loved it. At 64, I keep thinking she shouldn‘t be living alone and find some of her behavior to be bratty. That said, I will probably give it to my 8 year old granddaughter. 😊

Sparklemn When I read this at 8 or 9, I found it disturbing that she lived alone! 3y

#acrossapril April 9: wild child

Pippi Longstocking was a wild child because having spent her entire life at sea and seemingly an orphan, she has limited knowledge of societal expectations for common courtesy and childhood behavior.

GingerAntics This is seriously making me want to work with little kids way more than the big ones. Not that I don‘t love my kids, but little ones are so bloody cute!!! 4y
Scochrane26 @GingerAntics I work w/ both older & younger kids. Little ones are adorable & give you hugs. 4y
GingerAntics @Scochrane26 is that allowed? That‘s never been allowed in our districts. There is very limited allowed physical contact between staff/teachers and students. I find it interesting that you can‘t hug them, but you can paddle them. 4y
Scochrane26 @GingerAntics I assume there‘s not a policy on it. I‘ve always hugged kids but let them make the first move. At the school I used to work at, the kids hugged most of the adults—they were needy kids & enjoyed the positive attention. 4y
GingerAntics @Scochrane26 Eh, you haven‘t gotten in trouble. I think it‘s probably pretty safe if the kids make the first move. Yeah, some of the policies at the schools here are questionable, in my opinion. (edited) 4y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics yes they believe I‘m the grown up Pippy. 🏆 4y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics my little ones hug me all the time. They make the first move. Teachers hug each other I‘ve hugged a young teacher that had a bad day and I am not a hugger 🤣🤷🏽‍♀️ the kiddos need it. 4y
GingerAntics See, I think that‘s important especially for little kids - just that the option is open. I don‘t think the option to inflict pain should be open (ever, but I know I‘m in the minority on that) if the option for comfort isn‘t open. 4y
GingerAntics Okay, officially, your the grown up Pippy!!! I‘m with your kids on this!!! lol 4y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I have kids hang on my long hippie skirts -thus leggings under all skirts- , play with my many bracelets I wear- touch my arm when they read...whatever they need. I may be some kids only constant that‘s not lost on me. I think correct human touch is important for healing ...if all you know is bad, monsters are made. My opinion. I don‘t agree at all with punishment in any physical form ever. 4y
GingerAntics I agree with all of that. Yes. 4y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics well good we‘ve solved it!! ❤️ it‘s maddening to see the solution and not be able to implement ! 4y
GingerAntics I totally agree with that. I don‘t understand how all these people are so confused about why teenagers and kids are getting more and more violent, when adults are getting more and more violent with children. I also don‘t understand the sentiment that people seem to have that their children are their property, but that‘s just how the law works, I guess. 🙄 4y
