Endless Beach
Endless Beach | Jenny Colgan
From the New York Times bestselling author of The Bookshop on the Corner and The Cafe by the Sea comes another enchanting, unforgettable novel of a woman who makes a fresh start on the beautiful Scottish Island of Mure--only to discover life has more surprises in store for her. When Flora MacKenzie traded her glum career in London for the remote Scottish island of Mure, she never dreamed that Joel--her difficult, adorable boss--would follow. Yet now, not only has Flora been reunited with her family and opened a charming caf by the sea, but she and Joel are taking their first faltering steps into romance. With Joel away on business in New York, Flora is preparing for the next stage in her life. And that would be...? Love? She's feeling it. Security? In Joel's arms, sure. Marriage? Not open to discussion. In the meanwhile, Flora is finding pleasure in a magnificent sight: whales breaking waves off the beaches of Mure. But it also signals something less joyful. According to local superstition, it's an omen--and a warning that Flora's future could be as fleeting as the sea-spray...A bracing season on the shore sets the stage for Jenny Colgan's delightful novel that's as funny, heartwarming, and unpredictable as love itself.

I seem to be working my way through several Jenny Colgan series, and on top of that I haven‘t read the books within each series in order. This is Book2 and I‘d read Books 1&4. I wasn‘t expecting to be gutted by this one, but Ms Colgan brought me to tears several times. So yea, I need Book 3 soon.

Cyndij82 I have just discovered Jenny Colgan. Loved her Little Bakery series! Enjoy her books!! 3y
marleed @Cyndij82 oh what a fun discovery for you. I‘m only a couple years into reading her but anticipate reading her whole collection. I kind of love it when that happens! 3y
PaperbackPirate I am accidentally reading the Bookshop series out of order but it‘s working. I love her writing! 3y

4.5 hours in! Finished the tagged book; going for a another #bookspinbingo before the end of the month. I feel a personal record coming on for #24B4Monday. I‘d like to finish two more books. My FIL went home last week, and the sad stress that has been so omnipresent has lifted, so it‘s been lovely to read without pressure.

This book is #2 in the Mure series. I liked it and will read the next one, but didn‘t enjoy it quite as much as the first one (The Café by the Sea).

Jenny Colgan and fish curry on this wretchedly cold day. 12 is an unacceptable temperature for late May.

I‘d NEVER make it on Mure, the northern Scottish island where THE ENDLESS BEACH takes place. Then again, they probably get warmer winters than we do here, just like Iceland does. I could handle it in the winter because it‘d still be better than what I left behind.

Good. Even though at times the writing was awful and the characters got on my nerves, it deals with some serious issues and at the end is a charming little story. Not one of her best.

Oof, this one got me right in the feels. This isn‘t an easy, happy read; it is tough and heartbreaking but oh so good. I loved visiting Mure again and spending time with these characters, warts and all. Even through my tears, this is one of my favorites of Colgan‘s. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The hard part of audio/digital books is a lack of strategic placement for pics.

Anyhoo, I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of this book. It's not to say the first was shallow or anything, this book just hit on a lot of cultural points that many others in this genre avoid. I do object with a couple aspects (spoiler commented below). Even so, it was still a good read.

CampbellTaraL Objection 1: the gay couple does not get a HEA - Colton has stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He manages to marry Fenton before revealing he's dying (so no one accuses Fenton of coercion to get Colton's money). Our media has a serious problem with never portraying LGTBQ couples in a normalized light. Some kind of fallout, tragedy, etc. always occurs. So while it was important to the story, I can't ignore the bad representation. 5y
CampbellTaraL Objection 2: Flora was pretty ridiculous in a lot of her reactions, which is weird since she didn't seem so out of sorts in the first book. Childish "secret setup"? As a former paralegal, failing to see how client confidentiality ties Joel's hands, restricting what he can talk to her about? I don't know what the deal was, but I felt the other relationships in the story, romantic or not, were more interesting and satisfying to follow. 5y

Work has out done itself today, I tell ya. To combat it, I will treat my ears to some coziness. I'm such a sucker for UK accents, my word.

Although... when they drop into their interpretation of American accents, it's cringey as all get out. Mostly the NY ones, which this series is full of so maybe I'm just compounding Monday's misery? 😅

Seriously though, as someone from the PNW, our friends across the sea make us all sound SO obnoxious.

sprainedbrain I agree with that! 😂 Who is the narrator of this one? 5y
CampbellTaraL @sprainedbrain Glad it's not just me! Sarah Barron is the narrator, same as the first book. Hopefully the American guy will have little dialogue. "Hush now and just be pretty, your narrator is giving you a bad accent." ? 5y
sprainedbrain @taraWritesSci One of my favorites is Steve West (sometimes called Shane East) and even his American accents are kind of cringey. 😂 5y

JamieArc Ha! I just finished listening to Little Beach Street Bakery, and while the British accents were candy to my ears, the American accents (and these were Southern accents) made me cringe. 5y
CampbellTaraL @JamieArc Oh man, I need to have a listen to that one. 🤭 5y
BookwormM If it makes you feel any better I feel exactly the same when American actors do British accents 🤣🤣🤣 5y
CampbellTaraL @BookwormM haha! Maybe this is some wide scale payback for all the terrible attempts at a British accent. 😜 5y

A sweet sequel to The Cafe By the Sea (definitely read that one first). Jenny Colgan writes good heartwarming, food focused, feel good novels. This one picks up shortly after the & divides the focus between relationship growing pains for Flora & stories for some of the key secondary characters. It will be a good transition to the third book, coming out for Christmas. And there's a narwhal, lots of cheese & baked goods--never a bad thing. 😉📚💙

A bit rainy to sit outside this Saturday morning but I'm happy to be in my neighborhood coffeeshop enjoying a deviled avocado with jalapeño breadfruit hummus, a dirty almond milk chai latte & a library e-book, when I fully expected to be home bailing out water. We dodged a bullet with hurricane, now tropical storm Lane though Maui & especially the Big Island (places had 45-inches of rain) ?got hit hard. Running errands before our rains get heavy.
