World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War
World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War | Max Brooks
We survived the zombie apocalypse, but how many of us are still haunted by that terrible time? We have (temporarily?) defeated the living dead, but at what cost? Told in the haunting and riveting voices of the men and women who witnessed the horror firsthand, World War Z, a #1 New York Times bestseller and the basis for the blockbuster movie, is the only record of the plague years.

Car ride listening! Glad I‘m not driving because it is raining so hard. Did not get a lot of reading done this weekend due to being out of town for a party. Hopefully get in some Dracula reading tonight though!

#scarathlon #24b4monday #teamstoker @TheReadingMermaid

Zoes_Human This is my all-time favorite road trip book. I have driven through the Yukon Territory with snow on the ground while listening to the bit about what happens to the folks going north and, on another road trip, I was going across the bridge over the Atchafalaya Swamp while listening to the part that happens there.

It's an amazing production, and I have a ton of good memories associated with it.
2mo
Kimberlone @Zoes_Human I‘ve read the book before but the audiobook is such a different story experience! Loving the full cast production. 2mo

Reggie @Zoes_Human lol, that is awesome. I read this book such a long time ago but has stayed with me. That poor girl‘s parents and the pressure they were under to keep her alive. Would you have eaten the soup? And that pilot who gets sucked out of the plain over the swamp is my favorite part of the book. How she saves herself subconsciously. Mets!!! 1mo
Zoes_Human @Reggie I would have eaten the soup.

I only recently relistened to it. I've had an abridged copy that was gifted to me in 2009 for the road trip moving back to NC from AK. However, I recently purchased an unabridged edition and listened to that I love, love, love all the extra material.

I originally read this back when it was published. I brought my copy into school. While assessing 7th and 8th grade students for reading intervention I show them a table covered in books and ask what appeals to them. This is by far the most popular one. Figured I should re-read it to see if there was anything wildly inappropriate. A few F-bombs, a few surly characters. Nothing worse than what they‘re watching on cable tv or Netflix. (Cont)

MandaMT I‘ve always loved that this book is a totally different take on the zombie genre. Instead of a group of scrappy characters holed up somewhere or trying to get from point A to point B, it looks at an outbreak from a global scale. Brooks has some interesting ideas about who would struggle and who would thrive based on geopolitical history and policies. 2mo
MandaMT Might be hard for younger readers to get into w/out that background knowledge. Conversely, it could be a spring board for them to learn more. 2mo

Hmm, I loved the first half. The concept is so cool; reading about a zombie apocalypse like a history book. But then I got world weary, with no character to care about or root for and all the gun-ho craziness, it just all got too much for me. 🤷‍♀️ #scarathlon #ScaryScavengerHunt (with zombies in it) #teamstoker

I'm a couple days late with my January #roundup.
January was a good reading month for me. I enjoyed all of these very much.
Which was my favorite? It's a surprise to me, but World War Z edged the others out; especially with having the full cast #Audiobook going as well as reading the physical book.
I'm hoping that February is just as good.

First book of 2019. What a great idea to have chosen the audiobook. The All-star cast is amazing, but it also adds flavor and a key element to the story. I'm not sure how much I would have liked if I had just read it.
The writing is good. I loved how it's not your typical American zombie story. It's at a global scale and that reflects on the different stories, ways of survival, characters' traits and so on.

Airport reading with my bf. We have a LONG layover (~7 hours!) at LAX before our last flight back to AK. How else are you supposed to go back and find all of the great quotes or insights you had when you were reading?! 😊 13mo
Kimberlone @CoffeeNBooks 100% agreed! As an English major in college, I couldn‘t read for class without writing in my books! 10 years later, and I never got out of the habit. I thought about this a TON. Ultimately, I have to go with one of the MCs in my zombie series. Lucky Bailey is decisive, intelligent, caring, protective, and funny. Unpopular opinion but this book bored the crap out of me. Since all the stories are told by survivors, except for a handful of stories, there‘s no tension or suspense. No character development, no story arc. All the characters have the same voice even though they‘re from different parts of the globe. And there is so much military & weaponry jargon that it required 90+ footnotes to explain what it all meant.
For me, this was World War Zzzzzzzzzz!

Sabrinamw This is what I was concerned about reading the paper/digital version. You should try listening to the audio edition. I am about 1/3 into the story and I am enjoying all the different voices and the journalistic style. (edited) 1y

Zombies don‘t sparkle, they don‘t seduce, they don‘t love—except, perhaps those in Warm Bodies—they don‘t do much except chomp brains & die...eventually...hopefully. The best zombie stories speak to how humanity overcomes itself, and the zombies of course, to find a way to survive. The tagged book does this well. I loved the format & while I thought the first half was more interesting than the second, I enjoyed the book. A good zombie read. (2/50)

All credit to a perusal of my absolutely HUGE TBR pile this afternoon. My new goal is to read at least 50 of the books currently in my TBR pile before the end of the year. I have been reading this on and off during my snow days this week.

I loved the interview format of the book, and although it was very different to the film, it was so good!

A comprehensive history of the zombie war. What I found particularly interesting (like with Feed) is that technology is still a major part of war and postwar life, not only for those fighting the living dead, but for the civilians.
