Finished this book set in 19th Century #Barbados amongst the slave trade for #ReadingTheAmericas2023. @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

A very comprehensive book that amongst other things takes in the slave trade, a cholera Pandemic and a slave uprising. Well worth devoting time to this Read.

For #readingtheamericas2023 I selected this title for Barbados. Again this is one of my favorite historical authors and I feel she did a wonderful job pulling the reader into her world. She did a very good job bringing this country to life as well as historic details and situations many know little about. #bookspin @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle @TheAromaofBooks

A refreshing historical novel about a young heiress and a colonial sugar plantation full of secrets. The story set in Barbados provides an insightful look at everyday life in the West Indies both pre and post emancipation. In many ways, the book reminded me of The Wide Saragasso Sea by Jean Rhys and captured much of the same feeling.

mavey When We Left Cuba is a great read with similar elements too! Do try if you haven't already😊 3y

#BookReport #WeeklyForecast #Mashup. The Summer Country was one of two still unread from my #NewYearWhoDis list 3 1/2 🌟 I so wanted to like Stella but with 30 minutes left I wanted to throw it away. I honestly don‘t know why I didn‘t bail. Barely 2 🌟 Midnight was a lovely little surprise 3 1/2 🌟. I am pretty close to finishing Florence and Ayesha and am enjoying both.

Cinfhen I really liked Stella at the beginning but by the end, I had enough too!!! I did enjoy both of these books on audio Florence Adler and 4y

I‘ll be honest: most of my photos will likely involve my book, a cat, and my bed. 👍 Also it‘s the time of year when all my library holds appear and I‘m stressed out by where to begin. I chose this one because it takes place in Barbados and I‘m perpetually cold now so could use the escape. Let‘s do this. #historicalfiction #libraryreads

Oh wow! This was wonderful, atmospheric and truly engaging. Usually with dual timelines I rush through one timeline just to get back to the one I enjoy more. That was not the case with this book. Both timelines were so well written and plotted. Willig‘s writing is so lyrical. I even read her acknowledgements 😉. Another great pick for #literarycrew buddy read.

Today is the last day for the #LiteraryCrew ‘s #buddyread of the tagged book. If you‘re still reading...no worries! Please feel free to post any thoughts after you have finished the book.

Any final thoughts on the book? Did you enjoy the book? My big question for everyone - what did you think about the romantic elements in the book? Don‘t forget to put any spoilers under the spoiler tag!

Stayed tuned tomorrow, when the next schedule is posted!

Librarybelle I loved this book! I think it edged out The Ashford Affair as my favorite of Willig‘s, and I really loved that one. I was so impressed with all of the research Willig did for this novel and the historical note section after the novel. The characters were so lively and believable, and I couldn‘t help but be heartbroken over Charles and Jenny. But, the ending...so filled with hope and such a sweet ending. I was so happy for them! 5y
Crazeedi Toward the end, I sort of knew who Emily was, since her grandfather willed the place to her. Definitely well written , I dont know that I've read any other Willig book, only the ones shes written in concert with William's and someone else(name eludes me). I totally enjoyed how she went back and forth in time , that was well done too, not confusing. 5y
Librarybelle @Crazeedi She does do the timelines well. I had a thought who Emily was by the end too, but I was pleased to see that Jenny survived. I wasn‘t sure about that piece of it. I think Willig and Williams write with Karen White; I‘ve read most of those and like them too. 5y
See All 9 Comments
Crazeedi @Librarybelle yes that's the other author, (old age is an issue, lol!) 5y
Jerdencon I think I kinda figured out who Emily was midway through. The romantic stuff was ok - not over the top which I don‘t enjoy. 5y
Jerdencon I really liked this book - but I enjoy historical fiction and this was right up my alley. Would love to visit Bermuda knowing some of the history now. (edited) 5y
Librarybelle @Jerdencon It makes me want to see the island, too, and I‘m not a fan of hot weather! Haha! 5y
kspenmoll I too loved the history of Bermuda & enjoyed the book- racial issues made real- (edited) 5y

So, #LiteraryCrew , I had to finish the #buddyread today. I couldn't help myself!

I adore Willig's writing, and I think this one nudges The Ashford Affair out of the top spot of my favorite of hers. It's rich in storytelling, with compelling characters, a building climax, and a satisfying conclusion. I had received an ARC through #NetGalley of this, but also had to purchase a copy to keep. It's so good!

We'll wrap up discussion Saturday!

Tamra I will definitely get to this one! 5y

We‘re on our last week of this addition of the #LiteraryCrew #buddyread ! The climax is building in both timelines, and while I have an inkling about the way things will turn out, my stomach is also tied in knots. Lots of revelations in the 4th section.

Any thoughts to share with everyone? If it‘s a spoiler, don‘t forget to tag the comment as a spoiler.

Jerdencon I was a little shocked with how Robert was killed off but im glad he‘s gone. And I feel awful for Jenny having to see her daughter and not being able to interact with her. I can‘t imagine! Hoping to finish the last part today or tomorrow! 5y
Mollyanna I am coming out of a reading slump, so am a bit behind. The book is definitely picking up speed (just made it to the second section) and I read about 100 pages yesterday. Hoping to get caught up and finish Saturday. Love Willig‘s writing. 5y

We‘re scheduled to start the fourth week of this book today. I just finished the third week‘s reading...all the feels for this one, though I think Ashford Affair may still be my favorite of hers. More of the #literarycrew finished the story up this past week...how is everyone else doing? I have a comment that I‘ll place as a spoiler below... #buddyread

Librarybelle Does anyone else feel their heart breaking for Charles and Jenny at this point? It is such a horrible situation, and I feel so drawn to their love story. I also have such a sense of foreboding with this...I‘m up to Chapter 19, so still a lot of story left. 5y
catebutler I definitely do! The odds seem to be against them. 😩 And I‘ve learned with this author that not all endings are happy for her characters. I‘m anxious to find out what happens. 😬 5y
Jerdencon I agree - I‘m thinking something bad happens to Jenny. 5y
KarouBlue All I can say is Wait for It, Aaron Burr style. There is much heart left in Jenny/Charles‘ story!!! 5y
Melissa_J I‘m not sure what section I‘m on! Based on the number of pages I‘ve read I think I‘m on section three. I‘m enjoying it so far, and love the setting. I have no idea at this point what is going to happen! 5y

The #LiteraryCrew is traveling to Barbados in the latest Willig #buddyread . There‘s a lot of set up in both timelines, and I am captivated. It also has a slightly different feel from the other books by Willig. Maybe it‘s the subject matter? Or, maybe it‘s because neither timeline is contemporary?

How is everyone else doing?

Crazeedi I'm on chapter 9, the back and forth between chapters is fine. Are we going to have any discussion after everyone is finished. Im very interested in what happens to Charles, and Jenny for sure. We see Mary Anne is still there. 5y
Librarybelle @Crazeedi We can have some discussion at the end, for sure. In past buddy reads, participants posted questions for one another, or posted thoughts about characters. I can also post something at the end as a way to start some discussion! 5y

Bailedbailed

Bailing. This book is not for me. I like Willig‘s writing and pacing and characterizations, but I find I can‘t read multiple pages of a white dude coming to terms with his father forcing a relationship with his black Caribbean slave which resulted in siblings that he (the white son) must now “deal with.” (My words.)
