I was really looking forward to this one but it fell flat for me in some ways. I love the satire in it and the clever ways the author tied in popular culture in a tongue in cheek kind of way, but I felt like it dragged on too long and took a really long time to get to the actual point of the book. It‘s a very smart book in the way it rips apart teen culture and expectations of young girls, but I just think it could have been shorter.

This book is so smart, and so much fun, and I can‘t believe it took me this long to get around to reading it. I loved it so much! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

As much as I enjoy Lord of the Flies, I love this re-telling so much more. It's funny, thought-provoking, and the real-world satire is still so relevant even a decade later.

TIL that author Libba Bray was in a horrible car accident at 18 that resulted in her losing her left eye. We‘re it not for a yellow journal given to her as a graduation present by a stranger, she quite likely would‘ve killed herself her freshman year of college as she battled to deal with the loss of the person she was pre-accident and who she was becoming and a deep depression. #NFN2020

I so LOVE this! Loved it from the beginning to the end. Of course, not everyone's into satire, especially not, if it's as dark humoured as this one. But I'm totally in. Libba Bray found the painful spots of our society and keeps on pushing them until it hurts. And she enjoys it very much. And so did I.

I loved how she read her book and made it even better that way. How all her characters deepen and became friends to me 💝

I literally need a moment just for this scene. Duff here is acting like the nice guy, even after screwing up (really badly I must say). And Adina shuts him down. She doesn‘t let him pressure her and won‘t give him another chance after he broke her heart so badly. This is not something that is shown in books/movies at all. I‘ve been there with the “nice guy”, and never before found such a resemblance in literature. This meant SO much to me to read

What I expected; drama girls obsessed with makeup and looking pretty. What I got; the above PLUS very unique and varied young girls who want to be more then just pretty faces and are done waiting to be saved. I am beyond impressed with this story. Definitely better then the plane of boys we are all made to read. Adina is still my favorite; we‘re so close to being the same in thinking and where she goes. The girls relationships we‘re amazing #lgbtq

Oh My Gosh what is even happening anymore???? Now tv Star pirates pirate marooned themselves on the island, spent some time with the girls mainly getting along, then they left. Now we‘ve got a secret arms deal happening??? This is the craziest plot twist after plot twist that keeps working.

The ideal? What ideal? Says who? All they do is keep raising the bar, adding things we have to do or prettify or fix to be accepted. And we take the bait. We do it. That‘s what Miss Teen Dream represents. Well, not me.

This is the moment I knew I would love this book. Especially, right after, when most girls say they are above the pageant and want to make a Girls Con. And save themselves. When Adina made the comment that makeup is denigrating and objectifying, to which many others came back that it can be fun. That things don‘t have to be empowering all the time. #lgbtq #womanempowerment

Part of me wonders why I didn‘t start this book when I got it, and another part thinks this is a perfect Pride book. My jaw just keeps dropping. The way Libba is going about writing this trans character is so well done; I can feel her insane strength in holding on to who she is. That last question here, and her answer, explains it all. #lgbtq #transgender

Jennifer knew what lesbian meant, and she knew she properly was one. But she couldn‘t understand why God would hold that against her or Monica Mathers, who‘d never started a war or killed anybody, and who‘s deadeye three-pointers were straight up amazing. Afterall, hadn‘t god created both of them? But people were like that, she noticed. They invoke godly privilege at the weirdest of times and for the most stupid of reasons. #lgbtq

Adina is my favorite so far. Not just because NH is my state, but because I feel the same way about pageants. I also share her imagery of everything she is saying about the pageant. What I like about this book is how diverse each teen is; as we‘ve got all 50 states here, stranded on an island.

June 8: Today‘s selection is a comedy about what would happen to the survivors of an airplane crash if the plane was full of beauty pageant contestants? I don‘t usually go for absurd books like this, but this quickly became a favorite. Featured today for lgbtq characters including a #transgender character. I was not sure how I felt about this book at first, but I ordered it through libro.fm based on @Cinfhen ‘s recommendation. It was also my April #bookspin . I‘m so glad I did audio, and that I stuck with it!! I liked the satire and the narrator was great at performing the story! It tok a while because of barely driving- but worth it.

I think I would have preferred this in text, rather than on audio. It would probably be a fun movie... silly premise with a good overall message, but I didn't need more than a couple hours with these characters. The audio delivery was a little cartoon-y for my taste too. After 14 hours, I had really stopped caring. I like what the author set out to do with it though!

What the hell did I just read?? This was exactly what I needed, I think. A dark humor filled book that ends up being about a helluva lot more than beauty queens. Good stuff 😁

The premise is darkly humorous; a plane full of beauty pageant contestants crashes on a deserted island. The voices of the characters in the audio version were wonderful. I didn‘t realize it was narrated by the author until I had finished. I did think it was a little long, but overall a good listen.

A #blameitonlitsy & blame it on @Cinfhen audiobook pick. Cindy seemed to be having so much fun with it, I looked on Libby for a library audiobook & it was available so I snapped it up. It took me a while to get through 14 hours of audio but it was a silly, snicker-filled ride. I liked the feminist messages delivered by the teen beauty queens narrated in spot-on voices by the author herself. A bit over-the-top but it sure made my commutes fun! 🤣

I needed something lighter than Know My Name to listen to today so I am #audiosouping to this one instead. (I blame @Cinfhen for me checking out the library audiobook 😉) It‘s been my commute companion the past few days so I am about 1/2-way through & it‘s a bit nutty but I‘m loving the narration. The author does the voices so well. Today‘s soup is Ellie Krieger‘s Brazilian-Style Seafood Stew. Finished soup pics coming later.

Here‘s my second-last post of 2019! What a great audiobook this was, I absolutely loved it. It was very well-written and quite hilarious! The author reads her own book in the audio version, and she does a brilliant job. I honestly don't think I would have enjoyed the book nearly as much if I'd read a physical copy. The story also has a strong message and aptly explores femininity and the expectations society places on girls. Well worth reading.

This starts with a plane full of teenage beauty queens stranded on a deserted island and gets wackier from there, and just when you think things couldn‘t get more ridiculous it really goes off the rails! But somehow the narration makes this story come together and really sing. I had so much fun listening to this! Don‘t cheat yourself- is you‘re going to pick this up, go for the audiobook version! #wintergames #jingleballers #tbrread

⭐️⭐️⭐️ A satirical cross-section of Lord of the Flies, Miss Congeniality, and Survivor. It got a little too wacky at times, and definitely could‘ve been shorter, but overall it‘s clever and fun. Libba Bray‘s brilliant audio narration brings these purposefully stereotypical characters to life. Something light and funny was just what I needed during this insanely busy time of the year.

Started this yesterday & paused it in the middle of chapter 1 because I was having trouble concentrating on the story. For the first time in my life I‘m reading about a main character who shares my name & at 36 I‘m finding it a somewhat surreal experience.

I also saw a tv show character with my name for the first time last year. There is a LOT that needs to change in our world. But I do appreciate little reminders that a few things already are.

I was long overdue for a book like this! It wasn't just chock full of sarcasm, satire and snarky humor (although there was plenty, which is why I chose it) - it also touched on a deeper level with lessons I wish all people could learn. This should be required reading, especially for teenage girls. Best message of any YA book I've read this year.

1) This book is hilarious! I thought of it immediately. Great on audio too!
