It's Kind of a Funny Story
It's Kind of a Funny Story | Ned Vizzini
Like many ambitious New York City teenagers, Craig Gilner sees entry into Manhattan's Executive Pre-Professional High School as the ticket to his future. Determined to succeed at life-which means getting into the right high school to get into the right college to get the right job-Craig studies night and day to ace the entrance exam, and does. That's when things start to get crazy. At his new school, Craig realizes that he isn't brilliant compared to the other kids; he's just average, and maybe not even that. He soon sees his once-perfect future crumbling away.

I just thought it was average but it just didn‘t really hit the mark for me. I might check out the adaptation for it at some point.

These past few weeks has been insane, so I just finished my #doublespin for #bookspin. This book was okay, very preachy but maybe if I read it in a different point in life, I wouldn‘t have thought this way.

Day 20: For fun, I am going to post one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want. #bookstoread #tbrpile @StaceyKondla

This one was kind of disappointing. There is no way a psychiatric ward would not have group therapy and individual therapy. I read about the author afterwards though and it makes me sad he didn‘t get the help he needed ☹️

So I was listing to the audiobook for It‘s Kind Of A Funny Story and I heard this line. First I was like there is no way he actually wrote that. Google it and yup it is actually in the book. 🤦🏽‍♀️ Dude that‘s not how breast work. Anyone ever come across something this bad in a book that was off to a good start? #conversationstarter

One of my favorite books. A beautifully told story about a young man battling with depression. It's at times funny and awkward, other times sad and scary, but always very true and incredibly emotional.

On a personal note, Ned Vizzini helped me start my first writing workshop for students. He was a great guy, and even though his struggles ended tragically, his book lives on and continues to help a lot of people.

An important book for all ages .

Books with meaning are some of my favourites, this was so inspirational, funny, and sad at the same time. After reading this book I watched the movie, not going in with high expectations, but I wasn't disappointed at all!
Totally reccomend especially if you feel like you need a down to earth book.

Day 19 of #adventrecommends

It‘s Kind of a Funny Story is a semi-autobiographical YA novel about a teenager in a psychiatric hospital. This book and the movie adaptation have shown people that there is help for their depression and anxiety. It‘s been 5 years since the author, Ned Vizzini, took his own life, and I wish something was able to help him the way his words helped others.

Continuing with my #adventrecommends.
⛄Day 2
This book is everything.
It follows a boy named Craig who is dealing with depression and anxiety and his road to recovery/happiness.
It is a really fun book that deals with such a serious theme as mental illness.
It is written for younger audience (teens), but I think adults could enjoy it as well. Everyone should read it!

Day 16: a book you've read more than once #30daybookchallenge

This book saved and changed me. When I first read this in high school, I finally realized that I was not alone. I've suffered from depression for about 5 years now, but always had mood issues because of things from my childhood. This book makes me feel understood and I am so grateful for it!

So-so and a pick. Characters are interesting and engaging, and they go through great changes throughout the story. A bit slow again, and the plot seemed to just “fix itself”, but maybe that‘s the point.

Craig Gilner is determined to succeed at life - which means getting into the right high school to get into the right job. But once he gets in, the pressure becomes unbearable. He stops eating and sleeping until, one night, he nearly kills himself. Craig's suicidal episode gets him checked into a mental hospital. There, Craig is finally able to confront the sources of his anxiety.

I related to Craig way more than I expected before I started reading. The first half of the book was confusing to me because it felt great to relate but also it just brought me down. I loved it tho. The ending filled me with so many emotions. Reading about a teenage boy who, of course, goes through his first love and sexual attractions was a little frustrating. It got me facepalming while reading but at least it was authentic. Recommend!
