I had this on my kindle from ages ago, full disclosure I just got my first kindle a month ago. So I bought this at some point for some reason? I did have the kindle app on my iPad which died a few years ago so maybe it was for that. This was okay. It‘s YA and it feels like all the girl stories didn‘t come together, we got then and now, but not why and how or maybe I missed it 🤷🏻‍♀️

The close of summer seemed like a good time to finally pick this up. What a treat, and not at all what I‘d envisioned. Fu‘s a poet, so her prose is lyrical and erudite.

The overarching theme was how traumatic events in our formative years can reverberate throughout the rest of our lives. I loved the way Fu structured the novel to highlight that point.

There is some very beautiful writing in this, but I felt like it was a tumble to the end and somehow did not round out some of the more awkward corners 3 1/2 ⭐️s.

Five girls at a sleepaway camp go on an overnight camping trip where something goes very wrong. We are given this story one bit at a time while character studies of each girl as she grows into womanhood is interspersed. Despite the weak ending, I thought this was really good. (Goodreads calls this YA, but it definitely is not.)

This novel is a series of intimate portraits of several very different women who shared a traumatic experience as girls. Each woman's story was compelling but there is a lot of sadness and realism and no neat conclusions. I recommend if you enjoy character-driven stories.

Here‘s my #BookSpinBingo board🧡 I‘ve just finished The Lost Girls of Camp Forevermore, and I kind of wish I had bailed on it. The flashback scenes were intriguing, but the character follow ups were bland.

I really liked this book and went into it hesitant. I didn‘t know if a traumatic story about kids getting lost in the woods would captivate me but the format of this book was drastically different than that. Enthralling and what a beautiful writer Kim Fu is.

It's summer time and there's nothing I liked better when the weather is hot than a camp novel! I'm not big on thrillers, but set yours at a summer Camp and I am THERE. Some of my favorite (or most anticipated to read) camp novels. Or, in the case of Truly Devious, boarding school novels that feel like camp novels.

I honestly don‘t think we needed the camp aspect in here. This was five different stories of girls and their journeys to womanhood. Each just happens to have had a linking incident at camp. Each story is filled with uncertainty, disillusionment, and the swallowed articulations of what could make their lives better. Even though I felt cheated on the last girl‘s story this was a compelling pick overall.

Reviewsbylola I‘ve heard good things about this one so it‘s on my TBR. 5y

A compelling account of the coming-of-age of five young women whose lives intersect during a traumatic event. The structure and pacing made each section build upon the last. Also, I love the cover!

Started reading this last night. Had to put it down at 2 AM with 59% read. I‘m a zombie today, and the only reason I‘m not reading it right now is because I‘m too tired to focus on the words! The narrative style is a bit jumpy, but you get used to it quickly, and it works!

This review is for Fu‘s short story “In This Fantasy”. The narrator is a woman with fantasies: she is a landlady watching a young woman have an affair and kill her abusive husband; she is in a cabin encountering a wolf outside; she is a princess on the morning of a revolution- feeling something for the first time; she is in her own life with children and fantasies of divorce, affairs, child abandonment- with love, freedom and regret.

myers85 Great review. Going to see if my library has a copy! 5y
Booksnchill @myers85 thanks- this is a short story that is part of the 2018 Advent Calendar- I don‘t know if it is part of a published collection but will check onthat - I just tagged a book by the author for the review. She is very good. (edited) 5y

What did others make of the fact that Andee‘s chapter focuses on her sister?

TheKidUpstairs I would have liked Andee's story, rather than Kayla's story and her perspectives on her sister's life. It's one of the things that didn't entirely work for me with this one. But I know others quite liked the way it was told, I think @Lindy was a fan? 5y
Lindy @TheKidUpstairs It worked for me because this whole novel is about how we experience things differently than others who go through the same thing. Andee and her sister have the same upbringing, but their lives are so different as adults. 5y

I do have to say that Kim Fu is a wonderful writer. Yet, I just didn‘t enjoy 65% of this book. It centers around 5 girls that are abandoned on a camp trip after their leader dies, resulting in them being lost in the woods in a “Lord of the Flies” type way. THAT part was good. The rest of the book was short stories about the girls‘ lives, that were hardly even connected to the “event”. One wasn‘t even about the girl from the camp, but her sister.

I am giving this a “pick” because it was very compelling but it could have been a lot better. I know some people don‘t like the non-linear structure but I liked that. I just think the author could have delved deeper into each character and the ending was very abrupt. It felt unfinished to me. I still enjoyed it more than a so-so. #summerreading

Perfect hot summer weather reading. I loved the approach of each girl‘s past and future being fully told in turn with the big event at Camp Forevermore anchoring everyone. I think a few things could have been flushed out a little more, especially since it was under 250 pages but still a very satisfying book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Finished this after work this evening. Meh. I feel like the chapters concerning what happened to the girls at camp and what their lives were like after were too disjointed. It seems like something like what they went through together would have bigger, more long-lasting impacts on them. And the ending didn‘t make much sense to me. It was alright, nothing great.

Not sure what to make of this ending, it feels as if there's something missing.. Or maybe because it was a shorter chapter? Idk overall it wasn't bad, the back and forth of the chapters depicting the girls in different stages of life were written well but i just didn't connect to them.

I could not be happier to finally be done with this book, to be perfectly frank. It sounded so good in the jacket description, but then...it just didn‘t live up to it, for me. Disjointed and even sort of bland, it didn‘t feel finished. I might be in the minority in not liking this, but such is life. #thelostgirlsofcampforevermore #kimfu
