Anno Dracula
Anno Dracula | Kim Newman
It is 1888 and Queen Victoria has remarried, taking as her new consort Vlad Tepes, the Wallachian Prince infamously known as Count Dracula. Peppered with familiar characters from Victorian history and fiction, the novel follows vampire Genevieve Dieudonne and Charles Beauregard of the Diogenes Club as they strive to solve the mystery of the Ripper murders. "Anno Dracula" is a rich and panoramic tale, combining horror, politics, mystery and romance to create a unique and compelling alternate history. Acclaimed novelist Kim Newman explores the darkest depths of a reinvented Victorian London."

Jack the Ripper is terrorizing London, with the twist that Dracula defeated and killed Van Helsing and is now the Prince Consort of England. And vampires live side by side with the “warm.” Great premise and I enjoyed most of it, but I found it overly bloated with characters and unnecessary storylines.

Now that I‘m rested & back at it again, I can post my review of this fabulous book. This “alternate history” story is a mashup of Dracula & Jack The Ripper & was fun from start to finish. In a Victorian London where The Ripper stalks the streets, Vlad Tepes has married & turned the Queen, making England a haven for vampires of all kinds. But something rotten is seething at the core of high society. #ReadHarder2019 #AnAlternateHistoryNovel

I‘m 1 1/2hrs into #Bk6 Of the #24in48 #readathon & I‘m loving it! A mashup of Dracula & Jack The Ripper, it‘s set in an alternate Victorian London where Queen Vic has married the Prince Of Wallachia-Vlad The Impaler. Being a vampire is suddenly popular until a murderer called “Silver Knife” starts butchering vampire girls in Whitechapel. So far it‘s brilliant.

I'm choosing pick because the story itself was brilliant, I just wish I'd been reading it in print!
Genevieve and Beauregard were amazing, as was Jack the Ripper in his madness. It took a little while to get going, and a little longer for me to get all the characters figured out, but it was well written and fun to read.
The name dropping got a little out of hand especially when the characters didn't actually feature half the time!
#TBRChallenge 🖤

Vinjii I tried and was just lost because I didn‘t know who half the people were. What do I need to know to appreciate the book? 7mo
TCLinrow @Vinjii Half of the people it introduces at the beginning are just there to give context or set something up for later. Their names don't matter too much, but you only really realise that quite far in to it. To appreciate it I would say focus on Beauregard, Genevieve and Jack, and don't worry too much about the others 7mo

Definitely getting the hang of the characters now, which is great because it's making the story more interesting 🧡 a little annoying that it took half of the book to get there though 😕

So I'm nearly 4 hours in now and I'm starting to get the hang of the characters now (or at least I think I am 😅). I think this is definitely a book that would work better in print for me. The name dropping this book does is fun, but maybe a touch over the top? 🤔

#TBRChallenge update (because I'm actually gonna stick with it this time): tactical last minute substitution of The Chalk Man for Anno Dracula since I'm already a ways in 🎧
Its going well but I'm still a little hazy on some of the characters (far too many different English Gentleman) although I am 100% team Genevieve 🖤

Right now I'm in the mood for some sci-fi though so I'm gonna give Stars Uncharted a go ⭐🌟⭐

Happy reading! ❤💜💙

Getting a start on my #TBRChallenge with this audio book 🎧
I'm enjoying the story, but I'm struggling to get the characters straight in my head. Genevieve and Beauregard (most of the time) I can follow, but there are so many minor (I think) characters that confuse me 🤔
I'm sticking with it, but I'm thinking that this one would be better in print... even though I really like the narrator, there just seem to be too many English Gentlemen!

TCLinrow Just remembered I changed my mind last minute 🤪 I decided I wanted to read this book instead 😂 This shows you I shouldn't pick books before I've had my morning tea ☺ 7mo

There are so many things I really liked about this book, and yet somehow, it just wasn‘t as awesome as I had hoped.

An alternate history, where Dracula is real, but Van Helsing failed to kill him... Queen Victoria has remarried and now Vlad is the prince consort, vampires are out and people are choosing to turn, England a bloody police state, and Jack the Ripper is at large. Continued in comments...

⭐️⭐️⭐️

sprainedbrain I enjoyed the mix of real (Billy the Kid, Alfred Tennyson, Bram Stoker, Oscar Wilde, many more) and fictional (Dr. Jekyll, Lestrade, Bill Sikes, many more) characters, but it got to be a bit too much. Not sure if I will continue the series. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 13mo

This was the Victorian supernatural classic equivalent of Ready Player One, but better.
The first important thing to note is that Count Dracula was not killed. Instead he has turned Queen Victoria and is now Prince Consort. The story then follows the Jack the Ripper murders and the way this world is changed.
This was fun, not perfect. It slogged a bit, especially in the middle, and I think it suffers a bit from 'first in a series' syndrome.

I finally finished Anno Dracula - it was okay, but I was disappointed that Newman introduced so many fictional and real life contemporaries and then did nothing with them.

On a different note, I'm in a major book slump. For the third weekend in a row I haven't completed a single book! (Normally I can easily chew through two or three books in a weekend.)

Send help!

Grrlbrarian Isn't that Reaper from Overwatch chilling with Deadpool? I recommend a re-read of your fave childhood read(s) for the book slump 👍 2y
Billypar It looks like you're a memoir fan based on your read list. I've read several great ones this year (though all had much attention so I'm sure you're already aware of them). I'd recommend Hunger, H is for Hawk, Brown Girl Dreaming, and The Clancy's of Queens. Hope the slump ends soon! 2y

hlgreenfield Slumps just happen! I had a major one last month, but now I am back on form - I try to either just focus on other stuff ( watch movies, series etc and leave books for a little while) or try more light stuff - graphic novels are easier reads or re-reading some favourites which also works! 2y
