1) I was until junior high when my family moved, and I went from a school where trying hard and doing well were cool to a school where doing those things got you targeted by bullies. So I hid out for a few years, then when we moved again in high school to another high-caliber school district, it took me a while to rebuild my skills. I still did decently through high school and college.

pickWhen I was a kid (a long time ago, actually Ramona is only around six years older than I am), I had a few of the Ramona books. And although I read them over and over, and loved them, and sort of vaguely knew there were more in the series, I never sought out the rest of them. I'm fixing that oversight now, filling in the gaps in my Ramona reading. These books are classics. Cleary has a way of bringing back exactly what a 1970s childhood was like.

In this installment, Ramona has to be brave in the first grade. Her teacher doesn‘t appreciate her, her deskmate is a copycat, there‘s a scary new bedroom, and a dog steals her shoe! Yikes!

This girl was knee-deep in fantasy novels, but as for non-magical characters she admired, she wanted to be Ramona. Ramona showed young me to take charge and dream-- and that girls could have awesome, hair-brained schemes, too.
