Well at first this was a really interesting read, but then the unnecessary sexism and racism happened so that takes a lot of enjoyment out of this survival story. This topic always comes up when reading older works but just because it was acceptable back then, it isn't an excuse not to talk about the harm it does or did. A work of fiction is not exempt from criticism.

Doppoetry There is a lot of brutality, animal abuse, and human grief throughout the book. I don't doubt that this probably happened to some dogs in real life during that time period, I don't think it's appropriate for ages 9-12, or at least 9 through 10, you would traumatize those kids. 😅 some of the abuse descriptions are very graphic.

Some sources say that a lot of it deals with the author's own life and hardships and MC represents that.
2w
Doppoetry Overall it is a story about adversity and adaptability, but I also think it could have been executed better. Some themes could have been explored further, relationships between the dogs and their owners etc. 2w

When the long winter nights come on and the wolves follow their meat into the lower valleys, he may be seen running at the head of the pack through the pale moonlight or glimmering borealis, leaping gigantic above his fellows, his great throat a-bellow as he sings a song of the younger world, which is the song of the pack.

AnnCrystal 💝. Been wanting to visit the Jack London's estate up in Central/Northern California. It seems a beautiful place. 🐺📚🐺. 12mo
dabbe @AnnCrystal That would be incredible, wouldn't it? 🤩 12mo
AnnCrystal @dabbe absolutely incredible 😉👍.

The funny thing, we learned about the Jack London park after we stopped really going on our northern vacations. My mom and brother were both born in Sacramento, CA. I spent my childhood visiting the area at least once a year 💝.

We spent most of our time in Tahoe, at the Old Ponderosa Ranch (Bonanza TVshow) recreation park. Wish that place was still open. Oh, wonderful times 🤠💝.

Really need to make the trip!

AnnCrystal @dabbe and @Eggs. Truly Beautiful, Peaceful, and Wonderful. Oh, I miss the lake in Tahoe...

No wonder Jack London chose Northern California to settle himself, one of those places where the atmosphere is incredibly inspiring.

I was going to give this book a thumbs up mainly for nostalgia‘s sake and because I found it a riveting read as a junior high kid, but I doubt that I‘d be able to bear reading it now due to the heart-wrenching suffering those poor sled dogs endure. In fact, maybe I‘m more traumatized than anything else because I still remember the fate of some in particular like poor Curly, Billee, Dave. It‘s a well-written book but rather unsettling to read.

This is another one my son has to read for English this year, so decided to read, too. I give it a “meh”. I wasn‘t really into the storyline, and felt bad for Buck.

Jack London‘s Cabin in Dawson City, YT 🇨🇦 This one was moved from down Henderson‘s Creek into Dawson. Additionally, its original logs were split with a twin cabin in Oakland, California.

Home from out road trip to Dawson. I loved learning more about the literary history of my Klondike favorites.

Blueberry I've been to the Jack London State Park a number of times in Glen Ellen, CA where the ruins of the Wolf House are and where he was buried. He was only 40 yrs old when he died! He had very bad health but he sure did a lot in his short life. 1y
Blueberry I think you just inspired me to read another of his books. 1y
Saknicole @Blueberry yes! Always time for some London reading. I‘ve been in such the mood too. 1y

Buck did not read the newspapers, or he would have known that trouble was brewing, not alone for himself, but for every tide-water dog, strong of muscle and with warm, long hair, from Puget Sound to San Diego.

I read this as a teen and I remember enjoying it, but not much else. I decided to read it for this month‘s #tbrdeckofcards, and to be honest it didn‘t age well. I was overwhelmed by the animal torture and actually kept reading just to try to get to a point where I would begin to feel better, but I think I‘m just too old for this one. I kept thinking “I LIKED this?!?”

Coffeymuse I hate when books aren't what you remembered. Thanks for playing this month, though! Hopefully next month will be better! 2y
Bklover I‘m still glad I read it! Sometimes I comment on somebody‘s post that I‘d read whatever book they‘re talking about and that I loved it. I need to be careful when it‘s a book I read 40 years ago. I used to LOVE The Thorn Birds and tried to reread a while back and couldn‘t get through the first 50 pages. 🙄😉😅 2y

#OnThisDay in 1897 the Klondike gold rush had captured the hearts and dreams of countless men and women, and a group embarked from California to try their luck in the north. Among them was 21 year old Jack London. He never did find the precious metal, but you could say he still struck gold. What he found were stories, and those stories made him a household name synonymous with adventure in the Yukon. #HistoryGetsLIT

I had to read this book when I was either in middle school or high school, but didn‘t really remember anything about it. My boyfriend wanted to listen to a short audiobook on our way back from a short out of state road trip, so we decided on this.

It was pretty good, I liked both the story and the author‘s writing style.

(An aside: I‘ve now visited 14 out of the 50 states)

I needed a break from long novels.

A tale of a dog named Buck who moves from California to the cold of the Yukon and his little adventures to becoming wild.

I can remember buying this Apple Classic edition at a school book fair. When I read it, I was transported and fell in love with the setting and Buck. 🐶 Several movies have been made based on this timeless tale, but my favorite is the 93 version with Rick Schroder.

Eggs Thanks for the movie recommendation! 3y

This was a fantastic book and I wish there was more! I enjoyed reading from Buck's point of view and Landon did a great job of not making it sound like an actual animal was writing about survival. It wasn't cheesy like most animal point of view books are but realistic! Landon's figurative word choice of “the call“ made me almost jealous of Buck because I want to experience that call; whether it be the wild or just everyday life around me.

A rough read with more animal cruelty/violence than I expected from a middle grade. It was gut-wrenching even though it is relatively short & quick paced. I had to read it in small sections & then step away for a while. The writing was good & the book is worth the read, but I felt that it needed to be fleshed out a little more. I see value in the read & there is an appropriate audience, but it wasn't for me. Do not recommend for sensitive readers.

I honestly couldn‘t remember if I read this as a kid. Turns out, I hadn‘t. While I did not care for the mistreatment of Buck and the other dogs (I cringed several times), it was a good story. Very action-packed. And the narrator did a fantastic job!

So this was a super cute book. I am really thought I had read it before but I think I had read White Fang and got them confused in my head. Or I read this way too long ago that I forgot a lot about it. Anyway Buck reminds me of our Maverick. Super smart, gorgeous but.. sometimes a bit wild!
