Wicked Autumn
Wicked Autumn: A Max Tudor Novel | G. M. Malliet
36 posts | 30 read | 27 to read
What could be more dangerous than cozy village life in the English countryside? Max Tudor has adapted well to his post as vicar of St. Edwold's in the idyllic village of Nether Monkslip. The quiet village seems the perfect home for Max, who has fled a harrowing past as an MI5 agent. Now he has found a measure of peace among urban escapees and yoga practitioners, artists and crafters and New Agers. But this new-found serenity is quickly shattered when the highly vocal and unpopular president of the Women's Institute turns up dead at the Harvest Fayre. The death looks like an accident, but Max's training as a former agent kicks in, and before long he suspects foul play. Max has ministered to the community long enough to be familiar with the tangled alliances and animosities among the residents, but this tragedy surprises and confounds him. It is impossible to believe anyone in his lovely village capable of the crime, and yet given the victim, he must acknowledge that almost everyone had probably fantasized about killing Wanda Batton-Smythe. As the investigation unfolds, Max becomes more intricately involved. Memories he'd rather not revisit are stirred, evoking the demons from the past which led him to Nether Monkslip. In WICKED AUTUMN, G.M. Malliet serves up an irresistible English villagedeliciously skewereda flawed but likeable protagonist, and a brilliantly modern version of the traditional drawing room mystery. One of The Boston Globe's Best Mysteries of 2011 One of Library Journal's Best Mystery Books of 2011

🍂 First one I thought of
🍁 I have a pile of holiday books that I grab from, based on my mood. And I always read A Christmas Carol in December.

I got this book off of a Book Riot list that was full of different types of mysteries. I really liked this one. Basically Father Brown but a little darker I think.

Max used to be MI5 and now is a vicar in a small village and then there is a murder at charity fall fair and Max helps the police solve the crime.

I definitely will continue this series!

#CozySwap #CozyAesthetic I‘m fairly new to cozy mysteries ( I tend to lean toward the mystery thriller) but have read the three pictured here and am excited to read more. A fire in the fire place, a cozy chair, a warm blanket, coffee/tea, a good book! This is my cozy aesthetic.

1. It depends if I like the book enough. If I don‘t, I‘ll donate or put in a Little Free Library. But I usually keep them for a while.

2. Right now Wicked Autumn (tagged). For some reason I‘m really interested in reading this mystery series! I got it off of a Book Riot list, but I forget which one.

“Working” (#audioknitting) “remotely” (on the back patio) before it gets too miserable outside. ☀️🥵😬 #Hotlanta

Also remembering why cozy mysteries aren‘t for me. But only an hour left so I‘ll finish. If it weren‘t a British narrator, then I would have bailed long ago.

A cozy mystery set in a picturesque English village peopled by interesting characters- especially our sleuth in the person of a dashing vicar/former MI5 operative! I quite enjoyed this. One quibble: when we found out who dunnit, the culprit and the method were a little convoluted. Still, I'll give the next in the series a try at some point. 😁👍

Andrew65 Those English villages are deadly! Keep out of them at risk of your life! 5y
bookandbedandtea @Andrew65 I've noticed that! Especially at harvest and during snowstorms. 😉 5y
Andrew65 @bookandbedandtea And also at any fairs! 5y

I really wanted to like it, but... It took forever for anything to happen in the book. The whole thing was a bit unrealistic when the culprit was revealed. I‘d like to realistically be able to at least guess whodunnit although the book. It definitely did not work as an ebook for me. The setting was great and the sleuth has potential.

EadieB @Tove_Reads I read this one too a few years back. I would consider it a cozy mystery and kind of milder than the books we are reading now. 6y

So often I select audiobooks for the narrators I love and this one is no exception but- happy surprise- I enjoyed the story. The first of a series of Max Tudor mysteries- Max is now the Vicar of Nether Monkslip after leaving MI-5. Great characters, good plotting and just the tiniest splash of Wodehouse. I will read further in this series for just enjoyable mystery stories. 👍👍🥳🥳

LouLouLane Sounds great! 6y
Booksnchill @LouLouLane it was fun- the character names are very wodehousian! 6y

I thought I‘d love this cozy mystery. The detective is ex-M15 and an Anglican priest. I was really bored for most of the novel and the only character with any depth at all was the murder victim. I felt the writing was subpar and didn‘t capture my imagination. Does the series improve?

This reminded me of the Grantchester mysteries - the vicar in the remote English village solves the crime. It was okay. It seemed like the scene-setting in the beginning went on too long, and the end dragged out too long for me. #LetterW #LitsyAtoZ

🍁⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🍁4 Stars!

Vicar Max Tudor, former MI5 operative, plans to enjoy the peace of his countryside parish. When a parishioner is found dead under mysterious circumstances, Max finds his former life is weaving into his current one. An assortment of villagers round out an ensemble that will keep you entertained throughout the entire book. Looking forward to book two.
