My second book by the offspring of Stephen King. What a story! A universal pandemic that causes people to spontaneously combust and the fight of a woman who just won‘t quit. 5 ⭐️
I really enjoyed this story! I could see some inspiration from The Stand, HP‘s the phoenix, Fahrenheit 451 etc. Basically a mushroom spore sickens people and causes them to burn up so the world is in the midst of an apocalypse. A group of sick people find themselves at a summer camp turned commune of sorts but when a division occurs, survival is amped up. I loved that Martha Quinn keeps their hopes up 😂
This pains me greatly. I really like Joe Hill‘s short stories. But this is over 700 pages of generic post apocalypse ‘humans suck‘ tribalism, with a chemistry less love story at the center. Nothing here works, and it takes ages to slog through. The self immolation disease known as ‘Dragonscale‘ is the only interesting thing here. That it was not exploited in more interesting ways is a disappointment.
Can I not call in “My book is too good for me to come to work tomorrow?” That‘s a thing, right? 🔥
This book surprised me. I‘m not sure how it ended up in my kindle library, but I‘m glad it did. I do enjoy a good end-of-the-world pandemic/apocalypse book and the twist in this one was really interesting. I laughed, I cried, and I enjoyed following along with Harper et al.
Tackle the TBR 🤓📚💓

What are you reading? 😊
Since I was introduced to Libby, I started to see if I could listen to books I‘ve hoarded. Audio books are easier for me now especially since I start graduate school back up next week, and I love working and listening. Trying to get in some physical reading coupled with it as well, it‘s kind of nice to have both avenues when reading a book! And It‘s almost spooky season right?? 🎃

Not sure of too many Litsy Authors but know Joe Hill has an account.

I love when my current read references one of my favorites (or at least appears to).
Tough at times to read during our own pandemic, but absolutely brilliant. This book made me want to gobble up all 700 and whatever pages in a single sitting. I loved each character and loved hating some of them too.
We're literally being slow cooked in this heat 🥵
Going to pick a new read soon, I've been having bother making my mind up of what to read next! 😏
@LostInSpace 😍
Facebook tells me it‘s 5 years since I met Joe Hill at an author event! When such things happened 😁
While I enjoyed the book along with the great characters & world building, there just wasn't a lot of story going on here to warrant almost 800 pages.
There were moments that just dragged on endlessly, but those were balanced by some spectacular sequences and plot twists.
In short: Entertaining, but overblown.
Not the best book to read during a pandemic. The characters were too captivating to put the book down once I started. There were several really gory scenes in this book that I did not think were needed. Overall, a solid 3 star for me.
1. Yes - I just got.it. It is very plush, soft and fluffy.
2. Yes - I just purchased some Christmas books and look forward to reading those in December.

This was good. It was long, but it was good. I liked that Allie, the teenager, was portrayed realistically – at least I thought so. Good and bad, temperamental, like a teenager. We also had some crazy characters and some power-hungry ones. I do wonder if there will be a sequel.
This was our Sept pick for book club. I liked it a lot. If you start to really dissect it, some parts don't make much sense, but it was enjoyable. I do wish the ending would have been more complete.
There was so little I liked about this book and I totally flipped through the last 100 pages without really seeing any words on the page. I want 7 days of my life back...

I don't remember half these characters.
I don't care about Harper.
Who even knows who Martha Quinn is anymore?
Nobody speaks in 1980s epithets.
Please explode from Dragonscale already.
This is one of the most uninspired books I've ever read, besides King using Matheson's short stories to write novels. ? The language is all outdated King crap (when was the last time you heard the word "snatch" used to describe female anatomy?!) and the characters are sad rip offs of The Stand... most blatant. It's so disappointing because when Hill doesn't feel like he has to copy Daddy, he's got great storytelling ability.
“It‘s so fucking cheap when people say I love you. It‘s a name to stick on a surge of hormones, with a little hint of loyalty thrown in. I‘ve never liked saying it. Here‘s what I say: We‘re together, now and until the end. You have everything I need to be happy. You make me feel right.”

I guess it's nice to be able to recycle annoying characters and not have to think too hard about it... 🙄 Am I being catty? Yes, yes I think I am... 🐱
I liked this but it slowed down in the middle considerably, it's like Joe Hill had a beginning and an ending set out and filled in the middle while writing; which is okay obviously but I felt like the story sort of dragged on in the middle and I found it hard to care about what was going on.
It read like a YA novel, I'm not saying that's bad or anything; I guess I went into it with high expectations due to The Stand comparison.
3/5 Pick! 💫
Harper Grayson had seen lots of people burn on TV, everyone had, but the first person she saw burn for real was in the playground behind the school. 🔥

Three quarters through this book, review coming soon. 😬
Still powerless at home and out of sorts living with my in laws. 😭 So far, Dragonscale is the most interesting thing about this book. It's like Joe Hill went through Daddy's closet playing dress up and came out with all King's old crap on a new body. 🙄 The pathology of the spore interests me, the characters, so far, are not. Renaming characters from The Stand and changing their genders doesn't hold water for me... *deep breath*
Camped out by the pool at my in laws, who also lost power for a bit today, and brought this from home. It might not have been the best choice during #Coronapocalypse...

I give up!
It's so slow and nothing happens.
I had high hopes for this and was looking forward to reading it.
My #bookspin and #doublespin picks were not for me right now, so I applied the numbers to the books in my Nook app... this one was an easy and different horror read... although a bit unsettling in pandemic times.
This is getting harder and harder to put down! My second #chunksterchallenge2020 is at about 55% done!
#7days7books Day 4
Seven books that left a deep impression on me or changed me.
About 38% through my second #chunksterchallenge2020
Read while I waited on the impromptu Easter parade we threw together before the stay at home order started. We were supposed to do it on Saturday! Got about 15% through my #chunksterchallenge2020 book #2
Ok Les Mis was literally killing me. I could feel myself slowly dying so I put it back on the shelf and pulled down this one for my second #ChunksterChallenge2020
These are the 3 books I have picked for #NewYearWhoDis with @Jemmygem.
I'm starting with The Fireman by Joe Hill because I already own it the other 2 I'm getting from the library.

I listened to 'Chim Chim Che-ree' through the whole book and read it in one and a half days.
Enjoyed how Hill wrote his female protagonist. "I like the idea of being so big I can easily trample over lesser beings" - about being heavily pregnant. And obsessed with Mary Poppins. Spit spot.
You could literally read book 1 and 9 and get the story. The middle was drawn out.
#GratefulReads Day 7: My #FavoriteBookishItem will have to be bookmarks. Here are the bookmarks my husband helped me create/print out for my #ScreamsByMail #HorrorPostalBookClub. :)
I believe this is a case of Who is your daddy and What does he do? This was not even a horror book!
I did absolutely nothing this past week...nothing
