Rapture in Death | J D Robb
27 posts | 58 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
The year is 2056. mood-altering drugs are legal, prostitution is licensed, virtual-reality games have replaced TV sets for entertainment and New York supercop Eve Dallas continues her sleuthing in Robb's fourth installment in the Death series (Naked in Death, Glory in Death, etc.). This time around, Eve has married her soul mate, Roarke, and is caught up in the puzzling suicide of a technician who's been working on Roarke's unfinished space resort. The young tech, Eve learns, had cheerfully hanged himself after a VR trip. Back on Earth, autopsies from two similar suicides reveal a pin-sized burn on the brains of the victims. All clues point to a deadly subliminal message in a VR toy?one that Roarke produces. This is sexy, gritty, richly imagined suspense. The fact that it is written by Nora Roberts under the pseudonym J.D. Robb is a tribute to her versatility.

#IDLR: Ch:16-20: Eve is determined to find her killer and she‘s determined to have that killer be Jess Barrow. True, he‘s a prick who delves too deeply into her and Roarke‘s minds and played games with her and the people she loves - but does that make him a killer? Mira doesn‘t think so and Eve decides to seek a second opinion (how awkward) from Rhianna. But just as she gets the go ahead from Whitney, Eve realizes Rhianna is behind it all. ⬇️

StayCurious Was anyone surprised by this? I was thinking it was both her and William so that was a bit of a surprise, and to think she had no idea about the effects of her experiments on her victims‘ brains. I found this was a very fascinating concept - mind control and the power of suggestion- aren‘t we already seeing hints of that today with advertisers listening in on our conversations through our phones (creepy). ⬇️ (edited) 7mo
StayCurious To think what can come of VR gaming in just a few years is a bit worrisome.

This book places an emphasis on Eve, but we also caught glimpses of Roarke‘s darkness and what he does to keep it at bay. I also liked the strengthening of bonds in this book - btw Eve and Peabody, Roarke and Feeney and Roarke and Mavis. I look forward to more of this relationship building in future books.

Librarybelle I had started to get a little suspicious of Reeanna when the case against Jesse fell apart. It was a good red herring! She just seemed too eager to help. What a scary concept - Roberts/Robb wrote a really good thriller!! 7mo
ShananigansReads I knew Jess was sus when after we first met him Eve and Roarke lost their minds in the car but he didn't seem like he could pull it all off. It took a bit longer to become suspicious of Rhianna but I blamed her right before Eve realized it. This was such a good installment and so scary.when you think of real life implications. I hope this stays on the pages of books but you never know. 7mo
LiseWorks I so agree with the relationship building, and thanks to those members who journeyed with us for this series so far. Can't wait for the next one 7mo
TheAromaofBooks I really love our five chapter/week pace because it means when we get to the final five chapters I can just blaze right through to the end 😂 This one got really intense. With a long-standing series like this, the author keeps introducing various secondary characters so at first I thought Rhianna may be one of those. But when the case against Jess started to fall apart, she seemed a little too convenient. I really liked how this book felt more ⬇ 7mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) futuristic than some of the earlier books, with a murder method that isn't quite within our current society's realm... yet... 7mo

Another great entry in the In Death series. This one involves some super scary technology. I love watching Eve grow as a person and become more comfortable in her skin. Looking forward to the next #InDeathLongReadalong !

#InDeathLongReadalong #IDLR: Sorry for the late post! Ch.11-15: Still convinced there is a connection between the suicides, Eve is even more certain once she comes face to face with a woman who kills herself right in front of her. Eve knows this woman was somehow coerced and begins to worry that it‘s a VR unit that Roarke manufactured that is the culprit. But how can such a thing be possible? ⬇️

StayCurious When she asks Roarke he has no idea if it can be done but insists he didn‘t do this. So who did? At Mavis‘ big party, Roarke gets coerced into hurting Eve, something he would never do in his right mind - it rings too true to the suicides. Eve realizes it was Jess and his music console that were behind what happened to Roarke. And both she and Roarke want blood. We don‘t know exactly what Roarke does to Jess behind closed doors. ⬇️ 7mo
StayCurious I doubt we want to know. We see a dark part of Roark that he mostly keeps hidden. But can Eve pin the murders on Jess? (edited) 7mo
See All 7 Comments
Librarybelle Yeah…we probably don‘t want to know what Roarke did! 7mo
LiseWorks Considering what Roarke went through with his Dad and what he had to do living in the streets in Ireland, i think we know what he did before. But somehow, I don't think Jess is the mastermind behind this. 7mo
willaful I think Jess is too obvious. Someone is using him, maybe.

That was a really disturbing scene. I find it hard to believe Eve wouldn't have been a lot more upset than she was, especially with her history.

Also not loving the cops covering for each other. Hits too close to home.
7mo
CatLass007 @willaful I also found Eve‘s reaction to being sexually assaulted in a closet by her own husband unbelievable. If Roarke was influenced by Jess, is it possible that Eve was influenced by Jess also? 7mo

#InDeathLongReadalong #IDLR: Ch.6-10: Eve continues working the case and starts to wonder if there is a connection between Fitzhugh and Mathias, and another apparent suicide of a senator. The cases don‘t seem to have anything in common but Eve senses something in her gut and can‘t turn away.⬇️

StayCurious We meet Jess Barrow who clearly wants Roarke to invest in his musical toy. There‘s also an allusion to him being able to control the actions of Eve and Roarke, make them turned on so they can‘t keep their hands off each other. Creepy. And then he doctors a demo disk of Mavis and is that the reason Eve tumbles into another nightmare? We find out that Mathias and the senator also have that strange burn on the brain…what could have caused this anomaly (edited) 7mo

TheAromaofBooks Jess is such a creep!! I'm really intrigued to find out more about this “brain mark“ - I feel like Robb is really starting to lean into the futuristic aspect of the world-building by creating a story/murder method that wouldn't be a possibility earlier in time, if that makes sense haha 7mo

#IDLR #InDeathLongReadalong @LiseWorks Book4: Ch.1-5: Eve and Roarke are on their ultra-rich honeymoon (not jealous at all) on Roarke‘s space resort, when they are interrupted by what appears to be a suicide. A young man has hanged himself with no explanation. Eve tries to put it aside as she returns home and gets back to work. ⬇️

StayCurious With Peabody now as her aide, they run across another suicide - or is it murder? Eve doesn‘t buy that the smug, arrogant lawyer she dealt with in court many times would kill himself. And then, the ME discovers something strange: a burn on the brain. What could have caused that? ⬇️ 8mo
StayCurious Meanwhile, Eve meets two scientists that work for Roarke, and she starts to realize that she‘s going to have to up her social game when it comes to being Roarke‘s wife. And Mavis has a new backer for her music-someone named Jess Barrow. Is he scamming Mavis or is he the real deal? We are getting to know Peabody more, her background, and she‘s starting to be more comfortable with Eve. (edited) 8mo

#InDeathLongReadalong #IDLR Our next book is book 4 in the series and, like last month, we will aim to do 5 chapters a week, with mini discussions on Sundays, and final discussion on April 28th. We felt that pace worked well. From memory, this one deals again with hard topics so take care to look at the triggers beforehand. I‘m so enjoying our journey and look forward to your thoughts on Rapture in Death!

Read four in this series and think I am going to give it up for this series. Good storylines in the main, some good characterisation but just too much sex. Felt like a rape scene of his wife in this one which is why I have given it a pan. This series just clearly isn‘t for me. #UnpopularOpinion

⭐⭐⭐⭐
I'm glad I stuck with this series through the first few books. Not that they weren't good, but they weren't amazing either. This one, book 4, is definitely my favorite so far. Eve and Roarke are really starting to grow on me, and I love several of the secondary characters, like Peabody and Mavis. It's always exciting to find a long (like 50 books long) new series.

AileenRR I‘m gonna have to pick up this series again. It feels like a decade since I read the first 6 or 7 books, and now you‘ve got me missing it 😊 (edited) 4y

Okay, I can't figure this site out. How to just sit and add books once a week or so is beyond me and I don't want to write a review on every book I read. Face it, I have like TEN books to add today to catch up and I am not a paid reviewer. My experience is sooner or later someone will be hateful to me and I am done with that. Sorry, checking out now.

A possible suicide intrudes on Eve & Roarke‘s honeymoon off planet. On their return, more people seemingly ‘self terminate‘ with a smile on their face.

It was an interesting enough case but far too much focus on romance for me. 3.5🌟

This series is such a fun guilty pleasure for me! Actually, I don't feel all that guilty about it, I love me some romantic suspense. And it's fun watching the various character relationships develop. It will probably take me a decade to work my way through the whole series, but I'll keep chipping away. 4 down, 42 to go!

Still love Roarke ♥️ #litsypartyofone #romantsy
