Forest of Hands and Teeth
Forest of Hands and Teeth | Carrie Ryan
In Mary's world there are simple truths. The Sisterhood always knows best. The Guardians will protect and serve. The Unconsecrated will never relent. And you must always mind the fence that surrounds the village; the fence that protects the village from the Forest of Hands and Teeth. But, slowly, Mary's truths are failing her. She's learning things she never wanted to know about the Sisterhood and its secrets, and the Guardians and their power. And, when the fence is breached and her world is thrown into chaos, about the Unconsecrated and their relentlessness. Now, she must choose between her village and her future, between the one she loves and the one who loves her. And she must face the truth about the Forest of Hands and Teeth. Could there be life outside a world surrounded in so much death? [STAR] "A bleak but gripping story...Poignant and powerful."-Publishers Weekly, Starred "A postapocalyptic romance of the first order, elegantly written from title to last line."-Scott Westerfeld, author of the Uglies series and Leviathan "Intelligent, dark, and bewitching, The Forest of Hands and Teeth transitions effortlessly between horror and beauty. Mary's world is one that readers will not soon forget."-Cassandra Clare, bestselling author of City of Bones"Opening The Forest of Hands and Teeth is like cracking Pandora's box: a blur of darkness and a precious bit of hope pour out. This is a beautifully crafted, page-turning, powerful novel. I thoroughly enjoyed it."-Melissa Marr, bestselling author of Wicked Lovely and Ink Exchange "Dark and sexy and scary. Only one of the Unconsecrated could put this book down."-Justine Larbalestier, author of How to Ditch Your Fairy

I'll be honest, I don't want to survive the post-apocalyptic world. No sugar or coffee or chocolate, no electricity, and no A/C. Not my idea of good time.

But Mary is a survivor and fighter. She's surviving the post-apocalyptic world she grew up in and figures out how to survive the zombies that overtake her village.

So, so good and such a great way to kick off a mini-readathon. This is definitely a book I'll be thinking on for a while!

@Mommamanzi thank you again for the book (it was a great start to the season - I passed it on to a fellow #CBBC member).

As for a review, I liked it for what it was. I understand emotions, love, thoughts, future all that will still happen for young women who are growing up, but I feel like that was the least exciting part of the book (the world-building was so much more interesting)

4✨ really like how this zombie book was written. The characters for me were not likeable especially in not being devoted to family or friends. One minute they make a promise to each other and then later they are breaking that promise without a care. Keeping in mind that this was a zombie book a lot of characters died and there was a lot of great suspense.

Reading a dystopic novel during a pandemic may not be the best idea, but I really enjoyed this. The main characters live in a sort of island isolated from the rest of the world, which has been overrun by zombies. Life has reverted back to a sort of pioneer-era existence.

“On instinct I roll to my right. The shovel misses my throat and buries itself in the sand where my neck used to be. The man stands there slightly off balance, his blade buried very deep in the sand. I fall back on my heels and as he yanks against the handle I raise my hands. “Wait, wait!” I shout at him, and he stops. His grip loosens and he looks at me with an odd and #curious expression. “You‘re…” He pauses. “You‘re not dead,” he finally says.”

I'm not a fan of zombies at all but....they might just be my favorite part of this. I might have felt different if I had read the book rather than listen to the audio but 🤷‍♀️

#OctoberPutASpellOnYou Day 29: The protagonist, Mary, introduces us to a world of the “unconsecrated” (the name for #TheUndead here), the Sisterhood who holds the secrets to the world that they know of (supposedly the sole survivor in their world), the Guardians who stand guard and continually mind the fence of the village, and the ocean that lies beyond – always a symbol of salvation and uncovered truths. This book, man. Mary was probably the most aggravatingly useless and utterly manic MC I've ever read. Not to mention the annoying love triangle. Glad to be done with this one, honestly. Only reason I'm not panning it, is because the plot was (thankfully) good enough to make me want to finish it.

As a palate-cleanser, it's a pick. (Let's not look too closely into my considering a zombie apocalypse light relief!)

Zombies aren't really my thing, and angsty teen polygonal romance even less so. Mary is a messed-up monomaniac (if understandably so) and there are too many dropped threads (not least, what is with the Sisters?!).

BUT it kept me sufficiently involved to get a tonne of housework done without ill temper and that is no small matter.

LibrarianRyan This was a so so for me. I never finished the series because the next book jumps time. But I promised a staff member I would read it and I did. 6y
Reggie You had me at zombies aren‘t my things and angst teen polygonal romance even less. 6y
quietlycuriouskate @LibrarianRyan @Reggie In all honesty I chose it for the title, and because it was available at the library. I didn't realise it was the first of a series. Not sure I'll read on. I probably wouldn't have actually *read* this one (I think the problems with it would have bothered me too much), but as an audiobook it was just what was needed at the time. 6y
LibrarianRyan @River_Voice my staff member who told me I had to read it was named Carrie. And my name is Ryan. Besides her loving it, she said it was fate and I had to read it. I like Zombie novels this one was judged ugghhhhh. 6y

Maybe it isn't underrated and I just run in the wrong circles? But I feel like this trilogy should have gotten far more attention and better reviews. I've read the whole thing through twice, several years apart, and loved both experiences. Old, young, guy, gal, I feel like this is enjoyable for anyone who likes dystopian novels and zombies.

It was . . .meh for me. I love me some zombies and I‘m all about the post-apocalyptic struggle to survive, but I didn‘t care about these characters or their world. This community is deeply religious and run by nuns. It‘s kinda like the Amish ZA. I found the characters flat and uninteresting, and there were a lot of things that were not explained. I know there‘s a sequel, but I‘m not sure it‘s about these characters. Will probably not continue.

GondorGirl The other books in the series are about different people. Some of the characters make appearances, but mostly they're different stories in the dance world. 7y

I love this cover! This is exactly how I pictured Mary. This review is pretty late but here it goes... This audio was definitely so-so. I thought the premise (put zombies in M. Night Shyamalan's The Village) was awesome but I hated Mary, the protagonist. What a ridiculous and selfish person! I just couldn't get behind anything she did and if you want to know anything about me, know that I despise #unlikableprotagonists. Book ruined. Nuff said.

night_shift I felt exactly the same way. She was awful :( 7y
EchoLogical @UnidragonFrag She really was! The part when she called out her brother's wife hurt my soul. She was so petty and childish! 7y
